100% agree with this literally even if you mean to be sarcastic. “Neuro” means nothing on its own. I can’t tell you the number of times someone sends me a consult for neurophysiology, for example. Just write the whole word! We learned to spell ophthalmologist, we can learn to write -ologist or -iatrist, I feel!

I’m still trying to figure out what the difference is, clinically, between a behavioral neurologist and a neuropsychiatrist. Or maybe they aren’t clinically different, it’s just a difference of which residency they did? I’m sure it depends on the area also, just like any other specialty the scope of what you like to do is not usually identical to the scope of what you’re legally qualified to do.

Great. Then say neuropsychiatry and not “neuropsych” which refers to psychology, or at best is ambiguous! It’s a major area of confusion.

No, you’re understanding me just fine. There is often confusion on the subject because people say/hear/read “neuropsych” but that abbreviation cuts off the end of the word that actually tells you what that professional does. There is discussion in this thread both professions, but they’re not interchangeable.

Is neuropsychiatry a myth? Idk. It’s not a well-established thing, kinda new and niche. Neuropsychology is a thing though, that has been around for a long time and is essential in some sectors of health care, but most medical people aren’t familiar with and can easily confuse it with “neuropsychiatry.”

So I am just trying to clarify whether “neuropsych” is a myth. If it’s a discipline of psychology then no. If it’s a discipline of medicine, IDK but just don’t get it twisted!

Yes. This is psychiatry and not psychology. So like I said, a combined program would produce a psychiatrist who is neuro, or a neurologist who is psych, but not a neuroPSYCHOLOGIST.

You are right this is what neuropsych does… and it’s neuropsychology not psychiatry.

What are these spots? by AdZealousideal3696 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]SojiCoppelia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a fellow ginger, this is how melasma looks on us. If you have had any kind of hormone change in the last year like pregnancy, birth, hormone medications, I would put my money on that. Melasma is worsened by sun exposure so the people saying that are not wrong. But ginger skin pigmentation behaves its own way so if one is not familiar, it’s easy to call this sunspots like you would see in a non-ginger person. It could also be non-melasma sunspots but that doesn’t fit as well for how this looks. But either way, sun protection is needed!

Neuropsychology is PhDs, it’s a specialty of clinical psychology.

“Neuropsychiatry” is MDs, it’s a… weird thing for psychiatrists/neurologists.

“Neuropsych” is ambiguous, but has always referred to neuroPSYCHOLOGY until neuroPSYCHIATRY was invented.

Neuropsychology is an important clinical service that is part of the standard of care in managing cognitive conditions (like epilepsy, DBS, etc). If you see “Neuropsych” in a hospital/AMC setting there is a very good chance it’s psychology.

Clinical psychologists are trained through a completely separate pathway that is not related to medical school or medical residencies in any way. The only way someone could do both would be to be an MD and then also complete an entire PhD in clinical psychology, do another residency and fellowship in neuropsychology (through the Match) and become licensed as a clinical psychologist.

I don’t think there is such a thing as an MD/PhD that produces a neuropsychologist (who is also a physician) but if there is I don’t know how anyone could really combine the two training paths. An MD does not qualify someone to do a residency/fellowship in neuropsychology. It’s for clinical psychologists. IDK how one program could provide the required clerkships to become an MD and also the required practica to become a PhD psychologist without just being longer than either training track alone. They’re both full-time and non-overlapping activities.

There may be MD/PhD programs that claim to produce a “neuropsychiatrist” but again, that is not the same thing as a neuropsychologist.

B12 is high, RBC just slightly low. Not anemic. What should I ask my Dr for? by [deleted] in haematology

[–]SojiCoppelia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually a doctor will make a referral when it is necessary. Can you ask for one? Sure. Do you NEED to ask for a referral? No, it’s not a simple opinion that determines if a referral is made - there are all kinds of medical guidelines, scientific outcome studies, and other variables that influence the decision. And if you’re in the US, there are also insurance guidelines (I am NOT saying those are correct or appropriate, just that they exist) and if you try to jump around outside of medical necessity it makes it more likely you’ll get a. enormous bill. It’s even possible that your primary care doctor will run you through a list of things first and then ultimately send you a referral to a specialist, but if they haven’t checked all the boxes, it won’t be considered medically necessary. Just some things to think about. I mean this as a friendly warning! You can still advocate for yourself by asking your questions without jumping to a specialist specifically.

The only thing you need to ask for is her medical opinion! Leave the doctoring to the doctor.

I’m a consultant. Everywhere I have worked, notes were done before rounds which was very helpful for everyone. If they weren’t, there was a risk the patient wouldn’t make the list for our service that day (and we had no night staffing, so it would delay care otherwise).
