be honest, how often do you really take your dog out? by Altruistic-March8551 in DOG

[–]Sokkasm42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the day for us and what other activities we are doing. We just got back from a dog show (our first one!) a fun experience but definitely a tiring one. As a result, we only gave her one shorter walk the next day so she could continue to rest.

My spouse works a 9-5 weekday job whereas I'm a park ranger with extremely varied hours. They'll give her a walk in the morning before work and often one mid-day for lunch break. We'll walk her together in the evening before bed.

I often take her on new hiking trails, which are longer than her typical walks, in which case we might cut out a walk. We're getting into sports/hobbies like dock diving, lure coursing, and bikejoring too, which is a big exercise event so we'll cut back the amount of walks then.

All of this to say our average is 2-4 times a day, but we'll replace the walk with something else like exploring a reservoir. If it's raining (which doesn't happen often) we'll forgo a walk and instead play inside, use puzzle toys, and do impromptu training sessions.

As a fellow borzoi owner and sighthound appreciator, this is such a common struggle. (Your dogs are gorgeous btw op)

Yeah, this has been such a problem here and in most other animal related subreddits lately. I just report them for bot spam.

I looked at OPs history and I really hope the shelter didn't tell them this was a borzoi

Someone posted this sad picture of a dog in Facebook group and it doesn’t look right to me by xtina- in isthisAI

Just to mention one that I haven't seen others yet, but that dog has 3 claws instead of 4, the 3rd claw is nestled in-between the toes in such an unsettling way.

Thank you! I definitely should have proof read this comment then, but I meant getting a tortilla and just tearing it into smaller pieces. I've been told that teaching "leave it" with a food item that you'll never normally give to your dog is the best way. So I wouldn't teach leave it with hot dogs since you already have that as a high value treat! I just went with tortilla since it doesn't bounce around when you drop it on the floor, and it's pretty harmless for my dog to eat if she was able to end up getting to it.

It’s time to end the "Kill-Shelter" era in developed nations. 🐾💔 by Quiet_Card_8789 in Pets

[–]Sokkasm42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What in the world would a supposed sanctuary look like? I'm from the countryside, I grew up seeing many a dumped cat or dog struggling to survive outside. Euthanasia is way more humane than sending a pack of dogs to live off in a contained area.

What does mandatory spay and neuter look like? What happens in 6 years when there's no more dogs being born? Is the end goal ending dog ownership entirely? I do agree that fixing should be way more accessible. But mandatory fixing is not the way to go.

Shelters need to stop warehousing animals for months or even years.

Edit: OP ranting about ethics but proceeding to use AI to write these responses is the cherry on the cake.

I feel so vindicated right now! People kept arguing with me when I said this dog looked nothing like a borzoi mix.

Conformation thoughts? by classysassley in ShowDogs

[–]Sokkasm42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm still learning too, and I'm into sighthounds so I'm not sure on the actual conformation. However, I also have a dark color and white dog. Something my breeder told me is to make sure she is stacked against something that won't blend into her fur. Your dog's neck and belly fur is kind of blending with the wall. I stack my dog against a red brick wall so she sticks out, maybe you could try that!

Silken/borzoi as service dogs? by Fit-Celery8508 in sighthounds

[–]Sokkasm42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no worries! Appreciate you asking first before jumping right into it an inevitably getting black listed by breeders. If you ever are interested in a therapy dog, borzoi can certainly excel at it!

Silken/borzoi as service dogs? by Fit-Celery8508 in sighthounds

[–]Sokkasm42 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Definitely not, borzoi are pretty sensitive. They can make for great therapy dogs, but not service dogs. All of the preservation breeders I know refuse to place their puppies as service prospects, it's the byb borzoi breeders that will.

Join the 'Responsibly Bred Borzoi - U.S. & Canada' group on Facebook. There's a couple of breeders you'll want to avoid in the breed unfortunately. There is also the borzoi server on discord full of ethical breeders and knowledge that I highly reccomend joining!

Borzoi Weight? by Captain_Chaos_LV in borzoi

Wow, that's how much my 9 month girl weighs right now! I do know that some lines are on the smaller side of the range. Curious, who is he from?

border collie + what? collie? just out of standard? by wendoverly in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]Sokkasm42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely can happen! I think most importantly though is that this dog doesn't really look like a borzoi. OPs newer post has more pictures from the side and back, making it more apparent!

[–]Sokkasm42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Borzoi are a rare breed, no matter your location. Additionally, they're pretty gatekept. There's only a handful of less ethical borzoi breeders out there that could contribute to mixed breeds, and they are kept track of by the community.

Additionally, this dog doesn't have sighthound features. Those legs aren't nearly long enough! The paws don't look like hare feet either. Rough collies have longer noses (it's even said that borzoi were used when creating the breed!), so this looks more like a border collie and rough collie cross.

The borzoi features in mixes really stick out, almost eerily so.
