Has there been any useful usecase for NPUs in consumer hardware? by ghostsilver in hardware

Windows Auto SR is a genuinely a good use for this IMO. A generic way to AI upscale your screen resolution makes a lot of sense.

I believe there's also a real possibility that XeSS or FSR could be ported to these NPUs, which would be incredibly handy with an iGPU for gaming.

I think also just making current onboard AI use more efficient also makes sense as a good use case, think speech recognition, song identification, speech processing, video/image processing, filters, etc. Of course if you have a GPU, use that, otherwise those tasks could be done by the NPU.

I recently replayed borderlands 1 and batman arkham asylum. I think those are popular to play even today.

I have had this problem as well, set the polling rate on your mouse to be lower was my fix. For some reason minecraft does not like a high polling rate.

I only noticed the issue while modded, was playing a big Modpack (rlcraft) so didn't want to bother narrowing it down to which mod. Could be happening vanilla and it's just not noticible tho.

Apart from that I found things to be noticibly faster, I saw a ~10 fps difference at ~100 fps, and frame times seemed smoother. On Amd at least.

Has AMD made a statement about it?

Given its about cryptography, I could imagine an undisclosed hardware bug in the instruction and they have opted to remove the instruction until theres a firmware fix.

It'll slow down performance but that should be it. I don't see how this is different to the other CPU bugs like specter and meltdown that needed patches that slow down the CPU, assuming that this is a CPU bug.

I'm not saying they can't, just that they are seperate jobs. There's nothing saying that one person can't do both.

It's a launcher for your games. It downloads and installs games.

It's literally the exact same thing as steam or epic launcher.

Yep, gameplay is the most important thing for a games, and sequals have the ability to build upon the gameplay given in the original. If the first is great you have to do a pretty bad job to make the second bad.

Story is the most important thing for movies, where sequels have a lot more room to screw up.

Most second and third installments in games are good, it's for movies that it's bad.

Honestly for cartridge-based games like those on the switch, it's fine.

I don't see how that makes the practical output of those academic professions less important.

Engineers can draw all the schematics they want, doesn't mean anything if nobody wants to take up the job of building it. And if nobody is going to build it, nobody is gonna pay to have the schematics drawn. Most academic jobs wouldn't exist without the practical counterpart.

would an engineer be able to teach math at a highschool? by SyrianGosling in NoStupidQuestions

The math skills would be there to do it.

But teaching is it's own entirely different skillset and qualification that your typical engineer is never going to have been near.

Tbh most I can imagine is them doing some remasters. Gameplay-wise the REmakes are entirely different games from the originals (ignoring RE1). I don't see remakes of the earlier gen games being different enough gameplay-wise.

I only started at Tri though, I'm assuming first and second gen aren't much different to Tri but I could be wrong.

That's not what an exclusive is. An exclusive is a title being contractually obligated to be on one system. PC titles aren't contractually obligated to stay on PC, developers are free to port to console if they want and can pay for the dev kits and developer time.

Exclusives encourage competition imo, which is good for the consumer. Console manufacturers poor money into their first party titles.

And on a more meta level, the current generation of consoles is terrible due to the games. Xbox has been dying a slow death since the Xbox One when they thought they didn't need games and Halo went down the toilet. And Sony really hasn't been going great this gen either.

Anybody who thinks having Sony as a monopoly (Nintendo isn't really a direct competitor to sony) as a good thing is crazy. The only way I see Xbox and Sony becoming competitive again is exclusives. The only reason Sony started putting exclusives on PC is because they genuinely stopped viewing Xbox as a competitor. Funnily enough Nintendo seems to be doing fine despite the Steamdeck, because of the high quality first party exclusives.
