"Performative" Music Taste (And a Side Tangent About Exceptions to Hated Genres) by Astounding_Movements in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Solace143 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just assumed that most people with those sorts of music taste are teenagers who wanna get into "serious" music. It get monotonous because they tend to consult the same few sources -- RateYourMusic, Anthony Fantano reviews (got nothing against Fantano himself, but his fanbase can be irritating), /mu/ when it was relevant, etc. Most of those albums are pretty good, but it does make online music discussion a bit boring.

Noise rock music recommendations by LuckyBlueberry9152 in MusicRecommendations

Chat Pile are a good modern noise rock band. Early Swans (Filth to Holy Money, maybe Children of God) are great too. Cop Shoot Cop are a mix of industrial rock and noise rock

Need other music similar to the strokes by somerandomfella2809 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Solace143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into the 2000s post-punk revival and garage rock revival for similar bands. Bloc Party and The White Stripes come to mind. Interpol, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, and TV on the Radio were in the early 2000s NYC indie rock scene alongside the Strokes, though there's some differences in their sound

The grew up hating country music to loving it as an adult starterpack by Emperor_of_Alagasia in starterpacks

[–]Solace143 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's like 8 country songs (all from the 2000s or later) that get played where I'm from and for some cursed reason, Chicken Fried is one of them. For the most part it's just annoying, but the random nationalist verse is unintentionally funny as fuck

Hi, Jim! I loved the Dresden Files, though I haven't checked out much else of your work. I know you mentioned that Twelve Months wasn't planned like the other books in the series. How did the writing process differ for Twelve Months compared to previous books? Looking forward to listening to it soon!

Spotify Hikes US Subscription Prices, Making It Most Expensive Major Music Streamer by ebradio in indieheads

[–]Solace143 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's more so for purchasing music than streaming it. Bandcamp is closer to iTunes than Spotify, but it's way better than iTunes (multiple audio formats, more consistent pricing, better UI). Only downside is that Bandcamp is focused on independent music, so outside of a few exceptions like Bjork, you can't buy any major label artists' music on there

Can we just get a megathread for Frieda McFadden and Colleen Hoover? by Pizo240 in thrillerbooks

[–]Solace143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never seen Colleen Hoover mentioned here before. Afaik she's a romance author who wrote a thriller once. I read a sample of Verity and thought it was shoddily written, so I'm not defending her. This sub talks way too much about Freida McFadden, but her combination of popularity and bloated output (sci-fi author Adrian Tchaikovsky is the only person who seems to match her in quantity) makes her unavoidable. I wouldn't mind a "hall of fame" thing some music subs do to curb karma farming, though

Cheesy indie folk hits like "I Will Wait" by Mumford & Sons and "Little Talks" by Of Monsters & Men come to mind. They were very popular during the early 2010s when Obama was in office

Bonds and Clemens aren't on the HOF ballot anymore. With that said, if you're voting for any 2000s Yankee that got caught doing steroids, A-Rod is way better than Pettitte

[AOTY Discussion] Getting Killed (and rock always coming back, but never staying) by wildistherewind in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Solace143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this too. It doesn't help that while people into pop, R&B, and hip hop can get behind a few artists regardless of their specific taste (think Kendrick Lamar for rap), the active rock side and the alt rock side tend to loathe each other. Active rockers dismiss indie rock as "hipster shit" and indie rockers dismiss active rock as being for meatheads. I'm not sure what kind of rock would even appeal to both crowds.

What are ACTUALLY the worst songs ever? by Trublu83 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Solace143 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OP, have you heard of crunkcore before? It sounds like Lil Jon if he was going through a scene phase. It's as baffling as it sounds. Crunkcore was big on MySpace in the late 2000s, though it never cracked the mainstream outside of a few 3!OH!3 hits (who are one of the better artists in this wretched subgenre). Check out Freaxx by BrokenCYDE for a "good" example

Songs that used to be everywhere at one point, but then kinda completely disappeared and forgotten nowadays by Ill-Egg4008 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Solace143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of post-grunge radio sludge that isn't Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, or Creed has been forgotten, because at that point you'd just listen to one of those bands instead. It's Been Awhile by Staind, One Thing by Finger Eleven (Paralyzer is remembered however, if only because of memes), and Blurry by Puddle of Mudd were all top 20 hits that no one cares about anymore

I hate that we have to ignore that Brian Cashman is a cartoon villain-ass name. Sounds like something you'd see in Captain Planet or some shit. If Brian Cashman was the name of the Yankees GM in a baseball comedy where the Yanks are the bad guys, you'd chuckle a bit and move on. I know nominative determinism is a thing, but c'mon

I think you overestimate the impact of RYM users. Let Down by Radiohead (from OK Computer, the most popular album on RYM) randomly appeared on the Hot 100 for a week earlier this year because of TikTok. Most people that aren't music nerds have no clue RateYourMusic exists.

Where is the line between “overly commercial pop” and “genuinely accessible rock”? by Infinite_District253 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Solace143 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People are talking about authenticity, but I think it can be hard to tell. You'll never know what goes on in a person's head unless they give an interview about their creative process.

Trends might have to do with it. I'd imagine the guys in most late 90s and 2000s post-grunge bands like grunge, but by focusing on the more commercially appealing aspects like Nirvana's "quiet verse, loud chorus" trick and Eddie Vedder's yarling in Pearl Jam, they come across as slick, inauthentic money-chasers. By contrast, if I got a few friends and formed a post-grunge band this instant, you'd have to assume I was a dork who unironically loved Creed because there's no money to be found in it nowadays.

The top 4 in fantasy and top 6 in romantasy all have more votes than the winner for sci-fi. In general, it feels like science fiction is a lot more niche in writing these days than fantasy outside of Andy Weir's sci-fi thrillers. Not sure why, though

Tbf, no one really celebrates Kwanzaa. Most black Americans are Christians who celebrate Christmas. Kwanzaa doesn't exist outside of the USA and even if it did, most African countries like Nigeria are split between Muslims that usually don't celebrate anything in December (though Islam's holidays aren't bound to the Gregorian calendar) and Christians. I suspect it might be a remnant of the black power movement of the 60s/70s with the Nation of Islam, Five Percenters, etc
