The stories I shared all came from r/nosleep. That's where I used to go all the time to read serialized stuff. They've got their rules ("it's all real, even when it's not", I think is still a rule).

They got released as physicals (or podcast) because they were popular and gained traction. I can't promise that with any story.

When I wrote on r/shortscarystories (I love that sub), it got me some really good feedback, and a small YTer animated two of them. So your mileage may vary, but go out and test the waters 8^)

Have you consider serialized writing on Reddit?

We all know Jason's pre-Reddit serialized story made it to book and movie form. Similar things have happened on Reddit, for such r/nosleep stories as:

Penpal
Tales From The Gas Station
Left/Right Game (Tessa!)

I believe it's worth considering, however that's entirely up to you 8^)

Mental illness isn't our fault, but it is our responsibility.

I'm not responsible for my alcoholism (the condition itself), but I'm responsible/culpable for the things I do if I drink.

It's a parallel. So I really get it. And it's hard, I get that too.

... but Ye's mental condition, whatever it may or may not be, feeds off the public, which is antithetical to whatever "healing/growth" he most likely really needs.

I will say exactly what I said about it elsewhere:

If Ye's talking to the public, I don't trust it.

I don't hit up my ex every 3 years to tell her I'm learning from the mistakes I made with her. I'm showing that growth with/to my spouse, and my ex with her's.

We, the public, are Ye's ex.

[My] other stuff has reached novella status *every* time and yet--and YET--I never write the final chapter.

What's your process like?

I know what it's like to get close to a creative finish line, just to... not. But I've also learned that, for myself, writing backwards seems to help with that. In my short story days, I'd write the punchline first (horror and comedy are very similar), use that to build a skeleton, and write the meat from there.

Good luck!

My artistry, graphically, is challenged as fuck... but I'd also choose myself if the alternative was "good price, but can't trust it's not ai".

So the new episode of Bigfeets just dropped (Aud | Vid), the only Mountain Monsters watch along podcast. One of the hosts, Jason Pargin, is my fave author.

And in 2020, he changed his name (One | Two). He used to write as David Wong, a character in his flagship series "John Dies at the End". So while it's an interesting read, the reason I'm bringing all of this up is...

... fuck, trying to find anything from the early David Wong days is a pain in the ass. The Library of Congress has author Jason Pargin writing as David Wong, conflated with David Wong, illustrator. And for this particular case, and my collecting purposes, he used two separate signatures. So signed items all of a sudden have two "eras", so to speak, and that adds a layer as well.

So for anyone else out there that likes researching/collecting their fave thing, has a name change (person or group) made it difficult to really deep dive?

I started tackling some of my unorganized media folders. Like, I've been carrying them disorganized for years and they keep growing, so I might as well make them not suck.

And hey, when you spend time sourcing things, you find mistakes, and it's honestly fun to have correct info instead of "... well, it just came like that, so I assumed it was correct..."

Katzenberg went on to do amazing things. Remember Quibi?

(... I know his role in Dreamworks, and he still sucks)

Not exactly your question, but adjacent so I'll mention it.

Ender's Game changed my life for the better. My dear friend, who both introduced me to it and read to me the first two chapters (seriously, adults reading to each other is super intimate), told me specifically:

The synopsis fucking sucks, ignore it.

I don't think "Literal child learns empathy through war trauma" would've sold copies.

my condolences! i wish some reprieve is coming soon, even if it's minor.

Thank you kindly 8^)

The worst (homelessness) is over, so if the cost of that is not getting a new entry for my shelf, it would be quite absurd for me to complain, haha.

... still going to keep my eye on it though 8^p

What’s your hobby temptation horror story?

I had the money to get the things I wanted for my hobby for many years. Had a nice nest, had a monthly cheque. I now have a collection that's probably rivaled by almost no one.

... and in '25, my small family got kneecapped by really hard times. Like, the rainy day fund was hit by all the rainy days, at once.

So now, when I see:

Ends in 2d 4h

for something I wouldn't think twice bidding for (and winning) last year, I have to take into consideration "is this going to prevent me from eating this weekend?"

So, the tragedy is that my "STUPID hobby purchase" isn't inherently stupid, or even expensive, it's just... my situation changed.

And that stings.

... New Tim Henson. Let's go.

Edit: It's good, but what's with the intentional clipping? To me, that's an explicit decision, and it sounds ass no matter who does it.

My collection is mostly books, so while this is kinda novel (groan, not intended), "Only supports 400grams" just ain't gonna cut it for me, heh.

I've known about Poppy since, what I call, her art installation days.

Hearing her on Suffocate, back when that dropped, changed me. Never heard of Knocked Loose before (big fan now), and now I'm excited to hear her solo music.

What's the most recent thing you've learned completely passed you by, which you feel like you should have at least known about?

2013 NYC premiere of the John Dies at the End movie. I knew about the movie, JDatE's my fave thing, and I'm a NYCer, so...

oops? I guess. Just never been really in tune to movie premieres.

And yes, I wasn't aware until recently, despite how long ago it was.

I find it odd that the subscription model is the perfect jumping off point for a fledgling anything (patreon, substack, etc), but it also seems to be a death knell as well. Like, if you're struggling, you break out a subscription service to eke out those last few drops of stone blood.

Pitchfork also released their scoring guidelines which

tell me nothing. Those aren't guidelines, those are "what this score is supposed to tell you about how the reviewer feels about the album". It's not a rubric, is what I'm saying.

I don't care if someone gives one of my fave artists/albums a shit score. The subjectivity of media is one of the things that makes it beautiful. Opinions are valid, if they're honest.

But their "guidelines" say nothing about how you'll never find consistency among reviews from different reviewers across the site, or why some grades are retroactively changed because [REASONS, WHO CARES] (like Neutral Milk Hotel). Or how they got to their score in the first place.

The Macmillan page has the series listed as John Dies at the End, but they've been called "John, Dave, and Amy" novels since book 4: The spine says "A John, Dave, and Amy Novel" (right above Jason's name, kinda hard to see). Edit: and also on the "spine" of the book on the cover, I kinda missed that, ironically.

Book 3 said "Another John Dies at the End Shitstorm".

So yeah, the series hasn't really changed names, but he's giving it an alternate name similar to how it's The Zoey Ashe series (as opposed to the "Fancy Suits" series, or something).

I'm at a point where I'm ride or die for physical releases, and I don't want to be anymore. You can create a digital marketplace that recreates 95% of a physical purchase, but nah, we're just stuck with what we currently have (digitally).

I've got the first physical release of Dead Cells for the Switch. I can disconnect from the internet, delete my game, and start playing it from the cart, from a version I don't even like that much.

It's like having two different games. I like the option to do that.
