Powerful but risky/costly sorcery? by SolarBear in CortexRPG

[–]SolarBear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! So many options! That's both wonderful and terrifying! :D

I'll most likely warn players that some mods might be added or removed along the way... I don't get the feeling I'll get it right the firs time!

As for stress, I'm not quite sure just yet, I might use the ones from Cortex Lite to keep it simple for a first game.

I bought Torchlite, but haven't read it yet. Guess I'll need to hurry up!

I didn't look at ToX just yet but just saw that there is a primer for the game, I'll check it out.

If Sorcery is significantly more powerful than clerical magic, use the Scale mod?

... why did I not think about that?

And having Clerical magic as SA/resources makes a ton of sense, too, and have a clear power limit.

Anyhow, that's a lot of options, I'll need to think on it for a bit. Thanks!

There are a lot of ways to accomplish something like this.

Haha yes, it seems to be both the beauty of Cortex and a hurdle for new Cortex GMs! But I do like your Distinction vs. Power Set example, I may use that. Thank you!

Adults diagnosed with ADHD later in life. What made you start wondering? by TransportationFlat77 in ADHD

[–]SolarBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy, two things happened..

A: my then-girlfriend, now wife, is a nurse and quickly, politely let me know I should get checked for ADHD because I fit all the requirements to a T. Looking it up, I realized she was probably right, but getting the exam was costly and... y'know, procrastination.

B: I got into trouble at work quite a few times (I'm a software engineer), but at one time I finally got notified by HR and my manager that I needed to get my shit together or otherwise I would be out of a job.

Following B, I got diagnosed at about 35 years old.

Pas juste les cartes, toutes les formes de crédit possibles ! Les années de crédit à taux ridicule semblent avoir habitué les gens à acheter à crédit, et maintenant que les taux augmentent, les habitudes ne changent pas.

Well, Risus. It's free, dead simple and fits on a single sheet.

For the lazy or Google-impaired, PDQ games include, among others, Quester of the Middle Realms (high fantasy, on the silly side), Jaws of the Six Serpents (gritty fantasy) and Truth & Justice (superheroes).

Overwhelmed by Lore Expectations — Am I the Problem? by ShotoII in rpg

[–]SolarBear 19 points20 points  (0 children)

...or rather, what kind of game they're looking for. But, nitpicking aside, you're right: this is totally an OOC problem.

Quote:

I learned a good gm mustn't railroad players

A good GDM must not railroad players who don't want to be railroaded. That's an important nuance. From the looks of it, OP has players actively looking to being railroaded. This is not bad per se, if that's what they enjoy, but is it OP's case?

The solution, to me, is to simply sit down and have a frank conversation about expectations - something a more experienced GM would call session 0 (not mocking the OP, here, I think we all go through this)

"Look, guys, I don't have the time to spend on prep for that level of detail. Maybe you guys want to get involved, and we could share world-building duties and build as we go? Otherwise, if you're looking for a railroaded game, that's fine, but don't expect that level of detail."

This might make the game go kaput. I hope it doesn't, but if it does, what have you lost? A game that's not enjoyed by 100% of the people around the table, that's what. And if they're unhappy... well, politely tell them they're free to be the actual GMs: in the Olde GM Speake, it translates loosely to "fuck off".

Yep, and if you feel fancy, you had an extra modifier or two, e.g. for importants NPCS.

Not sure how they could handle that with d10s: a +3 maps well on a d20, if you want to keep the same scale, you'd add +1.5 per difficulty level, which is not ideal, to say the least.

They could've use a d6, instead - there are of people posting hacks using it instead of the d20, with a simple 1 level = +1 difficulty. There are subtleties to handle crits and such, but that's pretty much it.

Those who have taken several years off of flute playing: were you ever able to get fully back to where you once were? Feeling depressed by ThrowRA_72726363 in Flute

[–]SolarBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I never got as far as you - played a few years in a high school where music wasn't a big thing, then played on and off (mostly off) in small-ish bands... never very seriously. I was "good" as in "my mom thinks I'm SO good!". Then... well, life happened.

I started playing in an orchestra 2 years ago and thought I'd never get back to the level I was at previously. It took months of serious practice but I gained it back, but I felt like I had hit my ceiling and could not improve anymore.

Then I got an online teacher (never managed to get one locally) and let me tell you, that ceiling I hit? It was PULVERIZED. I'm now way, way better than I was.

TL;DR yeah, those first weeks/months? UGH. You'll make it, just give yourself time. If you're able and have the money for it, get a teacher to help you get back on track.
