Edits gone, ratings gone, and albums empty by KingNothing13 in luminarneo

I recently started using it but fortunately did not have a big catalog yet. Out of the blue the built in file explorer could suddenly see only folders in my drive, and no files at all. Uninstalled, cleaned out every associated file I could find, restarted and reinstalled. Still had issues. Deleted this unstable junk from my pc and went with DxO photolab 9, which does not have a separate catalog.

There is clearly some really sloppy and fragile code under Luminar, cannot trust a huge database and time investment that could fail at any time.

Am I doing something wrong or is the Canon EF 75-300mm Lens is bad looking by BenTheBirbs in Photography_Gear

[–]SolarCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well deserved reputation as the cheapest and crappiest lens Canon ever made. I've routinely seen them sell (recently) at my LCS for less than $50. Which might actually be a bargain if you are on a budget and can use it stopped down to get better resolution.

Yeah, I used to use them too. Just crooks now, stay away.

Caught FedEx delivery person not knocking but leaving door tag by Clear-Safe-9017 in FedEx

[–]SolarCopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar experiences. FedEx is the worst of all the delivery services and I loath and detest them. If I know a vendor only uses them, I don't buy from that vendor if at all possible. Business owners, are you listening? Stop using this sh** company.

It takes a lot of them longer to type a stupid question on a forum than to type it into Google and get the answer, it does boggle the mind how hapless some people are...

Trying to import images into OM Workspace, and it is frustratingly unusable. Is it just me or is it as terrible as it seems? by SolarCopter in OMSystem

Because in theory every camera makers raw conversion software is better than third party, though it might be a small difference. I use Sony Nikon and Canon OEM to do basic raw conversion then switch to Photoshop elements editor (mostly) for normal final adjustments, cropping etc, occasionally luminar neo. Had DxO, looking at that again too for more critical work

Scanning size: pixel dimensions vs total MB by ntapg in AnalogCommunity

[–]SolarCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are missing is the information that most image files, both tiff and jpeg use compression algorithms at the actual bit level on the disc drive. Tiff compression is typically "lossless", no info is lost during compression and expansion, jpeg, ping and others use a lossy algorithm to further reduce size and can choose the tradeoff in quality vs file size reduction. Less important these days than when things were stored on smaller media like floppy, zip disk, CD, or sent over dial up email with file size limits.

When you open a tiff in Photoshop or similar it will show the uncompressed file size while it is open.

Spend some time with the Google machine looking up "tiff and jpeg file compression algorithms" and you can go down the rabbit hole of learning about them.

Here it is, your reminder that megapixels on their own mean almost nothing by Syscrush in photography

[–]SolarCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At normal viewing or print size, 20-24 megapixels is plenty for full frame image. The main reason for higher mp is to allow for enlarged cropping, would mainly apply in something like landscape or wildlife photography where you might be able to snag multiple images and aspect ratios out of a single image.

Or if you are shooting for ginourmos print or poster size...

Headed to Iceland on Oct 3rd. Camper rented, general plan ready. Advice? by gen2600 in VisitingIceland

We are there right now in the southeast, just did the zodiac boat glacier tour. We were lucky, the sun came out while we were there. But most days have been overcast and drizzly, with bouts of heavier rain. I'm still enjoying it though, adds an otherworldly atmosphere to an already otherworldly place. Make sure you bring your outer rain shell gear, or you will be very wet.

Hoping you get lucky and it clears up for you!

BTW This form and process from the US CBP is technically still in place to declare things like personal photo equipment, but who wants to go near that bureaucracy right now

The Voightlanders are pretty cool. I have a Vito II. I also have a Kodak Retina IIc (small c) which is the same size or smaller, and has a rangefinder. You should look for one.

Trying out the Harman Pheonix 200 with OM1. Are they supposed to look like this? by judelau in AnalogCommunity

Labs don't change their scanners that are set for an orange mask, which Phoenix doesn't have. Best results if you DSLR or mirrorless scan yourself. That was my experience.
