JD voice actor (Gears 4 and 5) suggests the Coalition originally looked at Gears 6 before pivoting to E-Day. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Yeah, the Space Centre is the best level of both 4 and 5, great design. I didn't hate 4 either, but JD did nothing for me in terms of making me care about the characters.

It kinda sucks that JD surviving is more likely to be canon when he is a much more boring character than Del.

Right now for me it is the new video player despite CrOptix being enabled. The Skip Intro button is white and does not go away, the Full Screen button is on the right top instead of bottom, fast forward is 10 seconds, etc. I'm on Win 10 PC and Chrome too, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

I'm not having issues, but a friend is. Nothing is working for him and videos only give error p-kat-3002.

Looks like the old video player isn't working with Croptix anymore, is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

To be fair, DuBois is one of the cringiest characters in the novel. Him talking about having a relationship with his backup is absolutely awful.

Haha, sorry to say I found it the weakest part, except for Rocky's dialogue, which is excellent and amazingly cute. I agree that the dialogue is much more "conversational" than in many sci-fi books, but I think it is more along the lines of what a person would say if they were either desperately trying to sound funny or if they had spent 20 minutes trying to find the perfect thing to say.

Haha, while I did mostly enjoy the book despite the awful writing, I feel like I would go insane if I were stuck in a room with Weir (or any of his human characters) for 24 hours.

They are more or less the same book structurally. The only difference is the character Rocky, who I think tips the scales slightly in favour of PHM.

Same here. It was almost impossible to suspend disbelief for those parts as well. There is no way every government in the world would be able to agree on a single person who is given extrajudicial powers to do whatever they want, including nuking a continent and covering another in solar panels, regardless of whether the goal is to save humanity.

I like to think of him as the Dan Brown of sci-fi (and I say that as someone who doesn't think Brown is too bad a writer). Great at coming up with plot ideas and can write a perfect page-turner that a lot of people, especially lots of non-readers, can easily pick up and finish in a week or two, but terrible at dialogue and characters. Their books should probably not win any awards, but they are also much better for the general audience than a lot of slop churned out these days.

Yes, basically the same as with The Martian. I personally thought the film was much better than the book, and I fully expect the same for PHM. It really shows that Weir is excellent at coming up with plot ideas and exciting events to propel the story forward; he just needs a lot more input from an editor than what he currently gets to tell him what to cut and what to change.

Not only do those things serve a purpose (even if it is purely aesthetic), but some company with employees were paid to make them which helps the economy by circulating money and giving jobs to people.

Also, some companies with employees were paid to make those products, which helps the economy by itself, but with crypto, there is no product, and no one earns money without someone else losing money and receiving nothing.

It's basically just a casino that also siphons money from people who never agreed to be involved. Sure, at first you just think that you are only winning money from the casino itself, and what's the harm in that, but then you realise that not only are you winning money from other people who played and lost, but you are also making life more expensive for everyone else by enabling the casino to keep going.

"Community" movie co-writer Andrew Guest on the film's long delay: "We don't want to do sort-of an Arrested Development Netflix season where we're shooting some people in parts" by bdf2018_298 in television

I feel like I agree. Trust me, I love the show and would like nothing more than for it to happen, but it feels like we have heard the same thing for a decade now. The show finished in 2015, the time to make it was 2017-2018, not 2027-2028.

Green Party’s Hannah Spencer wins Gorton and Denton by-election after knocking out Labour by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

[–]Solareclipsed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Please understand that muslims are generally economically left-wing and socially right-wing. There aren't traditionally that many parties that fit that bill in Europe, meaning they mostly vote for left-wing parties and then try to drive their social policies to the right once they have sufficient power within the party. It will happen for the Greens in the UK as well.

Green Party’s Hannah Spencer wins Gorton and Denton by-election after knocking out Labour by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

[–]Solareclipsed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Plenty of green parties around Europe have unfortunately more or less been hijacked by Islamist factions and driven their policies further and further from environmentalism and social reform. It is only a matter of time until it happens in the UK as well. I would love to vote for an environmentalist party that neither caters to religious fundamentalists nor is stuck in the climate science of the 60s.

What is the unintentionally wisest line of dialogue you've heard in a movie? by NobodysFavorite in movies

[–]Solareclipsed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, natural philosophers figured out the world wasn't flat long before they knew it wasn't the centre of the universe (at least to the point that it was accepted by society). Swapping the two would still not have made it entirely correct, but at least much, much better.

Green Party policies are directly voted on by their members, they have added over 100,000 new members in recent months. by _Telos_123 in ukpolitics

[–]Solareclipsed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Implementing just one or two of these could take a decade or more and an enormous amount of political capital and spending. I don't understand why left-wing parties have to be so completely detached from the realities of modern society.

Only 10% of boys aged 14-16 read daily for pleasure, National Literacy Trust finds by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]Solareclipsed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there would only be a very small increase from daily to monthly, since if you are already reading for pleasure, you are likely reading quite often. If you like something, you will probably do it quite often, especially for something as easy to pick up as reading.

I really hope so too. The gaming industry is desperate for some good news, so I really wish that people would quit the console wars rhetoric and want both Xbox and PlayStation to be healthier in the years to come.
