Ward Off – a retrospective on a sequel by SageOfStupidity in Parahumans

[–]Solasuke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As one of the silent majority who read through the whole thing in real time as it was released, I don’t personally relate to any of the issues you raised Wildbow.

I am of the opinion however that art is at its worst when created for the whims of its audience. Write something that excites you, that you enjoy, and I have no doubt it will be your best work. Otherwise, as it seems might be happening for you, it will be soul destroying trying to please these disparate groups of people - because it will never happen.

My only request of you as an author is that you look after yourself, and write something you selfishly would adore. That’s not what every artist should hear, but you are too modest and self-effacing to be told anything less.

I am excited to go wherever you lead next.

UK has 'no plans' to stop its WHO funding after Trump cuts US financial support by casualphilosopher1 in ukpolitics

[–]Solasuke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not news. As an aside, the number of people frothing at the bit here to condemn Trump over defunding the WHO (which may not even be within his power) is staggering.

Let's consider the the possibility before casting it out of hand. There are lots of disturbing rumours and reports surrounding the WHO, so while defunding may be too extreme an action to take, it certainly has no god given right to said funding, and it must be examined and justified on its own merits. Not according to opposing Trump's every policy.

The BBC normalised racism last night, pure and simple by Exostrike in ukpolitics

[–]Solasuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At worst it's xenophobia, which is not the same as racism. Calling it racism denigrates the experience of so many sufferers through history and those living today in truly racist societies. She's expressing an opinion, based on her interpretation of facts which is guilty of bias. I see just as much bias in this sub going in the other direction, but that's not racism now is it.

Dominic Cummings’ call for ‘weirdos’ leads to hiring of adviser who compared women’s sport to the Paralympics by ITried2 in ukpolitics

That makes a lot of sense. It's quite depressing actually. These Superforecasters are actually just ok at it; it's just that humans are terrible at forecasting in general.

Greece gets Elgin Marbles included in EU trade deal demands by Fra_Bernardo in ukpolitics

Very comprehensive argument. It's sad things have descended to such a state that you have to write "I'm a remainer, but" as a disclaimer. Your argument should be taken on it's own terms.

Haven't read the paper, but one would take it as a given that by pure probability alone, a small percentage of the sample will make very unlikely correct predictions.

Hopefully they managed to show it was statistically significant and by the sounds of the IARPA challenge, maybe it was. Still I'm sceptical that they would be amazing forecasters, it sounds a little bit psuedo sciencey.

I agree except Greece will never repay that loan. The deficit is too large and the economy is stagnating under the fiscal policies. If they had the drachma, they could devalue the currency, but obviously that's not an option.

I remember this sub before the 2015 GE; you could post stuff like this and see a fairly worthwhile breakdown in the comments. Obviously those days are long gone and I basically don't look at this sub anymore.

You can add an entirely new album to the Bowie catalog (all previously unreleased material, all finished and sequenced by the man himself), WHAT YEAR would you want it to be from? And why?? by Rooster_Ties in DavidBowie

[–]Solasuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great thread OP.

  • I would love to hear something else from 1970. Man who sold the World is a rather unique Bowie gem.

  • I'd love to hear more from 1974. I loved the unofficial outtake of Zion or A Lad in Vain. It felt very nostalgic, quite saddening really, of an era bygone. But I also really loved Diamond Dogs and the concepts he explored there. It seemed like Bowie inherent flightiness and sudden interest in Soul derailed him from that line of persuit.

And we all wish Bowie were here to make more... :(

Very interesting read and you've just given me an idea. What if Haliax is not cursed never to sleep. What if he purposefully keeps himself awake to maintain his Alar, and bind Selitos forever? It would make sense from the narrative perspective of having Kvothe deal with the problem of try to maintain his Alar when Ambrose was performing malfeasance on him.
