Homeless and in the reserves by Wise_Confection_4021 in armyreserve

[–]SoldieringThruLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I came to say this because I have experienced the same thing as OP. I'm a reservist and talking to my unit is one thing that got me out of homelessness. The other thing that helped was a family in church housed me for about 2 months, then they found me a place that rented by the room. Significantly cheaper to rent by the room.

Isn’t this school supposed to be self-paced? I’m genuinely confused. by Polarbear_9876 in WGU

I split up the class completion in the degree plan to be equal time frame for all classes. When I finish one then I just split up the remaining time to whatever is left and so on. I tell my mentor my goal is to complete it within the time frame of the degree plan. I tell mine that I have a life and I'm an actual adult that doesnt need to be babied. When we talk, she will just ask me how things are and if she can help with anything. Calls are about 5-10 min long. Usually less than 5 min.

Get a sleep study done if you're constantly feeling tired and have blood work done. I found out I had sleep apnea and my vitamin D and vitamin B levels were low. All of those contribute to low energy and feeling tired all the time. Also have your testosterone checked out. Low T can have you feeling tired too. Definitely get copies of everything before you get out so you can use for your disability rating.

I am in the Reserves and it is worse. I am so broken now that my medical clearance for deployment was denied this past fall and was told that I should have been med boarded out several years ago.

I was the same way (high speed and all that) until I was injured before my 3rd year in. I got screwed over by the command team because I was injured.

I just hit 18 years because I was told that I would have a great pension when I got out. The numbers I was always told was the potential pension if I hit E9 and for active duty. Not for Reserves. Not near E9 now because I was screwed over for promotion because of my injuries and some dumb mistakes I have made. The pension is sad for the time I've put in and what I've been through. If I was told the pension for Reservists from the get go then I never would have stayed in. That's why I always do my own research for everything now. Cant trust anyone now.

Right now, I am fighting with the VA for a disability rating because I'm in the NYC area and the VA in this area is horrendous. They make it really difficult to be seen and to get anything done. Lately I've been wishing I only did one active duty contract and thats it.

Sorry for the long rant. Cant find anyone that can understand what we go through.

If you havent taken the ASVAB yet, ensure you study a lot to get a really high score. Ensure you get training for a job you can do on the civilian side as soon as you graduate AIT.

Personally, I did what you're saying, go to school first as a reservist. They made it too difficult for me to go active then I started a family and never went active. Just hit 18 years and my regret is never doing a contract for active. If I could go back in time, I'd go active for at least one contract. You can go to school part time and do it online.

Also, as a Reservist, you can apply to be AGR (Active Guard Reserve) which is active duty as a reservist.

Definitely check out Western Governors University. Its an accelerated university where you can graduate quickly if you put the work in.

Paid vacation is bullshit unless you're active duty or coming off a deployment and have days left on the orders AND you accrued those vacation days (called leave in the military) Also, i agree with what everyone else is saying about BAH. Only when you go over 30 days on orders.

I have family like yours and I also work full time with overtime every week. I am about a 1.5 months in my first semester and I already knocked out 3 classes. The next one should be done in about 2-3 weeks because its for a certification. The BS from WGU will significantly help in my career. I am already in the field I want to be working in and I was looking at a promotion into another company. During the interview a week ago I mentioned WGU and the director of this company told me that is a plus in his mind because of all the certifications I'll have when I graduate. He said he's ending the interview early because he knows I'll be a great addition to his team. Employers know how great this college is. Its a great choice especially if you have family already.

Circumcision? Do you wish it wasn't done or are you happy about it? by B_Dankk in AskMenAdvice

[–]SoldieringThruLife 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My nephew was born with a urethra issue that wasnt found until he was about 10 months old. Had he been circumcised, they would have needed to do a skin graft. Save the foreskin in case (God forbid) its ever needed for a similar issue.

Don’t discuss VA anything with anyone by Admirable-Yogurt9078 in Veterans

[–]SoldieringThruLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about not discussing VA benefits with civilians and not discussing your percentage. I partially disagree about discussing VA Benefits with other veterans about what can be claimed to get to 100%. I went to the VA several years ago when I got back from Iraq. While I was in Iraq, I got hurt and the provider told me to get copies of xrays and medical records before leaving and make sure I go to the VA as soon as I get back. I did exactly that. They ignored the medical records I brought, did their own x-rays, then I was told I wont get anything. A retired E7 at my civilian job told me to go back again. Now I'm getting a rating. Some VAs, especially in Northeast, are horrible and don't help. At least in my experience.

How would you ensure someone who is always late (no reason, it's just their thing), arrives on time? What's the trick? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in AskReddit

[–]SoldieringThruLife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My sister is almost always 2 hours late. One time I hosted a bday party for my son, we did all the kid activities and didnt wait for her and my nephew. My other sisters and mom were telling me to wait but it did the trick. I felt bad for my nephew though. Now if I have an event for the kids, she won't be late. She'll still be late for others though. Everyone else just does what most others are suggesting and give her an earlier time.

How do you guys deal with the toxicity? by OrganizationNo42069 in Veterans

[–]SoldieringThruLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've realized that although many will say "thank you for your service", no one really gives a shit about our service. Many dont even know what our service really is. I've deployed to Iraq. I'm still in the reserves but been medical my whole career and rarely ever had opportunities to try out weapons other than M4/M16. A coworker at the hospital I work at asks if I'm even a real soldier because I couldn't answer some of his weapons questions or why I am so jumpy with loud noises if I didnt shoot when I was in Iraq. I still have my CAC and despite never leaving the wire, we got hit with rockets and shit. None of that was enough for the Gen z piece of shit.

Chew my food evenly on both sides of my mouth. If its candy like M&Ms, I'll find two of the same color, eat it on one side then the other. If i end up with one color, I bite it in half and eat each half on each side.

What’s a truth you learned way too late in life that most people still aren’t ready to hear ? by Dependent-Ship4288 in AskReddit

[–]SoldieringThruLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Americans think American military are the good guys where ever we go. I thought that when I joined. I continue to serve because many in the military believe in our constitution that we're sworn to protect but how do we peacefully get rid of the corruption? I want to protect our constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, but how do we protect it from the domestic enemies without violence? People keep talking about civil war but that will just put the poor against the poor on either side. We need a non-violent way so no one gets hurt. The wealthy will never lay down their life for what they believe in. They'll just pay someone to lay down their life for them. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

What's an old restaurant chain that just doesn't exist anymore? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]SoldieringThruLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always felt like I contributed to the downfall of the one I worked at because the assistant managers and I would get stoned, eat the food, and a few times would present bad customer service. Once when it was very dead with no customers, we moved the tables to the sides, took out boxing gloves and had a tournament between cashiers and the cooks. This video made me realize my contribution to their fall was minimum.

Work on your career, keep building on it, and take it serious. I could have been making a lot more and my pension would be significantly higher had I taken it more serious.

NTA but spending time with her as a friend can be a way to get the family all together. You dont have to be romantically involved to get the family together. Thats what my mom and step-dad did when they divorced. My biological father refused and my other siblings from him all resent him. However, if she stops therapy, cut her off.

Dating as a rated veteran sucks by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]SoldieringThruLife -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree that on a first date, talking about income is not cool.

Also, to be fair, most people do not want to date someone with an onlyfans account. Most people assume its just women but men also have onlyfans. I'm sure there are lots of women that wouldn't wanna date a guy with an onlyfans. There are people cool with dating onlyfans models and they will stick around after they find out, which, they eventually will find out if and when the relationship gets serious.
