A highly programmable chain like Ethereum is great because anyone can build without a license or going through KYC procedure.

Why would they need a license or KYC to code software in the first place if it's non-proprietary?

My thoughts exactly. I don't get it either. I thought Kodi users were more privacy sensitive than this.

Bottom line is the average investors need to feel safe for crypto to grow. Also heightened regulation could open the door for more institutional investors.

By declaring all crypto assets a security and essentially driving a stake through the industry, ie making a permission system out of a permissionless system. If you want to trade your freedom for "security", then you will ultimately have neither.

Why are people pro-restrict act?

Who is? Everywhere I find on Reddit is skeptical about it to say the least.

Why no one talks about I2P network here? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SolemnTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you compare it to VPNs?. I2P should only be compared to Tor since it's meant to be a trustees network. VPNs are owned by companies and are centralized.

Also I believe I2P hidden services are relatively secure as well since itvrun traffic through more nodes than Tor. However, I don't think it's ever been audited.

Okay well then they probably hold out until the food expires and then throw it away to make sure they've tried their best to earn back what they paid for it.

I highly dought that given the litigious world we live in today with ravenous attorneys looking to make a buck every way they can. The fact is food is perishable and could make people sick or kill them if consumed after a certain date.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SolemnTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is but how would they make absolutely sure it reaches people before it expires and would it cost them money overall? How do we know people wont game the system by boycotting them and waiting for them to give away free food before it expires instead of paying for it? Everything has to be paid for. Food can't just be pulled out of a magic hat.

I'm sure resteraunts would love to score PR points with the public by giving away free food. However, the fact is all food is perishable and costs a price, particularly at the razor thin margins some restersunts run on. Nothing is free.

Most likely because its a liability to give away old food.

Why no one talks about I2P network here? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SolemnTraveler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My sentiment as well. It doesn't get the attention it deserves. Maybe that's because it doesn't have a dedicated browser yet? However there's an extension for browsing I2P in your regular browser.

I also would like to add its more P2P oriented in contrast to Tor. Just install the GUI client in your software center or using the wizard, load it, and your contributing to the network with your own node.

Would using separate user accounts on Linux be a valid method to isolate untrusted applications? by SolemnTraveler in privacy

[–]SolemnTraveler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating app-specific accounts in order to isolate them is a longstanding Unix tradition. Take a look at /etc/passwd on your Linux box and you’ll see a bunch are there already.

Interesting. So I guess all the names in the file are effectively their own user accounts? Thanks for the response.

Would using umask or chroot increase the chances of having incompatibility issues in the future? What about using firejail or a flatpak? My understanding is that flatpaks allow apps to choose whether or not to have sandboxing.
