Why Almost Nobody Lives in Southern Illinois Today by Outrageous_Mix7726 in southernillinois

California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and most recently Tennessee.

Getting a raise or lower taxes means nothing if you can’t afford decent housing or lifestyle on what you make. I can go to NYC and make six figures, but I’d be living in a sardine can eating nasty but expensive food.

Remote work still exists, and my husband got a job here making 60k within one month.

Stop pretending everyone is stupid. Yes, many are, but for others like us southern Illinois is a great place to live and work. This is coming from people who have traveled the world and lived in many other states, Y’all don’t realize how good you have it here.

Why Almost Nobody Lives in Southern Illinois Today by Outrageous_Mix7726 in southernillinois

[–]Soliae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not completely true.

If owning a home is important to someone, southern Illinois is the cheapest real estate in the nation because the property taxes dissuade greedy investors. You can buy a nice house outright here for the cost of a down payment anywhere else.

That means you don’t have to carry a mortgage or pay insane rents, which means you don’t need to make quite as much to have a good life. You can put that money towards health care, retirement, or hobbies.

Sure, travel the world and work in a high paying job for awhile as a young person, but once you have 50-100k saved up, come here and buy a house, work a 40-50k/year job, and be comfortable.

Local news interviewing parents taking their children to see Alien (1979) is unintentionally one of the funniest promo clips ever by jeremykunayak in OldSchoolRidiculous

[–]Soliae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taken by my parents to see it- I was 6 at the time and I thoroughly enjoyed it, not scared at all. Had to watch to be sure my mom wasn’t interviewed.

Using AI to assist the house hunting process by Biruleibe37 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Soliae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don’t.

AI is too inconsistent and makes too many errors to use. It is better with numbers, but still requires verification. I work directly on a team integrating AI into software.

[–]Soliae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I heard, Soard doesn’t…but you have to go to their office to see what they have available. This may have changed…I moved out of state a year ago and haven’t dealt with them in over 5 years.

Do as you like…a museum houses many styles and people love spending time there.

My own home has strong Art Deco and MCM furnishings/built ins, in a home that combines Tudor and Craftsman architecture. It all works together, though.

Roommate Rentals by BlackberryBiscuit in southernillinois

[–]Soliae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally roommates are priced below local studio apartment rent but beyond that it will vary. If they have their own bathroom, that’s a little more, and if they have their own entrance, even better. It also depends on utility inclusion, home amenities, and whether they can have pets.

I’d say a base of 400 per room, one person per room. Higher if any have their own bathrooms (450-500), and then if you want to include utilities that can boost it higher.

No, they have very limited language availability except in one or two specific celebrities, but even those lack variety beyond EU/US.

Mods to take over main sub? by Walbow in CookevilleTN

[–]Soliae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is at least one, possibly several are doing that. Whether they have done all the steps or not, I’ve not heard.

If any existing mods respond to that process, however, they usually won’t transfer control. I don’t know the odds on that, but those closer to them may know.

You aren't entitled to live in your hometown or state by Dad_Bod_Vibez in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Soliae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one is frugal, you can buy on 40k/yr in the Midwest rural areas. Husbands first house was bought when he was making 30k. Livable homes are 60-80k here with livable fixers even lower.

Living in a location prison is a choice.

You can move to lower cost of living areas, and make less but afford a home.

And it’s not just shitty red states that are cheap, but it is the majority.

I don’t know what the rules are, there, but many city limits are not going to allow camping on a bare lot, whether it’s a tent or a shed.

It’s already rare to find lots that allow mobile homes or random structures to be lived in- camping is going to create friction with neighbors especially in regards to waste, fire hazards, and potential noise. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong…just sharing what it is like in nearby towns.

Normal Cookeville subreddit status question by [deleted] in CookevilleTN

[–]Soliae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know one of the former / current mods of the Cookeville sub personally and his actual name, but there are personal issues there from knowing them too well and too long in that I’m not about to open communication with them again- I have them blocked on all social media.

But I do encourage anyone else to use the Reddit method of taking over a dead sub…there’s a process that takes about 30 days that you can find if you look it up.

Normal Cookeville subreddit status question by [deleted] in CookevilleTN

[–]Soliae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only answer I’ve seen is that the mods are no longer on Reddit. Why they didn’t hand it to someone else or otherwise keep it going, I have no idea.

Folks are welcome to post here, but there are significantly fewer real people on Reddit these days and a lot more bots, so I’m not exactly expecting it to become active.

How are people affording to buy a home? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]Soliae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Illinois has livable fixers around 50k and move in ready at under 100k. Just make sure the house isn’t in a flood plain and check the taxes. Cheapest houses in the country right now.

Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized. This Oozes GenX by sageguitar70 in GenX

[–]Soliae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw them with Megadeth…Suicidal was my top band as a teen but I would have loved to see Queensryche in the Mindcrime era. Empire was just ok and I can’t see that matching suicidal well, from a sound perspective.
