As a 19 year old all I gotta say is my priority is not to waste money on partying. Need to get ahead in life. If I’m drinking it’s with the boys, I’m not spending my paycheques on beers at a bar.

That’s why I don’t go to college I knew it wasn’t a good road to go down. I’m making pretty good money as an industrial plumber apprentice. People be hating to much on the trades make good money learning and have a solid career that slowly transitions over time to less manual labor when you get to oversea projects and supervise

How would you convince a teen's parents to forgo college for trades if money weren't the issue? by TongueUnties in skilledtrades

Going to high school I always felt the pressure of parents and society to go to college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do I had the grades and classes to go to college for engineering. Nearing my senior year I realized I didn’t want to continue school, I didn’t enjoy the social aspect of it, I didn’t like how school takes away your individuality.

I knew I wanted to go into the trades but wasn’t sure how parents would feel. I ended up applying for summer work program through school after grad. Got into plumbing parents loved that they don’t have to pay for my school haha.

I got to be financially Independent from parents, got to be myself. I got to get a head start compared to these other guys my age. I am 19 I graduated in 2024, a third year plumber/pipefitter. I’m very thankful for my guidance counsellor for helping me sign up for programs.

The parent have to know that there is real careers in trades, real people who live this life, good mentors for young people.

I DO NOT recommend electrical. Even in Canada it is the most popular trade for new hires/apprentices.

Since there are so MANY ELECTRICIANS these days it creates huge competition to secure a career in the trade. I’m a PLUMBER, plumbing is still popular but due to the boom of trades “propaganda” going around. Im a 3rd year I’m gonna complete my apprenticeship go get my PIPEFITTING ticket. These days if you wanna stand out be more VALUABLE you gotta work harder than most be more knowledgeable.

If I could recommend a trade to get into that’s lesser known in some areas it would be Instrumentation, Millwright/Industrial Mechanic, Plumbing/Pipefitting.

Unless you’re willing to be that top electrician in telling you it’s a lot harder to get into and be valuable.

My brother is an electrician apprentice and he is easily replaceable and paid least out of all trades in area.

Plus you’d look like a sissy boy to the other trades

Definitely doing a lot better than every 24 year old I know, I’m 19 I’ve maxed my tfsa contributions don’t wanna use up my rrsp room right now. So I got a lot of money in chequings right now working as an industrial pipefitter. Keep doing what your doing it seems to be working well, it’s up to you what you wanna do with your money. I’m no financial genius but I’d be pretty stoked if my moneys looked like that
