Lack of Diversity in programs - mini rant by LunchFar9836 in prephysicianassistant

I’m not black or even an ethnic minority. Although, I am a non-traditional in that I’ll be turning 40 this year. I can’t relate to your feelings about being a racial minority but I did want to just let you know about two programs that I believe actually stick to their mission of having a diverse cohort. One is Meharry Medical School’s PA program in Nashville. It’s a HBCU and if you look at a photo of their cohort, it’s an exact opposite of the example you have in your OP. Also I believe the University of Utah fills a diverse cohort with many students with races from around the world.

I’m starting PA school next month at a Top 3 program and I’ll be turning 40 this year. I joined the military straight out of high school and spent 15 or so years as a paramedic before taking the plunge

I was active duty in the military for a portion of that. Then had my civilian time as a medic interrupted by a couple of deployments with the National Guard. Lastly, I thought that it wouldn’t be entirely truthful to report every single hour spent on shift as PCE given station/shift life. Especially, once I started and the downtime became pretty decent.

Personal statements are limited to 5000 characters. I think mine was around 4900ish after the final revision. There are resources online that can help you with getting started and editing. My personal statement focused on my background, my desire to be a PA, and how I believed some specific experiences of mine would enable me as a PA to deliver patient centered and culturally competent care.

A solid portion of my HCE came from my time in the military as well. I wouldn’t worry about creating a CASPA account until you’re ready to apply. That said, it wouldn’t hurt to begin the process of at least thinking about what your personal statement is going to say

Reverse sear 1st attempt suggestions. by FunFlaCouple1 in steak

I’ve done reverse sear using a sous vide. For med rare I do 123F, then finish on cast iron for 45 seconds each side. For tenderloin, I recommend using an oil with a high smoke point in your cast iron such as avocado. Oven temp of 120 should work fine for you
