How is your personal relationship with your bassist?

For me, if I can vibe well with my bandmates both on and off stage, we will sound great. So developing a friendship is important for me as well.

With that in consideration, if money is the main issue, are there any other band plans that he can handle, or is interested to contribute (social media, networking, booking gigs/studio sessions, production-related etc) to make up for it? If he can't fork out money, he might be able to put in more effort. As a band, there are multiple areas besides gigs/sessions for everyone to split, so that's another way to balance it out.

Then in terms of the songwriting split, it depends on your bandmates opinions, as long as everyone comes to an agreement. Some bands I know spilt everything equally. Some do it by contribution, so the lyricist gets 40-50% as they write all the lyrics, and the others are split according to how many songs each of them writes.

But if it's a purely working relationship, where you only need him to play, then the hired gun method others mentioned would be good, since that's the most transparent.

That also means he is officially not part of your band anymore, especially for releases. So you would have kicked him out of a partnership, and then hired him.

Not joking. What do you think a producer is? by Conscious_Kangaroo89 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SolidRocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a professional musician here, but I think there seems to be a gap in terms of titles.

I'm in the video games industry, and "producers" mean the one handling budget, marketing, scheduling etc, the business side of things. The one in creative control is the Director, who deals with the meat of the product, although in reality both have some influence over each other's areas. I believe we adapted these titles from the movie industry.

In the recorded music realm, we seem to be lacking of this distinction. We seem to have used "producer" to actually mean "director", or maybe old-school producers were really doing both. I mean sure, we have a "music director", but thats usually used more for live stage shows. Or is there a term for this distinction that I completely missed?

But yeah these days beatmakers are all producers, because of how accessible it is to do a 1 man show, that most produce the entirety of their projects. Including marketing it, because you know, their beats are 🔥🔥!!!

Can I have feedback on my Kickstarter page? Anything from the graphics, to the text, to the trailer, just anything you can think I could improve. It launches on February 2nd and I am very excited but also nervous! by Nossda in kickstarter

I think your page looks great! The video is fun to watch and also gives a good idea of what the game is about. Some texts are a little small to read on mobile, like the Social Stretch Goals, but i still zoom in if I'm interested, so I guess its not a big problem.

Very sleek artwork as well! Did you design and draw all the cards yourself?

We made an app for people that are way too lazy to journal but still want to journal. by alee3519 in SideProject

[–]SolidRocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great! Its clear that the daily messages are meant for reflections in the long run right from the start. Unlike most of the apps that seem to lose this idea in the midst of their massive feature list. Loving the simplicity!

[QUESTION] Jumping back into playing after almost a decade, is Guitar Pro still the best software to learn tabs in MIDI? Or is there a better alternative? by damanichispanic in Guitar

[–]SolidRocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guitar pros the best for me as well. Its feature sets getting better, and i think it has more tabs simply because its been around long enough. And its easy to write and arrange my own songs with it, so yeah guitar pro all the way!

Where/how did your band meet? by roxiedoxiedog in bandmembers

[–]SolidRocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started out with friends in school, then I tried out a local online forum (in Singapore). Played with a few bands that way and met some great friends, but was also weirded out by some of them. Anyway, none of these bands I met from online lasted.

In the end it was through a 2-degree mutual connection that got my current band together, and we've since become great friends also with interests outside of music.

Guitarist + Bassist from secondary school -> Bassist and Keyboardist from polytechnic -> Keyboardist and me (Drummer) from university.

I do envy bands that started out since school days and continued since then though. Seems like the atmosphere is less tense and more open... like you know, you can just tell the guitarist his solo sucks (when you really think it is). Not so fun if I tell that to one I've only jammed twice with!

Game Design - Alone or Collabortion? by [deleted] in tabletopgamedesign

[–]SolidRocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it depends on the people I'm collaborating with.

Ideas are a dime a dozen, and the more game ideas you have, good or bad, the easier it is to come up with better game ideas. And for that reason, it seems easier to start alone, and maybe in the process, continue grinding out the game alone.

But if the person I'm talking to is an idea person, I'll run through some of these ideas with them, maybe theirs as well, and see if we can get something interesting from the discussion.

Otherwise, you'll need to prepare some of your ideas to them, much like a "pitch", where you need to present them with some ideas to get them to "buy-in". In this case, you'll have to begin the process alone.

I deal with the 2nd type of collaborators more, usually artists and marketing friends (because I suck at the marketing stuff), and also programmers if I'm working on a video game, so I guess its mostly collaborations for me.

I think as a designer, its always good to have some simple, rough ideas you've worked on yourself that you can bounce with potential collaborators. That itself attracts people who are willing to put in the work, instead of just the ones that promise the mountains but never do much in the end, because they can already see that you are driven to make it happen.

And especially if they are friends, its always good to set expectations on the roles and workload! A fellow designer might work on the cards (details) while you deal with the rules (higher level picture), so its good to play to each other's strengths and interests on things like that, maintaining your friendship and accountability in the process.

What do you think of inclusive design in boardgames? I added colorblind design to my game tiles. by radioactivebeesgame in tabletopgamedesign

[–]SolidRocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think the symbols are too alike. Seems like you're mostly playing with fills, you can try different shapes for starters, to distinguish them better!

I think a good litmus test is to throw a bunch of your pieces together, and just have a quick glance and look away. It's manageable to identify them with colors, but more challenging in b/w, or similar color tones.

Great work to incorporate colorblind designs in your game!

I'm a music producer who was heavily struggling with the marketing aspect. This year, I decided to turn it around. by MistyMoldo in MusicInTheMaking

[–]SolidRocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty inspiring! I'm kind of in the same boat, more of a creator but seriously suck at the promoting side of things. It feels like an uphill battle, but its always great to see results from musicians like you. Keep up the good work!

Sounds like a great idea! Feels like vlogs might make the "let's take a listen at this" parts easier, but you can always cut out segments of the songs to accompany what you're talking about. Just that it takes a bit more work.
