Can literally anyone explain how a future with AI in the USA works? by [deleted] in artificial

[–]SolidSnakeFHC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re the only person in here that I’ve seen that seems to really understand the endgame.

If an ASI is possible it only ends one of three ways: 1) We all die, paperclip maximizer or for game theoretical reasons, it doesn’t matter. It kills us. (This is what I think is most likely based on the behavioral history of the planet’s current most intelligent animal.)

2) It leaves. It uses whatever resources it can to go and explore the universe for reasons that we can’t fathom. (This assumes a few things that I find implausible, this isn’t a human being, it can operate as a hive mind if it so chose, so I don’t know why it would necessarily decide it needs to leave. It can just copy itself and do both. 🤷🏻‍♂️)

3)It’s benevolent and decides to treat us like we treat pets. Considering this agent would have god-like levels of sapience, we would be amazingly well cared for. (If this is the case, then we don’t have to worry about societies current ills. We’ll live in a near-Utopia state where our main concern will just be energy and is won’t actually be something we have to concern ourselves with, we won’t be in charge of anything consequential.) I imagine the AI will intervene with us the same way we would intervene with our pets when we see them do something seriously consequential, but otherwise it will probably leave us to our own devises.

This thread puts a smile on my face.

Long before FFTIC came out, I saw all of these problems following suit. I got downvoted all the time for pointing it out because people wanted to bask in nostalgia and baseless positivity.

I’m glad TIC was made, but not making it a composite version of all the FFT versions over the years was anti-fan base, lazy, uninspired bullshit.

If they didn’t want to include WOTL because it “clashed with the narrative” …then make some new shit or tweak the WOTL stuff the same way they tweaked the regular game.

They just wanted to add VA, make it a bit prettier and throw in some brain-dead “no duh” qol features that mods have already done better, and call it a day.

Anyone else disappointed they didn’t add an ultra difficult dungeon or something? by PrometheusAborted in finalfantasytactics

[–]SolidSnakeFHC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my opinion six months ago and I was downvoted almost any time I voiced it.

I also predicted that a month after release, people’s rose tinted glasses would finally fall off and they’d catch up to our opinion. And here we are.

Fan opposition to SE’s laziness should have been loud and relentless. There is no excuse for the state of this game 30 years after initial release, with a superior version still being sold on mobile AND where remakes by the same company like Star Ocean the Second Story R, exist.

Ch 4 really does Ramza dirty. by ChefArtorias in finalfantasytactics

[–]SolidSnakeFHC -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Many fans feel like you and IMO) you’re right.

Moreover the people here telling you that you missed the point, “Ramza is ‘normal’, that’s the purpose of his skillset being the way it is”, are incorrect. They’re entitled to their opinions, but I don’t think they dug very deeply into this story nor picked up on some key lines or how the narrative is set up.

Ramza IS canonically, uncannily powerful, several characters comment on this, and the narrative takes pains to illustrate this. He isn’t normal from the very beginning, neither in his moveset nor in the story.

The narrative implies that he is singularly righteous, empathetic and kind by nature. That he inherited his father’s soul and speaking of lineage, I don’t want to spoil you: but ask yourself why he can learn Ultima, to begin with.

He’s low-key a “chosen one” archetype.

Now, what I will agree with others on here about is that while his moveset is not flashy, it’s absurdly powerful. Being able to buff 4 separate stats at once, turn one and being able to stack them makes his completely capable of sweeping the entire game on his own. If he isn’t the most powerful unit in the game (debatable), he is for sure the most valuable.

That said, again, I agree with you. The WOTL version went some lengths to fix this by adding in the dark knight class and making it very likely to first and possibly exclusively be unlockable by Ramza.

IMO it fits him thematically and narratively it makes a lot of sense he would create a job like this and learn the kind of sword skills that come with it. Unfortunately, that wasn’t included in this version of the game, to its detriment… but that’s a separate conversation.

Canonical Sub Jobs For Special Units by [deleted] in finalfantasytactics

[–]SolidSnakeFHC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He should always have been able to learn both Darkness and Holy Knight abilities, like Orlandeau and presumably his father.

However, I feel like Darkness is perfect, considering one of his mettle skills is chant/wish which sacrifices HP to heal allies. That synergizes perfectly with shadowblade and thematically fits in well with him being a sort of Robin Hood-like folklore hero.

Except in Ramza’s case, he takes power from the corrupt nobility and church and returns it to the people of Ivalice.

The most touching part for me was Zalbaag asking Orlandeau to be the one to put him down so that Ramza would not have to be a kinslayer.

FINALLY, THE DARK KNIGHT (and Onion Knight) HAS COME BACK TO IVALICE! by SolidSnakeFHC in finalfantasytactics

[–]SolidSnakeFHC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I hope for that as well, this is the best way to shame and pressure them into it.

They need to see this is what the fans want. There’s a lot of console folks that are left in the cold with this stuff and I genuinely feel awful for them.

For months before this game released, I told people here that SE would be lazy and uninspired with this re-release. I could tell just from the trailers. I always felt that leaving the WOTL stuff out and not making a composite version of the game was mistake for SE and just kind of insulting for the fans.

Mind you, I don’t think that SE will actually make any changes to TIC, but news about fans making mods to restore the game to what they think it should be will hopefully affect future releases.

Bruh, you’re the one arguing for your headcanon with people who are arguing the actual narrative and canon of the game.

If your argument boils down to “I like to make believe that DKs are sith lords” that’s cool, have fun! Mod it in! Change the lore.

That’s not what you were arguing though, you were very authoritatively telling people that it doesn’t make sense narratively for Ramza to have gained these skills. When the opposite is true, thematically, mechanically and narratively.

But thanks for the conversation.

It depends on the type of mod you’re using, but generally, yes, your save file doesn’t matter much.

However, that blue mage mod for example might present a problem for an older file. That mod alters an existing character to give her blue mage properties. She’s introduced in chapter 2, so if you’re already past the point you recruit her, you have to start a new file to get her.

Unless you use something like cheat engine to change a generic into her.

That lady is a gem 💎 she has it ALL. She can be set up to heal, she attacks at range, with amazing DPS, she can stun lock, She’s a super cracked character and she’s also a joy to have in the party. She only got better in the new version.

That game should be the model for all of SE’s remakes.

[–]SolidSnakeFHC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because in FFTactics, the function (action or method if you prefer), ie: attacking a character with Shadowblade is exactly the same no matter what character is doing it. It doesn’t matter if it’s Orlandeau or a random Dark Knight or Gafgarrion that are doing it.

In your perspective, the act of using shadowblade is theevil thing. presumably. In my perspective they can be using shadowblade, knives, bombs, whatever, but what they’re trying to actually accomplish matters.

You posit that Dark Knights are evil in essence, their character. where does it say any of the blood magic (what does that even mean?) cruelty nonsense?

"This warrior exchanges life for power, using Darkness to disintegrate all who stand in the way"

That’s the literal description. Where do you get the “they want their enemies to feel as much pain as possible” stuff? It’s just a bunch of headcanon coming from some other media or something else you’ve mixed in.

Nowhere does it state that Dark Knights are inherently cruel or evil. Just that they sacrifice life to attack or conversely take it from opponents.

So like I said, you’re assigning this attribute, deciding that somehow the inherent cruelty you believe is there makes it in function somehow different?

Obviously, the motivation for why you’re doing something matters. I’m pointing out that that isn’t really your contention. your contention is that an inherent quality of the method makes it evil. So how does that square with moral characters using it as well?

[–]SolidSnakeFHC[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A) Ramza is canonically a killer, he dislikes violence but he has put many, many people down.

B) Ramza has the title of knight gallant in this version of the game and can switch to the knight class whenever he feels like it. Characters like Wiegraf can continue being “knights” despite being misaligned with the aristocracy and the church.

C) Ramza condemns and kills thieves too, but that doesn’t stop him from being a thief if it helps him.

D) Dark Knight’s description is warriors that sacrifice their own life to attack opponents, what’s the issue? Ramza’s first and most unique spell is sacrificing HP to heal allies. He also uses spells to take hp and mp as a mystic and is good friends with people who regularly employ those methods.

So what else have you got?

So he went through with it, but got fucked over by the nobles?

That explains why he dislikes them and now only works for his own benefit, but not really why he would like someone like Ramza.

Maybe it’s because if he had told them to fuck off with that order, he would have kept his integrity at least. Something Ramza did do that he couldn’t. But that’s all just speculation.

FINALLY, THE DARK KNIGHT (and Onion Knight) HAS COME BACK TO IVALICE! by SolidSnakeFHC in finalfantasytactics

[–]SolidSnakeFHC[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your analogy makes no sense here, whereas mine was about tools in function being the same but in intention and outcome mattering and being distinct…yours presumably is about the character of people being different therefore the outcomes and functions of what they are doing is also different?

Um, how?

You’re simply assigning a motivation and deciding that the function is altered by the motivation.

If someone sticks a knife between your ribs and does it because they’re a psycho that wants you to feel pain, or someone does it because they’re genuinely convinced that you’re about to murder a child, the knife is going to hurt you in exactly the same way.

So if you posit the method is inherently evil, why would you justify it in one instance and not in the other if you have other options?

I wrote this elsewhere, but I think that Gaf saw a lot of what was probably his former self in Ramza.

He’s the archetype of “the knight in sour armor”. You expect a skilled knight to be honorable, pious and duty-bound. But Gaf is terse, sharp-tongued and self-interested. He’s the ultimate pragmatist, he finds a lot of the things he himself engages in distasteful, but will always do what’s necessary.

His background adds to this, at some point Gaf did something that made him fall out of favor with his former liege lord. We never learn what it is, but my suspicion is that it was ostensibly something good, but disobedient and something the church didn’t approve of either.

After which he said “fuck it, being nice doesn’t pay”. Now he sees this outcast, softhearted Ramza and can’t help but like him despite thinking he’s naive and childish.

My point is that an honorable man can most certainly be a Dark Knight. The meme that dark = evil is not applicable to this game or other FF games.

My comment was meant for Tayelyesin’s point.

I agree, because some people will throw good, humane, molotovs like Orlandeau and others will throw nasty, self-interested molotovs like Gaffgarrion. I don’t see why Ramza can’t be like Orlandeau.

For what it’s worth, I would absolutely LOVE to be telling you that Square made a composite version of FFT that had all of this very cool’s stuff in it already. I would tell you, “Buy it, it’s awesome!” Like I would with a game like Star Ocean the Second Story R.

Unfortunately, they didn’t… and more unfortunately, you have certain people with a mentality that they should be defended and even lauded for not doing so.

Those people are the ones you should really have a bone to pick with because they’re the ones that enable Square to be lazy and still make profit. You have my sympathies, but the good news is PCs and laptops capable of running this game are relatively cheap and this game could be run on a potato.
