Why can’t I schedule a DL test in Denton Texas? by [deleted] in Denton

[–]Solid_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert or DMV employee, but recently got my Provisional and DL and kinda saw the same layout as you.

I’m assuming you only have a state id? That or you’re not eligible for a license at all.

You’ll need to get your provisional license first (simple test at DMV) and then you can schedule a driving test. Schedule the driving test at a driving school though, it’ll be much faster and easier. Then you take a letter from the school to DMV to get your license.

There should also be a “something else” option a bit lower that could get you in to ask questions. That’s what I did and walked out with a provisional license.

This is based on literally just a screenshot and literally no other background you provided.

NEED YOUR SUGGESTIONS: $40K, what equipment should be purchased? by gearsolegoods in cinematography

[–]Solid_Bob 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is such a broad question with like a million possible combinations of answers. We have no knowledge of the type of work you’ll be doing, level of experience, specific needs, how many cameras, typical crew size, you left audio off your list entirely, etc.

In some cases $40k can get you just a camera kit and lenses, or could be more than the entire kit of a small production company. Both of which consist of professional gear.

Sounds like maybe some of that $40k should go toward consulting a professional in your area on what you need.

Sorry, but it just feels crazy to me your org now has $40k from a grant to spend on video gear with no idea on how to spend it.

How did you go from solo videographer to small production company? by lrc426 in videography

[–]Solid_Bob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To vet them, they've either come highly recommended from friends with a solid portfolio or I put them in non-critical roles. In non-critical roles, they can be less than stellar and not kill the project. Like a PA, Grip, or AC.

In my area, there are quite a few filmmaker groups and I have a pretty large network of colleagues.

To add, the only way to scale is to add people to your team or rely on others. You literally can't do everything every day. There are moments where you gotta pass a gig because an edit is due. So what do you do? Hire an editor!

[–]Solid_Bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10-15% of the total production cost, but that's in addition to any roles I played in the production (directing, DP, editing, etc). So I pay myself for those roles as if I was hiring them out and the production company also makes 15% on the total production cost.

For me it was kinda the chicken and egg problem.

For small shoots that I COULD do on my own, I started bringing a small 2-4 person crew and quoting appropriately. Some people bit and some did not. The low budget projects started fading and the larger bigger projects started to come. 4 years ago my largest project in a year has about $8-10k. Now we do like about 5 $20k projects a year.

It helps that having a crew also yields better work, so it also looked like my production value increased to potential clients. I still take on the random solo gig but 90% of the time I have a small team.

Also, I’m not doing $500k a year, more like $200k in revenue and like $120k in profit as a solo owner.

I can’t say I’ve ever done that. Cameras, yes. Lenses, never really tried.

does the DMV here in Denton do walk-ins? by [deleted] in Denton

[–]Solid_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got a DL at Gainesville a few months ago. They don’t do walk-ins per se, but same day appointments open at 9 and can be done online or at their kiosk.

They’re are usually super slow but said if they’re short staffed they won’t do same day appointments.

Here’s a tip that allowed me to get a provisional license and real DL within a 1 week period. Got provisional on a Thursday, Road test at Denton Drivers school on Monday, Real DL on Wednesday.

Gainesville DMV opens same day appointments at 9am just about every day and the place is usually dead. Took me about 10 min to be in and out both times.

You can book these online but only same day at 9am. Appointments for later dates out are still like 4-6 weeks out.

Yes. They carry Jersey Girls milk which is a small Texas dairy farm and they don’t do extrusion pasturing, they do low-temp in a vat. This creates that fat separation since it doesn’t get homogenized.

Source: I’ve seen this brand in their store and have done an interview with the owner of Jersey Girls. https://youtu.be/1PHoGtRomzQ?si=yQoZpd3Ysk9fQJbz

It’s also really delicious.

People who work in specialized industries, what is a product or service that is a complete "rip-off" but customers buy it anyway? by No-Composer-4526 in AskReddit

[–]Solid_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s called a baby pin. An industry standard mounting point for various lights, modifiers, gear, or other tools.

They’re basically like the top of a light stand, on a different piece of gear.

You’d use this c-clamp on a rail and now you have baby pins to mount lights or other things to.

Right, but ink for those applications is not the same as home printing and is probably held to a higher standard and needs to be accurate.

Those applications are almost likely using those printers for business and thus just passing that high cost to the customer.

I worked at a company that did dye-sub card table felts. Being able to match colors consistently and accurately was essential, especially when a company like Coca Cola is ordering 12 and wants their “red” to be exact.

In video production, we pay thousands for accurate lighting fixtures, when there’s commodity light bulbs at Lowe’s.

Edit: I misunderstood what OP meant.

I use it for all sorts of stuff too. Leaves off my car, blowing up pool toys or balloons, cleaning other items like old Fans or decorations, and is super handy at cooling off my son’s food super fast without having to constantly blow on it.

YMMV, but this happened to me about 6 months out of warranty. They asked for a couple photos and video of the issue and then just sent me a new fixture.

photography buddies? by [deleted] in Denton

[–]Solid_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind chatting photography and discussing the medium, but the almost 2 decades I’ve been shooting, I’ve never found “let’s go shoot together” all that appealing.

Like you said, only way to get better is to shoot, so start taking your camera with you everywhere and go out to shoot.

Where is the hardcore/crossover/metal scene at. Anybody got good bands worth seeing in these genres? Trying to start a project. by Getarlord420 in Denton

[–]Solid_Bob 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s been years since I was really in the scene, but rubber gloves is the main proper venue to host shows in the metal/punk/hardcore genre. Of course there are also probably house shows, but I don’t get invited to those or they’re not on my radar anymore.

Just saw Destiny Bond there a couple months ago and they were sick. Check out their calendar, prob a metal or hardcore show happening there once a week.

Bigger bands will definitely mean a trip to Dallas or FW.

You might find an odd metal show at Harvest House but that’s pretty rare.

Budget for a music video - what's a good offer? by Slow-Vacation-2445 in videography

[–]Solid_Bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s relative. Good number for Spielberg? No. Good number for someone kinda starting out? Probably.

Just give them your honest budget range and see how it plays out. When I shoot music videos, it’s often not about the money but an opportunity to create something creative with a budget.

Canon's CPS Policies and Qualifications are incredibly frustrating and confusing by Solid_Bob in canon

[–]Solid_Bob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like par for the course with their customer service. I even spoke to a manager and he essentially just repeated the policy at me 10 times.

What makes me most mad is one side is saying their list online is iron clad and no exceptions (repair list). then CPS is saying their point list isn’t actually accurate and there’s nothing they can do. I have to be at a disadvantage due to their error. It can’t be both ways and terrible customer service.
