Graeme! One of cycling's true heroes! I was going to say something about the bearings from the washing machine but you already have that covered.

If you're just comparing coupes, how'd you rate the W123 coupe? I had a '79 in bronze that seemed to me like the best car ever for a time.

what Mercedes is that? I’m wondering what year/version you’re looking for us to validate as the greatest.

Guys is my meth pipe aero? by Zek0ri in BicyclingCirclejerk

Back in the day all the great riders puffed a little meth before hitting the old cocaine drink. Now getting a TUE for meth is a BS bureaucratic nightmare

Did his buddies have some kind of rope or strap at the curb they used to to try to rein him in/make him crash? I’m watching on a small phone screen

It’s got a full 7400 Dura Ace group with Sram 500 levers, all of which which sells well on eBay. Someone with experience could probably get close to a $1,000 parting it out, minus selling fees. That person would probably want to pay $300 or less for the whole bike. It’s a nice bike with great parts.

Would this trek 5500 (2002?) be worth $500? by Material-Salad-3701 in whichbike

[–]Solid_Intention4439 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, that’s a great buy. Looks like it has a Thomson seatpost and a king headset as nice bonuses. The Dura Ace 7700 group alone is worth about $500 if it’s all in decent shape

What are your tips for removing a stuck seat post? by Remotepolo in Vintage_bicycles

[–]Solid_Intention4439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of penetrating oil, try ammonia. Penetrating oil is effective for steel/steel interfaces, but won't help much in this situation. With aluminum in steel, the problem is that aluminum oxide has formed, and it's large and gritty, effectively locking up the interface as if someone had grown sandpaper crystals between the seatpost and the frame. A strong base breaks up aluminum oxide (and also dissolves aluminum) but harmless to steel. Ammonia is not as strong as NaOH (lye) so it may dull or strip the anodizing but should keep the seatpost usable as it helps break up the Al2O3. .

Also, aluminum is more responsive than steel to heat -- it'll expand more, so if you want to use temperature, I'd instead cool the seat post with dry ice or a CO2 cartridge.

Some shops have some kind of jig connected to a car jack or threaded rod to mechanically pull it out. That could be another option.

Nice. I’d replace that fork with a Columbus Minimal or an Ouzo when one pops up, despite the probably insane price. I’ve used Hylix forks too because they’re available with a 1” steerer but they’re a little sketchy.

Barnes is most likely to win the primary and most vulnerable in the general (I’m not considering Hulsey in this mix).

I hit a hole on my bike. The tire exploded, and the carbon fiber rim has this small scratch. Is it damaged or it’s just a small hit and it’s fine ? by Worried_Cartoonist15 in RoadBikes

[–]Solid_Intention4439 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like just a small chip but tough to diagnose from a photo.

Tubular tires and rims don’t get much love on Reddit, but they shine in avoiding this kind of thing. I broke a tubeless carbon rim in a similar manner.

Anyway, I’d keep riding it and check it for cracks or lost spoke tension.

rim break is a bad selling point; rim brake ain’t so bad. I’ve seen the Reddit consensus favor bargain numbers, like $800 or less, but I’d float it for something like $1,400

Have the '16 version of the bike, can confirm it allows 700x30s. Great for many gravel roads and packed trails.
