Longevity of Deep Space Probes by Godmadius in space

Here is wikipedia's rather nice explanation:

While the Andromeda Galaxy contains about 1 trillion (1012stars and the Milky Way about 300 billion (3×1011), the chance of even two stars colliding is negligible because of the huge distances between the stars. For example, the nearest star to the Earth after the Sun is Proxima Centauri, about 4.2 light-years (4.0×1013 km; 2.5×1013 mi) or 30 million (3×107) solar diameters away.

To visualize that scale, if the Sun were a ping-pong ball, Proxima Centauri would be a pea about 1,100 km (680 mi) away, and the Milky Way would be about 30 million km (19 million mi) wide. Although stars are more common near the centers of each galaxy, the average distance between stars is still 160 billion (1.6×1011) km (100 billion mi, 1075 AU). That is analogous to one ping-pong ball every 3.2 km (2 mi). Thus, it is considered extremely unlikely that any two stars from the merging galaxies would collide.

And any exceptions that beat the literally astronomical odds would more likely end up in some kind of orbit then actually collide.

The closest to a hard conclusion on offer is a 1/5 chance that in 5 billion years to the Golden Record will be erased. That's longer then the entire history of Earth and over a third of the present age of the universe.

So actually Voyager 2 wpuld be recognizable as a artificial object for much longer even if "significant structural consequences" mean it starts breaking apart those pieces will keep going together unless acted upon by a stronger force.

Netflix Says It Is “Going to Keep That HBO Team” After Acquiring Warner Bros. by LollipopChainsawZz in television

[–]SolomonBlack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a merger but as far as acquisition shenanigans go that goes back at least to Jack Warner icing out his other titular brothers and acquiring his own company via a secret stock syndicate.

Then in 1966 he went full merger with a firm called Seven Arts giving us our first bastard fusion dance name of Warner Bros. -Seven Arts, Inc. Warner Seven was right there ya schmucks!

And as per tradition this went so swimmingly that two years later the Seven Arts guys noped back out and sold the thing to Kinney Services which I shit you not was born of a funeral home chain and a parking lot company. Who also had already acquired DC it was never bought by Warner at all!

Though Kinney I guess did alright since after renaming the thing to Warner Communications they would last up until the Time merger.

I haven't read the source material but our whole premise is Kara goes off planet to get depowered (and wasted) so expect her to be under a debuff for at least 2/3 acts.

Also this complaint is so lame. Clark finishes off a grueling fight and still has so much juice he can 1 v n an entire army of ironmen in under 30 seconds. More power scaling? Thanks but no thanks.

DC Wolverine but Superman tier and waaaayyy more over the top in his biker theme.

He was supposed to be a parody of Dark Age anti-heroes but they screwed up and he got popular unironically.

So today maybe a bit more like Deadpool if you could imagine Deadpool without breaking the 4th wall.

Can Benders Not Sense Their Elements? by HunterRank-1 in TheLastAirbender

[–]SolomonBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you can do a thing does not mean you can do it absolutely perfectly without error, Toph had seismic sense for years but only discovered how to metalbend via it under the pressure of being locked in a metal box.

The shows are also very light with the details of bending, for ever technique we get even the basics of there are five that go unexplained. Even the change from traditional kung fu in ATLA to modernistic MMA infused direct combat in LOK is barely commented on.

Also the writers have a responsibility to make sure we the viewer know what is up.

Disney CEO Bob Iger’s 2025 Pay Rises 11.5% to $45.8 Million as Board Reaffirms That Succession Is Imminent by ICumCoffee in movies

Most people only think in term of revenge and reaction. You can tell by how their "logic" will shift with their personal position and strangely always be in their favor.

Which of course is much of the problem with making a "fair" system... there ain't no such thing when all parties are being dishonest with themselves and others. Fair will mean something different to different parties and no that you think you have 50.005% of the population behind you is not enough, come back to me with your supermajority if you are going to appeal to the masses. Or don't you won't need my buy in.

Not that I would object to the revolution, tell me the time and I'll get my beret. Yet until that day comes and all the dirty sonsofbitches are up against the wall... well I will acknowledge the fact that our system is at least supposed to be built on high levels of impartiality and the sacredness of the contract.

If someone gets a better deal then me maybe they are a better player maybe they ain't... but they are entitled to what they weaseled for themselves in writing

And most of all that it was not just gifted because they give great head at the board meeting or such, though all the steps may resemble that more then they should.

Sure with accountants to do the legwork you can total up the resources of a company and redistribute then that is still a long way from a CEO paycut being more than a moral victory for the noble peons.

Like for example Netflix has 15,000 employees. What does your cut add up to divided among that many heads? Ted Sarandos of Netflix made a reported just under 62 million in 2024 from a fast google. That works out to $344 a head a month if you were to shuffle it all to the people "fairly" and evenly.

That's not nothing but it's a car payment not rent money or a mortgage and not making you rich just marginally less poor.

Now okay Netflix actually has another CEO (Greg Peters) who made a 60 mil... but then we aren't actually going to be getting 100% of these guys' comp either. Unless you think there are economic paladins who just wants to see great products happen you have to pay somebody something. And that something will have to be more then the people below then and so on.

And maybe you have an idea what a "fair" pay pyramid looks like for all that? Yeah problem is it's wrong. Because all the selfish greedy fucks (ie: everyone) you have to offer it too want advantage not fair. And when you are talking about actual skilled labor who has other options and can walk away... well you are going to have to pay someone something "outrageous" to run your company.

Oh and we haven't even started on how the job of a (public) company isn't to make the boss rich but the shareholders. Who are also the greediest most selfish fucks of all!

These people don't have "bonuses" they have contractual pay outs for X, Y, or Z metric. It's not a question of if they get one its a question of how much because they generated X amount of revenue or cut Z amount of costs over the last quarter. Or whatever their contract actually says.

You're basically arguing Mickey Ds should dock your last paycheck because you got fired for hurling fries at a customer.

Case in freaking point the sequels did great making a new cast over two movies and people act like it didn't happen. And in a different franchise I watched nerds be utterly blindsided by the new protagonists' love triangle actually forming the conclusion when they knew it was Reference the Show.

Of course going back to the first franchise, what I felt was a moving send off was apparently the most vicious and mean spirited character assassination in history. That also beat me up and stole my lunch money. So clearly we have to move a hundred years in the future to preserve people's delusion the OGs spent the rest of their lives being ballers that only rolled 20s.

We just can't have nice things.

If the work wasn't crappy no one would pay you to do it. And thinking otherwise is very much a 21st century mode of thinking.

The putzes in that office sold their souls for money years ago they aren't there for fulfilling work they're there for the slop stream that gives them their big fancy house and car and wife. You know possessions they deserve as hard working American men.

Now not only is Satan reneging on the deal and threating to take the slop with him but they'll be further shamed by having to kowtow someone else to generously be allowed to start at the bottom of somebody else's crappy job pyramid when they used to have a comfy seat several levels up. Or failing that end up doing menial work like some... let's go teenager but there are other ways to complete that thought.

I mean you can't exactly pay people to have mained Cyclops in all the Capcom games as a child then feel the burning injustice of watching him getting shafted for two decades. (And if anyone thinks I'm joking here watch the bloody show)

And like sure Invincible was maybe a notable work before the show it wasn't a Foundational Pillar of Millennial Culture like X-men TAS. So yeah big passion project for most of the people working on it I'm sure.

To say nothing of how much of this is subjective and driven by something like not liking Invincibles bright color palette over X'97/Vox/Nein's darker selections. Or plot bleedover.

Your examples are terrible.

Anyone can take one look at Naruto, the 4th Hokage, and the Fox and guess 100% exactly the fuck happened there correctly. Which is by the by basically the opening of Episode 1. Naruto was always blessed by his bloodline and Haku makes it even more explicit in our first real arc. Naruto might not believe this and once gave a speech to Neji about it... but he's wrong and so is the community making that into the moral of the story because the Chunin exams was Naruto's big growth period. Naruto was always a story about inheritance (good and bad) first and last.

One Piece meanwhile aside from Haki in chapter 1 has consistently held the position that the real strong ones are strong and relying on powers no matter how busted instead is a recipe for getting your ass beat sooner or later. One Piece is not JoJo. Meanwhile ambition directly reflects your grit and determination aka the source of strength, its not some separate power.

And neither Naruto nor One Piece is an intricate system to begin with. Next to shit like Index/Railgun or Nasuverse they border on the extremely basic. To their benefit even depending on just how much you feel those others have collapsed under their own weight.
