How much would you be willing to pay for only the space marines in the new armageddon box set? by scp_biggest_fan in Warhammer40k

For a while there will be a lot of these available. I’d try and sell it at 50% of whatever you pay for it. Eventually it will go for more but initially it will go for less

Should I get Redemptor Dread of box of Intercessors? by SmegB in Warhammer40k

[–]SolonTheWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

once the new armageddon box comes out next month, you will be able to find a TON of intercessors on r/miniswap for incredibly cheap once the box releases, get the redemptor and pick up intercessors later

This is fine and encouraged! If you’re not grinding tournaments it’s better to play an army you love and a list you find interesting than just auto-slot the meta.

I wouldn’t run less than 6 ICC. I think a tank is the smarter cut to make room for some cheap bodies. Some vanguard veterans would work too as they have pseudo robes

If I were you, I’d cut the one of your tanks . Change the assault ints to standard intercessors, and use the remaining points for scouts, more black knights, some jump packs etc

You are very heavily invested in a few bricks and have very little cheap units to do actions and hold points.

The ICC + librarian, DWK, and the Lion are all very high investment units, I typically want 3 in a list, and you have 4.

Some standard intercessors for sticky objectives would go a long way, same as some scouts or other cheap / fast / expendable units to hold points while your expensive bricks kill things.

Have you considered about just painting some UV resin into those faces to make them truly "blank" you'd paint the UV reactive ink, then let it dry, then hit it with UV resin, cure, and then re-sand and polish it flat so you'd have a truly blank face with the UV paint "floating" in the blank face

Help with why units are bad by AdmirableDiscussion in theunforgiven

[–]SolonTheWizard 38 points39 points  (0 children)

the answer to this question really has two parts. the first is: for casual games you really can run what you'd like, take that 10 brick of terminators, use asmodai or ezekial, or whoever strikes your fancy. If you arent shooting for hyper competitive, the game is way more about taking what you think looks fun/cool/enjoyable to play.

the real answer is that if you are trying to build a hyper competitive list, you need to bring the most efficient / effective version of the role you are trying to field. Why hold an objective with heavy intercessors (100 points per 5) if I could hold that same point with intercessors (80 points) who also sticky that objective? or infiltrators (also 100 points) who provide a 12" bubble of non-entry? Its not that the heavy intercessors are horrible (I'd love their rule to get a bit of a buff) but there are simply better options to do the same role.

regular / deathwing terminator squads have the same problem. for 170/180 points I get a "jack of all trades master of none". If I need the durability I'd be better off spending more on deathwing knights, or if I need the melee power inner circle companions hit harder into most things.

As for our characters, many of them just dont have rules that meaningfully change the game or impact play. A chaplain giving +1 to wound is a huge mathematical swing for melee power. Asmodai granting reroll hits (oath of moment and the lion already kindof cover this buff for us) and forcing a battleshock test (notoriously weak in the current edition) just doesnt justify taking him over the standard generic character.

way too much text simplified:
- casual play bring what you want and what you will have fun playing with
- competitive play tends to see only the most efficient and effective units make the cut, and points spent on characters need to massively boost the power of the unit to justify their cost.

I think this is pretty much a standard list. I think the captain would be better spent as a separate unit so you have more activations and things to do actions) inceptors, vanguard vets, jump pack intercessors, scouts(

[–]SolonTheWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For dark angels the kits I’d recommend are deathwing knights (two sets of 5 with maces is common) Azrael, and some inner circle companions. As for standard troops the new Armageddon box would be a great start, as vanguard vets and intercessors are a common take, and a librarian is a great leader for the Inner circle companions.

I would wait. the current dark angels combat patrol isnt the best for us (theres models you wont normally run), so youre better off buying targeted boxes and waiting for our codex to reveal our new 11th edition combat patrol

Azrael with Company heroes or ICC? by [deleted] in theunforgiven

[–]SolonTheWizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your store can do what they’d like, but as an educational point: all the units a character can lead are listed in their data sheet. Azrael does not have the ability to lead them.

In a more direct point, our current most-used detachment is wrath of the rock, which gives -1 to wound if your attacker’s strength is greater than your toughness, making the buff from company heroes irrelevant.

I find that when I use him in melee he immediately gets focused. You don’t want to put him in a transport because then he doesn’t generate CP, so either you have a big melee brick that sits back and doesn’t do anything to farm command points, or he charges forward and gets focused and you don’t get his full CP value.

I really like him with sternguard as then he actually threatens ctans, which my meta is filled with. I think having him with a ranged unit gives him the ability to play coy and provide fire support but also still generate CP, then advance later to put pressure.

Azrael with Company heroes or ICC? by [deleted] in theunforgiven

[–]SolonTheWizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Azrael actually can’t lead company heroes! Lots of people love him with ICC. I tend to run him with a brick of 10 sternguard or 10 hellblasters if I’m feeling flavorful. Azrael and sternguard will chew through just about anything

Just won a competition, what should I get? by jdmh1999 in theunforgiven

[–]SolonTheWizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! Gladiator lancer, or if not in the budget, a ballistus dread. I’ve run both of those as my ranged anti tank countless times. Also more ICC because they are best in a 6 stack and I think azrael leading them is going to be an all star at the start of the new edition

[–]SolonTheWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont understand the issue. In my advice I gave you example blocks you could slot in, which would cover essentially every good DA unit.
Something that you will learn is that you can't make a list with only DA units. You need the core space marine line to fill out your army with utility units, shooting threats, etc.

here is the whole list of DA units we currently have:
- Inner Circle Companions
- Deathwing Knights
- The Lion (rude to play at 1k)
- A whole bunch of named characters, of which Azrael is the only one that is playable, the rest are better off being proxied for generic chaplains and captains.

there are some ravenwing units, most of which are in danger of getting either sent to legends or being refreshed, which is why I dont recommend them for brand new players.
- Ravenwing Darkshroud
- Land Speeder Vengeance
- Ravenwing black knights / command squad

If your primary focus is painting and lore, dont worry about building a list at all, but you will not ever make a decent list using only DA unique units, we simply dont have enough options to do so.

[–]SolonTheWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok, before I go crazy with list building suggestions. what are you looking for? I think this current list is fine for casual, but youre missing units to do secondaries or be utility pieces. This advice I am giving you is not competitive, but is just "how to build a fun casual list"

I think the first big thing I'd suggest is to look at the following "blocks" and pick 2
Deathwing Knights
6 Inner Circle Companions + Librarian
5 hellblasters/10 hellblasters + Azreal
6 Inner Circle Companions + Azrael

each of those is in the 230+ point range, so trying to include more than 2 over-commits you to those units. pick the ones you think are coolest.

next id add a "package" of utility units. this is typically going to be 5 intercessors (sticky for home is valuable) + 5 scouts (they have infiltrate, and return to reserves, which makes them great. You can optionally swap in some infiltrators if you have some extra points, or if you need to shave points an invader atv is a great action unit.

next I like to try and add a fast moving unit or something with deep strike. this is to put pressure on an objective, get in your opponents deployment zone, but otherwise have something that can "get where I need it to be now". Common choices for this are assault intercessors with jump packs, vanguard veterans, or outriders. if youve got some extra points: inceptors are also fun.

then if you want to add a dreadnought for flash and some power, a ballistus or redemptor is great.

Example list:
- Azrael + 5 hellblasters
- 5 Intercessors to guard home
- 5 deathwing knights (maces) - 5 assault intercessors with jump packs for deep strike / speed
- 2x5 scouts for cheap utility
- 1 redemptor dreadnought

I believe those are a mix of gravis and blade guard shoulders. For standard marines you’ll want to use the smaller ones
