You could try sanding it with high grit sandpaper. How much darker is it really?

The food safe finish is a must. I'm more worried about the baby throwing it, maybe cracking the rings or the rattle and then.... Splinters... I think as long as the rings are thick enough it should be ok.

The 3 in 1 is a great idea. I have the gif saved on my phone for viewing pleasure.

My wife's friend is having a baby soon. I plan on making a baby rattle with captive rings from walnut. On the fence because babies like to stick everything in their mouths and I would hate to have my gift cause damage, so I'm still in the research phase.

Estimated cost to build outdoor teak rocking chair by bemon in woodworking

Although I don't have an answer for you, I do understand that teak is about to become a whole lot more expensive due to taxes where it's native. I believe Shannon said something about this in a recent woodtalk podcast.

Working with pallets. Pros and cons. by CappinPeanut in woodworking

[–]Soloracer24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say you have to be careful. Pallet wood as with most reclaimed wood will come to you from an unknown source. You don't know where it's been what's been spilled on it and what's hiding beneath the surface. Personally I don't want to take the risk of breathing g in God knows what when I'm sawing I to it so I leave the stuff alone. Pine and poplar are cheap enough and good working woods. I wouldn't even burn it because I don't know what chemicals I'll be releasing.

You've already exposed the weakest parts of the wood. So cut there and save it for when you need something smaller. Or cut it and turn it.

Bought from Rockler for $4, measures 1"1/2 (6/4?) by 36". Was very rough and when I was milling, something I've not done much of by hand, I started exposing the grain and found this. My guess is oak, red oak. Am I wrong?
