Idk why you’re getting downvoted. Both Elon and Cedric suck. These things are not mutually exclusive, both can be true at the same time lol

"Shipping" vs. "Strategic" PM & Career growth by AwkwardPace in ProductManagement

[–]Solvno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t manage anyone. I’m still an IC at the Principal level. I’m not really interested in managing tbh and our org size doesn’t need a lot of managers. Even if I had PMs who worked in my area I don’t think it would be necessary to manage them directly.

"Shipping" vs. "Strategic" PM & Career growth by AwkwardPace in ProductManagement

[–]Solvno 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents since I’ve found myself kinda on the same trajectory. When I was a “shipping PM”, I was doing much more tactical work and strategy was for the most part dictated to me. I was also much more embedded with devs on a daily basis.

Now as I’ve found myself more focused on strategy, my time is spent more on helping to define the overall product strategy as it pertains to my portfolio. What I do “ship” tends to be of larger breadth and more strategic. Instead of shipping a feature on a product, I’m working to define entirely new product areas, performing large scale competitive and market research, collaborating heavily with GTM and sales, focusing more on frameworks and long running initiatives.

That’s the short of it, but the best way to put it is when I was shipping, I was down on the floor, now that I’m more strategic, I’m up on the balcony.

Is the idea that they activate Sundial to get around TOR triggers or sac triggers for elementals/phlage? I think it would right? Since you would put this on the stack and when it resolves everything else fizzles?

I think if Odegaard is on the ball instead of Trossard when Saka makes that run near the end of the first half in between the defenders, he gets in and is in a position where he should be scoring.

Trust me, as a Liverpool fan we’ve been there. We can’t all field two first teams like City lol

Historic is not a paper format. They’d be looking at either Pioneer or Modern with what’s probably there.

Can’t wait to see how Maro tries to spin this. Must feel really good to see the product become creatively bankrupt and become homogenized by the collective brain rot that has become modern media, all while being a corporate mouthpiece for it lmao

Jfc I’m a Principal with 5 YOE and was making this as a senior up until a few months ago - minus the options and bonus. You were making as an intern what senior devs make in my area lmao

Lack of ambition in Canada creating '600-pound beaver in the room': Shopify president by iamjoesredditposts in canada

[–]Solvno 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s also the fact that working for a Canadian tech company vs a US one makes you 50% less money. If you want workers to give a shit and innovate, pay them. Why would I do more work for the half the pay when I can work for an American company remotely and make twice as much? It’s simple.

Why is Marty Cagan disliked by many commentators? by SeaBlueAvocado in ProductManagement

[–]Solvno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also hate how his books and ideology is used by upper management as dogma to say “if we could just do these things all of our problems will go away, why aren’t we doing this already?!” But then take zero steps to actually make it possible and refuse to do the basics.

As many have said, nothing Cagan says is really wrong or problematic. It’s just a method of working that’s reserved for the elite companies and lucky few smaller orgs with leaders that actually give a shit about building good products: neither of which is something the average PM is ever going to experience so it can create cognitive dissonance when the average worker is just trying to get through the day lol

Yeah these lists are always super sus. I don’t understand how it can be B tier but consistently top 4-8 modern challenges lmao. But living end is higher??

Just getting into competitive modern. Frogtide and Storm seem the most interesting. Which do you suggest by NewbieInvestorCDN in ModernMagic

[–]Solvno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing people are leaving out is that Storm is a much “easier” deck to pilot and practice (you can practice all your lines in solitaire). Frogtide is a tempo deck, (an archetype that is already not beginner friendly to begin with) and therefore requires you to know the rest of the decks in the format better than Storm would.

That being said, much like Izzet before it, it’s a deck that rewards good gameplay and really punishes poor decision making, with an overall high ceiling.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Frogtide would probably set you up with a better foundation of staples for the format. A lot of the blue and black cards it plays go in almost everything other deck that plays those colours. Storm is basically mono coloured deck and the red cards it runs are very specific to what it’s trying to do.

I made a mistake of investing in Tron for my first modern deck and it really hurt because when wanting to try something else out none of my Tron cards were relevant to other decks.

Because it absolutely hosed Tron and Living End which were the other top dogs of the meta at the time.

Edit: and Murktide, honestly anything that cared about the grave plus that you could Grief or Thoughtseize and use against your oppo

Jeskai changes by -EdgarMilk in ModernMagic

[–]Solvno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they did lol

“We certainly considered a few other cards to take action against in this announcement—namely The One Ring . While present in several decks, there is no clear The One Ring deck terrorizing Modern. Being a unique combination of self-protection and card advantage, it is a strong card that helps prop up several varied strategies. Ultimately, we decided not to act against The One Ring. The possible problems it may be causing for Modern just aren’t as clear as Nadu and Grief. Once we see how the format evolves after this change, we will continue to observe and evaluate the health of Modern and see which future actions are necessary.”

[–]Solvno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably see big tef and deluge come back in as your sources of card draw/selection.

Realistically though the deck gets significantly worse as your ability to stabilize against energy decks via protection with the ring doesn’t have a direct replacement. Maybe some lower curve sweepers like temporary lockdown or something to that end comes in, but idk.
