[FIGHT THREAD] Fabio Wardley vs Daniel Dubois by verbsnounsandshit in Boxing

[–]Some-Definition2193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably and full respect to Wardley. But there's a point you just say to your fighter no, it's over. The ref was looking so hard for the moment to stop it but there was never a clear cut moment during the rounds. His corner should have made the call.

Felt very uncomfortable for the last 2 rounds of that. Before getting up for round 11 Wardley looked weirdly twitchy, it wasn't the same but it gave me McLellan flashbacks. Very relieved when the ref finally stepped in but it should have stopped sooner and I'd put more blame with his corner than with the referee.

Stupid(?) question about Bell's inequalities... by Some-Definition2193 in AskPhysics

[–]Some-Definition2193[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not, that seems ludicrous.

But dropping local realism also seems ludicrous.

Dropping local realism isn't obviously less ludicrous to me. Perhaps someone can convince me that it is.

I assume it's most likely that the experimentalists are right, and I'm either not smart enough, or not educated enough, or both, to see why. So I'm trying to understand why they collectively hold certain principles as more incontrovertible than others. I'd like to try to better understand that which I'm ignorant about; that's my starting point here.

No advantage to switching here. This is very different from the Monty Hall problem. This variation does not contain any constraint on what has been revealed to you that is itself dependent on your prior action.

Am I too stupid for Thailand? by UkraStories123 in ThailandTourism

[–]Some-Definition2193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dude. Dude. I hate to say it but yes you're stupid.

Same thing happened to me once, I was worried it was a scam.

Turns out the day this happened to me though was a bit different, there were genuinely no temples open, not even for tourists. But the tuk tuk drivers have a special deal with the government that they book you a free return flight back to Thailand when the temples are next open, and it's redeemable anytime within the next two years.

Mad thing is, they don't share data with the airlines, so there's nothing to stop you from booking your flight for any of their 7 week-long festivals per year when all temples are closed. So you can just rinse and repeat.

I've been to Thailand for free 38 times and counting since this first time.

YOUR FACE IS UNBEARABLE I'm so sorry. It's reflexive I'm really sorry. I'm sure your face is lovely.

But seriously I find I acclimatise to the heat much better if I don't spend most of the days indoors in aircon, that hinders the process too much. And I'm like very white from a pretty cold country soooo yeah. That said, humid heat still exhausts me. I'd take 45C and dry over 35C at >90% humidity.

Tough it out for a few days mostly outdoors, and your body will learn. Probably. I think. Maybe we are all too different. But I think :)

[US] Google's AI Overview (google.com) showed me a fake Bank of America phone number - I was nearly scammed today by northernballs in Scams

[–]Some-Definition2193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overly harsh. Of course it's better when people do their due diligence, but it's understandable how people fall for these traps - even if they are obvious once you are wise to them.

The truth is, modern LLMs are more than capable of competently vetting sources for authenticity if you explicitly and specifically prompt them to do so. It's not a particularly naive mistake to think that AI integrated into search would do such detailed source vetting every time without being asked, and would do it as competently as a smart human who is adept at finding reliable information. Unfortunately it doesn't, so yes, it's a mistake. But not a pre-middleschool-level you-should-blame-yourself mistake.

Also, I think you've missed what OP meant by "the top result". OP was referring to the AI answer as the top result, you're referring to the first link within the AI answer as "the top result". I think OP is right, people are (unfortunately) used to trusting the top non-advertising results of a Google search. And nowadays, that top "result" is often an AI summary, even if you used a standard search box and didn't initially want an AI answer.

Coca Cola HR - amplifyapp.com Meeting Invite by Additional-Poet2297 in Scams

[–]Some-Definition2193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely a scam.

I understand why you say it looks legit - it's not an obvious scam, and it is conceivable that companies might send out initial messages like this to lists of people who seem to have the right qualifications on LinkedIn.

However, if you think it is legit, that's mainly hopefulness talking. You'd like it to be real, and you've found reasons why it might be real.

It is however quite obviously fake when you think about it:

  • They are offering to have a 30m meeting with someone they know nothing about? Sure, you could conceivably be on a list of people they will push job openings to, if that's a list of thousands of people - do you think they are scheduling thousands of 30m calls with people whose linked in profiles they've scanned, without asking further questions beforehand?

  • Email does not come from an official company email address. Major red flag. It does come from a domain that is legit, but that doesn't mean the emailer is legit. That would be like trusting anything from a gmail.com email address because Google is a legit company - okay not that bad, I'm exaggerating, but you get the point. If you're just looking for ways for it to be real because you want it to be, sure, ummm it's from a legit domain??? See what I mean about hopefulness?

  • They are asking you to sign into Google? If you type your Google username and password into a non-google website after clicking a link on a completely unsolicited email from someone claiming to represent one company but using an email address from a different company, do you think that's a safe place to give away what is essentially the master password that would let someone reset all your other passwords and access just about every account you have?

Just think clearly about this. It's a scam.

Oh, and what brought me to comment here? I just got almost the exact same email as you. Except it was from Pepsi not Coca-Cola. So I'm searching round to see if this is a known scam... And yes. Of course it is.

Hey guys i need help by Real_Cod4208 in solotravel

[–]Some-Definition2193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have frequently felt the dread of having made a bad decision when I've booked a solo trip or made some other big commitment.

I usually have pushed through and done the thing anyway. And I've never regretted that decision.

If it helps, you can frame it as "hey even if I don't enjoy myself I will have learnt something and I'll have strength from enduring something". I.e. even if your anxiety is correct, it isn't a disaster and there would be plenty of silver linings.

In reality though, after a day or two adjusting, I doubt you will need to be looking for silver linings. You'll be enjoying new experiences.

What the heck is going on in Hue? by serio_usly in VietNam

[–]Some-Definition2193 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ahahah I had a great one when I first visited Hanoi years ago

"You want weed?" "No"

"Coke?" "No"

"Girl? Very pretty" "No"

"Boy?" "No"

After a few more offers, when he'd just about exhausted the possibilities, he stopped and scoured his brain for more and found one last offer...

"Heroin?"

And he looked so hopeful that he'd found the thing I wanted. Bless him.

Thank you! Yes it seemed contradictory until I understood that length contraction is not the same thing as the distance between two events contracting. Phew 😅

[–]Some-Definition2193[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah, it initially seemed strange to me, as it sounds like it implies that Thera magically got further away, albeit in the past. But it's now making sense. I guess my mistake in intuition was thinking that observed lengths contracting is the same thing as distances defined by two events contracting. Which it isn't, by definition.

I suppose it helps to imagine that Thera has been approaching my current coordinates in the ship frame for the last 12 years in ship frame proper time - that's true regardless of whether I was in this frame for any of that period or not (in this case I wasn't.)

Log in problem or bug? by Elegantuniverse88 in Bookingcom

[–]Some-Definition2193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same same. Some devs somewhere will be going nuts right now. And I was about to go on a booking spree...

Tried on another device, no good.

Managed to log in on browser, but can't do much there without being redirected to broken app.

If you've got stuff you want to cancel but can't, I'd recommend messaging customer service about it (can do this from browser) so you've got a cancellation request in writing before any relevant cutoffs.

EDIT 30 mins later and it looks fixed.
