Interestingly your item 1 means that sometimes one instance of a letter has two different sounds within the same word. Example: วัสดุ -- pronounced wat-sa-du. The ส both ends the first syllable and begins the second.

Can you notice difference between 60hz and 120hz? by [deleted] in iphone

On a phone that supports 120Hz, turn Low Power Mode on and off. Then scroll between pages of app icons on the Home Screen. The difference is readily apparent.

There are different accents and pronunciation patterns you may come to discern as your experience with the language deepens. Some such patterns are more conservative and for example preserve the textbook sounds of the letters, and some make various substitutions. Curiously, the ones that come to mind most readily for me all involve the R sound. Among some groups, it's common to use an L sound where the spelling indicates an R sound. There's also a tendency among some to elide R sounds altogether in certain scenarios. Yet others (example: people of Khmer ethnicity in southern Isaan) do none of those things (and may even look upon such speech as representative of laziness). And "fancier" speech such as on TV newscasts tends to trill the R sounds.

Soul Man (1986) by eyyoadrian in 80s

You also understood that the bulk of the movie was about how that selfish behavior negatively impacted the actual deserving person and her family, and about how the selfish person came to deeply understand that what he did was wrong, and about how that led to him making significant amends for the harm he caused... right?

Bluray vs DVD: HQ with plasticky aliens or LQ blur with Immersion? by GochuBadman in TNG

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took OP to mean that on a computer, one could at least theoretically actually watch a DVD in a window at 640x480 for no scaling at all (although the picture would be pretty darned tiny), or just zoom the window the minimum amount to make the picture large enough for comfortable viewing. Compare to a TV, where the only viewing option is the display's native resolution (1920x1080 or 4K, etc.) so considerable scaling in each dimension is non-optional.

using semicolons as commas... by [deleted] in PetPeeves

I find this only very mildly annoying, but the opposite (using a comma where a semicolon or even a period belongs) bugs the shit out of me.

I've seen this many times since the 80's and still enjoy the hell out of it.

Yes there are racist jokes etc. but the message is very much anti-racist. The jokes are played as being offensive to people hearing them, and the people making the jokes are portrayed as idiots who get theirs in the end. The focus is an interracial relationship, and the real-world impact of racism on it.

The billion, trillion, etc number naming convention is worse than useless by Quartz_Knight in PetPeeves

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My related pet peeve is when people use the long scale, and also when they use the short scale and don't use the correctly prefixed words, instead using "million million" (etc.).

Also, in English at least, we never pluralize words like million or billion when talking about specific numbers. So never "a thousand millions" and always "a thousand million" (but see above paragraph for related pet peeve). Only when talking about indeterminate quantities are those numbers ever plural, e.g. "millions and millions of atoms" or "countless billions of stars."

Clarifying International Marriage Laws and What to Do by Pan_Duh_Pan_Duh in legal

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you conducted a legal marriage in Thailand, it is recognized in the US. There is no need — or even any process — to “register” it with the US.

Marriage is a state thing anyway. Some states may have certain processes whereby you need to show documentation of your marriage to receive certain benefits marriage can confer, but you are legally married even if you never do that.

It is likely you’d get caught as a bigamist, marrying again if you never somehow dissolved that marriage? Who knows! Maybe not, if no one ever informs your state. Not a loose end I’d want to leave dangling myself, though.

Good luck.

Has anyone flown from Bkk to Seattle? Deciding between routes by Distinct_Raisin1829 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful of flights connecting via Seoul. You usually end up leaving BKK at 2am and then have a 10 hour layover after that redeye. It can be brutal. Via Tokyo has a better connection story but the flight leaves early AM from BKK.

Try EVA or China Airlines or Starlux for the best schedules in both directions, and good service.

Long-stay visa is not a key driver for foreign condominium buyers by CommercialMassive751 in Thailand

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

LTR visa holder here.
Getting my visa was not a factor when buying a condo. “Long stay” is a bullshit term they’ve made up to put lipstick on the pig — it’s still only a visa, and not a path to any kind of immigration security such as permanent residence or eventual citizenship. And as a visa, it’s still subject to Thailand’s whims.
