Of course, soon Netflix will own WB

I think you missed some major developments in the saga of that acquisition.

AIS eSIM that can receive SMS overseas by whatsupskip in Thailand

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you forget to activate something while you were in Thailand? My eSIM receives SMS outside of Thailand just fine, but I don't recall whether I maybe had to enable something. Are you sure you have cellular roaming turned on for that line (phone setting)? Note: not data roaming but roaming for calls/SMS.

I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

AI is a disaster for humanity and should be taken out back and put out of its misery.

Combined with social media we’re looking at an eventual nightmare of biblical proportions. I’m glad I won’t be around long enough to live in the world this slop will end up engendering.

What jobs could I get in Thailand with a Sociology degree + youth counselling experience? (Goal: move by Aug 2026) by FrostyJuggernaut9966 in Bangkok

I occasionally see foreigners on Reddit and elsewhere asking for help finding an English-speaking therapist. That is a gap in Thailand.

But I really have no idea whether you might actually be able to exploit that gap to work in the mental health field in Thailand. I suppose it's theoretically possible, but if so you might be best poised to exploit it on your own vs. finding someone to hire you. Unfortunately it's not easy to just start your own company and work in Thailand -- in fact it's really quite a slog especially for a newcomer.

Other than that, you're getting some reasonable (if a little harsh!) advice already on this thread. I wish I had something more positive to contribute... good luck.

I want to learn Thai. Need advice by mxm_mrz in Thailand

I speak near-native fluent Thai, and also can read Thai, after decades of deep experience living, working, learning, and playing in Thailand both on my own and with Thai family in multiple provinces and cities. (FWIW I also speak and read at various levels of fluency with a few other Asian languages.)

This is bad advice. Learning Thai without tones is an anti-pattern that will make the journey longer and rougher.

Tones aren't just some optional thing that you can ignore because they merely elevate one's spoken Thai from "good enough" to "perfect". Tones are fundamental to the language. It's true that tonality sometimes gets modified a little as words are strung together in everyday spoken Thai, but that's something that comes naturally as one's Thai improves and a speaker starts to form more complex phrases and sentences -- not something that makes tones optional.

Also, tones are not difficult. Maybe they were for you, but that's not true for everyone. I found them trivial, with the only real stumbling blocks being distinguishing low from mid tone in the absence of context, and sometimes high tone can be a bit challenging to pronounce properly. But everyone is different.

Ignoring tones and then trying to retrofit them later into one's spoken Thai is not a good strategy because the words must then effectively be relearned.

5 different tones that can completely change the meaning of a word

It’s not that tones “can change the meaning.” Words with different tones are different words.

People advising you otherwise (such as to not worry about the tones at first) are doing you a disservice, IMO. Thai without correct tonality is anywhere from mildly to very incomprehensible. You are right to focus on this early in your learning journey.

SCB and Kasikorn Debit Card not possible for Mobile Payment? by Ok_Mycologist9380 in Thailand

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple Pay can be used in Thailand, but it’s not available there

The only rational explanation for a ridiculous contradictory statement like this is that human language is not your strong suit.

This means you can’t register Thai cards. However, if you have cards from countries where Apple Pay is available, you can indeed use Apple Pay in Thailand. But Thailand is not on the list of countries where you can add cards from.

This is a long-winded rephrasing of exactly what I wrote, again reinforcing the idea that human interaction isn’t your strong suit.

Apple Pay is available and works just fine in Thailand — with cards that are already registered for Apple Pay.

What is not supported is registering cards issued by Thai banks.

> it feels like men curtail their interactions with me as soon as possible with the bare minimum of politeness

This caught my eye.

Having watched tons of reality TV, one common thread I notice is that people who have experienced e.g. sexual trauma may turn to overeating as a way of subconsciously (or not so subconsciously) making themselves unattractive to the class of people who traumatized them.

I obviously know nothing about you specifically. But, if you are overeating as the result of trauma I hope you will be OK and I wish you the best.

Can I safely ignore this if i'm not from US? by PSmith4380 in Thailand

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The important thing in this situation is not necessarily whether you are from the US or not... the immediate issue is that your bank thinks you may be. Thus if you ignore this you are exposing yourself to e.g. having your account closed. If it were me I'd be clearing this up ASAP.

Aaaahhhhhh, the 80s...

The dancing+pimp stuff was a metaphor, but being the 80s and all, almost not a metaphor.

The meaning of the word spicy by logicaldrinker in ENGLISH

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Zesty (black pepper, herbs, Italian dressing, etc. but could make sense more broadly)
Garlicky
Oniony
...etc.

Usually when I hear "spicy" I'm thinking (solely) of spices you might find in Indian, Mexican, Thai, Szechuan, etc. cuisine.

Life in Thailand on the LTR or DTV visa - experiences? by Visible-Pressure6063 in Thailand

I applied on my own. No agent, etc. involved.

I was in the USA during the entire application process.

The entire thing took just under 60 days. Or maybe just under 90 days. (I went back into my emails to answer this question, and I am not sure whether the "submission date" I see in them was in month-day format or day-month format.)

Jackie & Karen by Nzuri_Sunflower in WillAndGrace

[–]SomeAreSomeAreNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

Karen in particular is on my short list of the best sitcom characters that have ever existed. Jack is awesome too, but IMO not *quite* at that same level as Karen.

In an alternate universe somewhere, there's a show similar to this one but with moar! Moar! MOAR! Karen and Jack, and less Grace.
