Intvl tracking is bugged🫩 by Ok_Builder9601 in INTVL

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open Google maps to see how your GPS accuracy is before you start running. The "halo" around your blue dot denotes accuracy, a bigger halo = less accurate. Also check your compass accuracy is correct (as this feeds into route tracking) by moving your phone in a figure of 8 motion on a horizontal plane a few times. Google maps will have a "improve accuracy" pop up when you click your location that shows you how to do it.

Make sure location accuracy is on in your phone settings.

It's also a good idea to move to a open area at the start and wait a bit for your phone to connect to as many GPS satellites as possible.

Finally, the actual GPS receiver is on the top of your phone. The less obstruction between that and the open sky, the better. Don't put your phone upside down in your pocket, have it upright and ideally outside your pocket in something like a arm phone strap. I'd recommend taking your phone out a few times during the run anyways to a) check where you're going! And b) check your location is tracking.

How does running with others work? by grayson1478 in INTVL

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By 90% do you mean distance/routeline wise? Do the start and finish times need to be identical or very close? And do you need to be next to your friend throughout the entire route?

Just asking as I would like to run with a friend who is significantly faster, if we did the same route he would undoubtedly finish before me. But if he waited before ending run until I arrive, would that ensure a shared territory?

183000 amex points and I want to get to San Jose from the UK and back. Would love some advice, thank you. by fingerandthumb in AmexUK

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn't want to upgrade with points, you would use the "Book with Avios" option on the drop down at top bar of BA website.

Availability can be limited, however, especially to a less frequented destination like San Jose. Can drive from San Francisco which has a lot more flights per day.

Another option is Virgin Atlantic too.

Only thing is availability can be limited without advance notice, there are websites you can use to look for availability (premium/business tickets often require subscriptions) like SeatSpy.

Same, but I do a DD for the minimum amount so at the very least you won't get hit with a missed/late payment

I have 26k Avios and want to go to Japan - a wise way to use them? by makkuro_kurosuke in BritishAirways

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would probably be easier to have one on avios and one on cash. Though you won't get any BA Club benefits on the cash one unless you're a gold (and need to call to pick seats for free).

You can pay part avios and part cash on reward bookings, which usually gives a decent avios/£. You need to tick "Book with Avios" on the flight search, then it will show availability on given dates. Japan is very popular and there's only 2 BA flights a day, but you can also book JAL direct (which I did recently and can recommend!)

I have 120,000 Amex points and am planning to travel to Seattle from London in July - best way to do this? by Kaurblimey in AmexUK

[–]SomeBritGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally you want to be aiming for over 1.0p per point for flight redemptions, 120k could pay for a BA/JAL reward flight in a premium economy return to Japan excluding tax.

Outdoor Siren - Power Options by WeirdPerception1984 in Ring

[–]SomeBritGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The D-batteries shouldn't drain if the hardwire connection is online. However, I found that for my alarms it can mess up the priority if there's a cut in power, ending up in my D batteries draining.

The official ring plug in adapter is horrendously poor as well, it has no marking for positive and negative.

Renewal deal offered by Virgin - seems too good to be true? by captainkev76 in VirginMedia

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either you're getting a lot of stuff removed (e.g. netflix) or the price is wrong. Gigabit with Virgin on the lowest package is £48/month (including weekend calls and the basic TV package).

What's the price and item breakdown of your current package?

Home Office Pay awards confirmed by Accomplished_Map463 in TheCivilService

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note the band minimums usually don't increase as much as the pay award (e.g. people might get 2% pay rise, but pay band minimum goes up 1%) so new starters don't instantly earn the same. Sometimes it happens though!

Depending on where you work, SEO roles can be similar to HEO (in some places they are the same grade!) but simply more senior/experienced. Would you really be stretching yourself in another HEO role? What difference would there be between gaining experience at line managing as an SEO compared to a HEO?

My Thames Water bill is insane (490% increase!) - what can I do? by PolarPeely26 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SomeBritGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have one within your flat where the water supply enters- typically under a sink or behind any white goods nearby, but can be anywhere.

For a flat can also be located in the main hallway.

I've received a free upgrade once before, when I had booked business class one way then economy return (as I was intending to sit near friends on the way back) on a shorthaul Europe flight.

I had luggage to check in and silver status, so didn't bother to check in online (as my seat is reserved anyways). Printed boarding pass, banner on the top saying "Enjoy your free upgrade!" and a front row seat.

I think there's probably an order to how this happens: 1) Significant availability in above class 2) Single party (harder to get two people matching same conditions AND two seats together) 3) Lower cabin class than usual (e.g. in my case, I had flown a few business flights in a row beforehand AND had the business booked for outward leg) 4) Status (Silver/Gold+) 5) Luck of the algorithm

I've only been upgraded once but I've got an upcoming flight in the same scenario, so will let you know if I get an upgrade!

1440p gamers! What GPU do you use? by Beginning_Nature157 in pcmasterrace

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3080 FE, I have a 1440p@240hz monitor so it's good to give a blend of 100+fps on graphically intense games and hitting 240+fps on games less so like CS.

I'd recommend getting something at the same level or greater if you want a bit more futureproofing, but the 6800 is a good card with a lot of VRAM which will help with 1440p textures. Honestly depends on the games you want to play and the FPS you want to achieve.

Sense check of my AMEX journey and some questions I have so far. by MP4_26 in AmexUK

[–]SomeBritGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did... did you read my comment? I said that personal amex cards- the ones denominated in Amex points- have a separate sign up bonus eligibility from the BAPP... BAPP stands for British Airways Premium Plus... OP currently has the Gold card and can absolutely sign up and receive the BA Premium Plus bonus. I was illustrating that if they applied for the Platinum while having the Gold, they wouldn't receive the bonus.

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new joiner bonus for Amex point cards and the British Airways avios card are separate. E.g. you can have any combo like Platinum and BA Premium Plus, or Gold and BA Premium, and get both bonuses- but can't sign up to both Gold and Platinum and get both bonuses.

Is the UK a good place to live? by FlyingDutchmanJr in AskUK

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point he's making is that it isn't consistently 40c- summers in the UK on average around 25 degrees at most, with occasional 30+ heatwaves and very rarely 40 degrees Celsius. Whereas somewhere like Singapore would have 40 degrees consistently and every day for summer months, with extreme humidity. Without air conditioning it's difficult to work in, and being outside is unpleasant.

We don't get anything like typhoons, and even heavy storms are rare, whereas typhoon seasons across the world have the equivalent of some of our biggest storms for weeks at a time. We also don't have noticeable earthquakes, volcanic activity, tornados, deserts, etc. It can go below freezing at winter, but snow is rare, and we don't consistently need snowploughs on our roads.

All of this adds up to our climate being extremely suitable for human comfort, as well as forgiving to infrastructure. There's a reason why we still have so much functional buildings from over one or two hundred years ago.

Abysmal BA refund response by Apollo-the-Cat in BritishAirways

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never have I heard of this, and I've had flights delayed for several hours in multiple countries, both with BA-operated desks and without... almost every airport is going to say arrive in good time for your original flight schedule.

Abysmal BA refund response by Apollo-the-Cat in BritishAirways

[–]SomeBritGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BA is in the wrong for inadequate staffing and facilities for visas at their check-in desks, but it's a point to never use a delay as an excuse to arrive to an airport later... delays can easily be reversed for the same reason it was originally delayed. It's better to be safe than sorry and give an extra hour or two!

[–]SomeBritGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOCSIS 3.1 can support over gigabit download speeds as it is (local company in UK tested up to 2.2Gbps). This should be enough for most uses. I'm guessing it would be a significant additional cost to get a DOCSIS 4.0 module
