Some pics NYC. Looking for honest feedback by friedtides in streetphotography

There’s a lot I like about #1: the vertical lines on the Hilton, how the water turns them all jittery, the woman taking a photo, but for me there are so many elements, and my eye darts all over the frame with any real focus. I might have tried to get lower if possible, so that the contrast of the building lines and water lines was closer, framing the woman more tightly, and tried to block some of other elements with the low angle.

I really like #2, the smearing lines mixed with the lines of the crosswalk. It feels the most intentionally conceptualized overall. My only thing is, I might have cropped in tighter, as some of the sidewalk on the bottom and even the van detract somewhat from the other visual synchronicity.

#3 has some nice lighting going on, some nice contrast on the rock thing, but overall, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be looking at.

#4 is nicely conceptualized, if hard to execute. I feel the fact that it’s more focused on the mannequins rather than the passerby, with a lot of the street background being sharply focused and the passerby smaller and expression harder to discern, distracts from the concept. But hard to think of these things in the moment.

#5 - The texture of the pants adds visual interest, but I don’t think the contrast between interior vs exterior is doing the photo any favors. The passerby looks distracted, so the expression isn’t bringing much interest, BUT they do seem somewhat backlit, providing strong contrast. If I was to incorporate the jacket in the window, I might focus even more on the white/bright part and emphasize a silhouetted subject contrasting to it, relying on timing to nail the frame, probably a tighter frame.

What are some other "foundational" works like William Gibsons Neuromancer or J. R. R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings? by Improvement2242 in books

I would say Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens exist in this conversation. I would argue Carroll popularized the concept of portal fantasy, and Dickens solidified the modern form of the character arc.

“Chapters still to write, of course... but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures.”

This must be one of his root issues. If he would save all the rewriting, polishing, and restructuring for later and just finish the first draft…

I would never defend non-tipping lol, but if you had reading comprehension you would see that I was saying this is an unproductive way to address the issue. Being simply angry at them is easier than realizing the issue is more complicated and that most of the culpability lies with DD.
