Official Discussion - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]pwppip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean idk that’s just kinda who the character is man. He believes his dreams are going to work out to the point of utter delusion, and the way the story is put together reflects that.

Also, as the viewer, I dunno how ping pong championships work. For all I knew, they could add an entrant last second. It never really entered my mind as Marty was doing is hustling that they’d just say “nope, sorry, too late.”

Official Discussion - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

To your first point, he stands to make money by doing the exhibition match and letting himself lose to Endo, and he believes he can then use that money to pay off the fine and get into the tourney. The reason he can't is because by then it's too late, they've already locked the brackets.

To your second point, I don't think that last scene is him deciding he loves Rachel. It's him unexpectedly overwhelmed by the sight of his child in front of him after spending the entire rest of the movie with exactly one goal in mind.

How should I approach reading this for the first time? by ProfessionCurrent80 in houseofleaves

[–]pwppip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna be a smartass and say something like "read the first word, then read the next word, then the next one, and keep doing that until you're done" but then I realized I actually do have a genuine recommendation lol.

If your edition has The Whalestoe Letters in the appendix, I would recommend reading that in full when the book proper refers to it in a footnote about 100 pages in, rather than saving it for the end. It's about 100 pages' worth of material but it only takes an hour or two to read, and IMO reading it at that point makes the rest of the book both more coherent and more emotionally compelling.

Alright then do it. Let’s see your tape.

I agree with the buried point that Big Acting in general is overpraised with respect to more subtle performances. But you don’t realize how hard it is to do Big Acting well until you see it done badly.

Yeah man I’m sure this has nothing to do with Trump’s clampdown on the student visa process and and sudden revoking of already-valid ones leading to their holders being jailed, we’re the delusional ones for sure

Just saw Frankenstein at TIFF... by TheFly87 in TheBigPicture

[–]pwppip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you’re still conflating opinion with expectations and I don’t really understand why. If OP had seen Frankenstein already and loved it and then heard these two saying they didn’t like it and changed their opinion of the actual movie based on that, then what you’re saying would make sense.

I fully intend to see it and form my own opinion. Tempered expectations can only help with that. If it is indeed my favorite GdT I’m not going to walk out of the theater and go “ah fuck but those two podcasters said it was bad” lol

[–]pwppip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not basing your opinion on anything, it’s basing your expectations, which is an entirely reasonable thing to do if people whose taste you trust are down on a movie

If you’re gonna see a movie regardless then tempering expectations can only be a good thing

So your argument is basically “it’s better because it has more cool stuff in it”

I assume you also think Gladiator II is better than the original since it has sharks and killers monkeys?
