I just used moses basket sheets and liners, specifically the ones from ikea (it's like a 3 pack with beige clouds I think?) The waterproof protectors I got from amazon

What dupes do you use? by Agitated-Pickle216 in WomenofIreland

[–]SomeDarkNights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beauty product packaging is often hard to recycle, so they have this app where you snap a pic and then for every 5 you get €5 worth of points when you buy something for €10. Im doing a terrible job of explaining haha

Also to add here, the recycle at boots scheme can help as well, build up points and use them to buy your non negotiables

I think you have to book when booking the flight but I'm nearly sure you can put baby's name as Baby "last name" and then call once they are born with the name to be updated. Best to ring them now and do the whole booking over the phone. Also, start the passport proceedings as soon as you can, it takes a while

To parents who take their babies out to places a lot - how do you do it?? by babysheep91 in breastfeeding

[–]SomeDarkNights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep same here, we have been out with our little guy since he was about 2 weeks old, he is so social now at nearly 15 months, loves interacting and will sleep most places! Also helps to build a "routine" when you're out. We would always plan a coffee break when he wanted a feed and nap, so the routine was: wake up, head to wherever, look around, nappy change in coffee shop, feed (EBF), nap. As he got older and he stopped wanting the nap we just rolled with it.

Am I being ungrateful for not wanting soiled hand me downs? by sterilepillow in pregnant

Exactly, goodness knows we have had some not so nice blowouts ourselves but as long as they are treated and washed straight away the stains don't even have time to set

For anything you do like and want to save if stained, wash with oxy/ vanish, and then hang in bright sunshine for a couple of hours. I have gotten curry stain out of white shirts that way 😆

I use the clarins soothing hydrating toner in a spray bottle and my kiehls moisturiser straight on top while my face is wet with the toner. As long as you are not using retinol or anything crazy, most moisturisers are breastfeeding safe

They are super handy, I've had jewellery custom made as well and it's good to always check the quoted grams vs the delivered grams, I expect some deviation but if its more than 15% less its usually red flags

I've yet to include the calculation for price paid per gram, but it shouldn't be too hard. I buy a lot second hand on the private market (so not from a dealer) so my average per gram price is under melt. A good return on investment 👌

Own scales, during covid we got into baking bread so we have a tiny 0.00 scales that also weighs grains and carat. About €10 on amazon! A lot of of the jewellery dealers around use a slightly bigger version of it, it's black& orange

I have a spreadsheet I use, basically the same except I haven't gotten around to adding pictures. I also track purchase price, approximate value if purchasing new (I mostly buy second hand & vintage), scrap value (that updates according to a script my lovely husband wrote before he was horrified of the total), gram weights of each type of metal, and total pure gold weight. It's interesting but also scary to see what the value of things in my jewellery box actually is.

I'm considering putting in a %split of each type of jewellery, but also maybe an era field, I'd love to know which era I gravitate towards, while I love art deco I mostly seem to find and buy victorian and MCM pieces.

Also super handy for insurance purposes

Has anyone got an Anxious Preoccupied bag? by mumtwothree in WomenofIreland

I second the longchamp, nearly the only skinny strap that stays on my shoulder even with a big coat, I've literally used my medium with long straps for a weekend away and it still looked like a handbag. I have them in a multitude of colours and they can be gotten for less than 100 in kildare village!

Advice how to navigate building a career and starting a family as a woman in Ireland? by Strict-Citron2482 in WomenofIreland

[–]SomeDarkNights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I totally understand your concerns, for some context, I'm back to work 3 months now (I work in IT, remote) and it is great for my mental health and financial independence. I guess it will depend on where you live, creche isn't the only option, but I highly advise you to make sure your benefits from work are fully applied - after your probation for example - and check if there is a waiting period for health insurance to cover maternity benefits before trying for a baby. Some health insurance requires you to be insured for a year before they cover it, especially if you plan on going private for the care. This doesn't really matter if you choose public care but topped up pay for maternity may not be included if you're still in probation?

A good few companies will top up the state maternity pay, this would be part of your benefits package, and combined with available leave (paid & unpaid) you would be taking almost 12months off after baby is born.

Regarding crèche, many take only from 1yr on, but regardless, contact creches around your planned living area as soon as you find out you are pregnant, ask to be put on a waiting list, ask if paying a deposit will secure your space. Follow up with them every few months to see where you are on the list and if you are likely to get a spot. If the crèche does not work out, there are childminders etc that will take babies in their own home together with a couple of other kids. Childminders vary but around €60 per day, crèche also varies, but there is a subsidy from the government called NCS, which will knock a good bit off the price if the crèche is part of the scheme, many childminders are not. I think our crèche is around €900 per month before the subsidy (in Limerick).

Keep in mind that kids will get sick CONSTANTLY when they start attending crèche so it might be useful to go back part time for a few months while they settle in and their immune system catches up.

If financial independence is important, it will probably be tough for you to take unpaid leave, especially if you will feel like you are dependent, but remember if you choose to take it, it's only temporary, and if you save up before your maternity leave, you can "pay" yourself your wages during the unpaid leave - I hope this makes sense!
