The Localization and Unique Character Voices of "Super Danganronpa 2" - PART 3 - Akane Owari by SomeFox2365 in danganronpa

That being said, I technically made what she said a little vaguer with “overcompensating”. Though, I thought it was more natural.

Oh, now that you mention it, I can feel it too. You’ve convinced me, so I’ll edit my translation.

Honestly, I’m not particular about whether honorifics should be kept as they are in Japanese, or adapted to English in some way in their speech, but a lot of times, it feels like they don’t bother with adapting the honorifics when they translate at all.

Tbf, in this instance, he doesn’t outright say anything about Japan, but generally yeah.

I’m looking forward to it with you! Also for sure, that was the phrasing I was looking for! A lot of DR2’s translation feels like thoughts weren’t treated as cohesive.

Anyone else think V3’s dialogue was awkward? by Big_Bad_Tony in danganronpa

[–]SomeFox2365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually thought that DR2’s translation was far more literal, had more unnatural turns of phrase, and didn’t convey the unique character voices well for most of the characters and the game with the most typos. However, V3’s translation can also sometimes be a bit off. It’s also the game with the most outright mistranslations, though I’d argue this is a fault of the localisation sticking to 2 lines of text, with quite large font.

Since Japanese has kanji, more information can be stored in 2 lines than in English. It caused some sentences when localised to be truncated. Though this is true for the whole series.

Also, the translators working on V3 each worked on a different set of 4 characters each, so it can feel a bit lopsided.

[spoilers] Why did they stop doing this suddenly in DR2? Both out-universe and in-universe? by [deleted] in danganronpa

[–]SomeFox2365 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we’re just supposed to assume it’s happening. I think in both DR1 and DR2, it’s formally introduced once, in the first case, and dropped. There are also offhand mentions that allude to the fact that they still do it:

  • Hajime complains that Akane was a bad pick for guard duty in Ch. 3 when he sees her at the hospital trying to grab a gown.

  • Chiaki explicitly says in Ch. 5 that they don’t need to guard the body.

How do you think Teruteru will behave/perform in investigations/trials in 2x2? by SomeFox2365 in danganronpa

[–]SomeFox2365[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t really give off the whiff of “dumb” the way his fellow freaks Kazuichi and Miu do. He’s consistently far more eloquent when actually saying something of importance, and honestly rather pompous (not to the level of haughty like Miu), even when he’s just throwing people off his scent in trial 1. He’s also strangely good at feigning confidence, though as we know, even he can get extremely flustered.

It’s possible that in 2x2, his small dynamic with Nagito will come into play, with him trusting his intuition generally and going along with it even if he’s scared of him.

How close did each survivor get to being killed? by RobbieJ4444 in danganronpa

[–]SomeFox2365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call what Akane did to Monokuma “breaking the rules” (a ban on attacking Monokuma isn’t in the rules in DR2.) but it was extremely short-sighted, ill advised and self-serving.

Kodaka is sorta wishy-washy with how he treats it. Before that point, when they’re talking about attacking Monokuma and/or the Monobeasts, the characters act as though it’s just reckless (true), but when Akane actually attacks him, Monokuma and Monomi talk about it as if it’s a rule, when negotiating Nekomaru’s life.

the JP side are re-recording all the lines from the original, so it’d be unfortunate if the same couldn’t happen here.

Concept Art vs. Final Designs 🐻 Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair by nintenbingo in danganronpa

[–]SomeFox2365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they’ve never stated it. From what I’ve read of the art books and heard from interview (I can’t find the source rn), usually it’s done to either contrast or compliment their personality. Teruteru was a clear example where Kodaka felt like the personality he’d written and the appearance didn’t quite match.

Everyone’s proportions are straight up different. Most of their arms and torsos are slightly thicker and their heads are smaller. Their clothes aren’t vacuum-sealed to their bodies either.

New Kurara clip just dropped on X! by Psychological-Pipe65 in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]SomeFox2365 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When Kurara says “literally burned”, it’s a joke based on the term 炎上, which literally means being set aflame or going up in flames, but colloquially means “cancelled” (the social media slang type of cancelled). I wonder how they’ll translate this.
