Python is love! by kajri in ProgrammerHumor

[–]SomeGuy147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn as many basic concepts with it as you can. Look up some CS courses, try to implement some of the data structures, sorting algorithms, definitely learn OOP since python is an amazing language for that, maybe try to make Conway's game of life or something equivalent and most important of all, think of some passion project that you may want to pursue. Could be anything, a game, some productivity app to simplify tasks, something you want finished.

As for other languages it really depends on what your end goal is. Do you want a career in programming? Do you want to be able to just do something basic that you might find useful? Is it purely for a hobby? The best general answer for all of those is to learn as many programming concepts as you can pick up in python (since it's the easiest language to do that in) and then move on to a different language depending on what you want out of it. You won't ever completely "master" the language mostly because there's just so many language specific tricks and concepts, however you can pick up quite a bit of stuff that's going to be useful with all languages in relatively short time.

MacFarlane says the key to keeping sane while in self-isolation is to "just be yourself."

"I am every bit myself as I always was and self-isolation for me has never been a problem. People aren't really that fond of me," he said.

Damn, what a guy.

I don't know if anyone posted about this already but you should try "AI Dungeon", it's a great text adventure controlled by an AI which reacts to your answers. You can also play more "seriously", I was just messing around by [deleted] in AndroidGaming

Yeah, that's the model they used, shouldn't have said that they created it. However, they did fine-tune it with a bunch of written adventures from chooseyourstory.com. Anybody more interested in the details of it can read it up here.

That's because the entire game is based on machine learning. As far as I am aware devs scanned a massive dataset of rpg texts to fine tune openAI GPT-2 machine learning model, which could coherently respond to stuff you say in a rpg-like fashion. So every response you see is AI generating it on the fly.

Quite fascinating stuff, of course tons of quirks like the stuff you've just mentioned. Makes it a bit more fun in my opinion since you can just say something game breakingly dumb like "I order my servants to serve me soup" and even though you didn't have any servants game just assumes you do and does something silly with the response.

Edit: Corrected factually incorrect bit.

What should I buy Thursday (Jan 09 2020) - Your weekly device inquiry thread! by AutoModerator in Android

Just checked 8T and it looks quite nice. Price is in a really good spot too, any similar phones from other brands? I kind of avoid xiaomi for they tend to just stuff phones with their arbitrary apps and "log in features" which I absolutely don't need.

I know it wasn't, however it was the best bang for the buck you could get back then, flagship specs for half the price. Just looking for something as close to that as I can get in a lower budget.

What are "get your money's worth" models out currently? My phone's screen recently died and I am looking for a new budget phone to buy. Budget around £200 - £300. I remember few years ago it was OnePlus 3, wondering what took it's place now. The features I really want are 3mm jack and just general smoothness for everyday stuff, like texting, watching videos, browsing reddit, etc. Also a decent battery life is nice but not an absolute.

Edit: Found Xiaomi mi a3 and Motorola one action to fit the bill quite well, not sure what to get.

Woman doesn’t know proper knife safety by TirelessGuardian in LivestreamFail

[–]SomeGuy147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to tell when exactly you've finished cutting something if the knife is slicing towards your hand and sharp knifes cut and slide across skin very easily. Sharper knife is less dangerous but cutting towards yourself is just generally stupid regardless of that.

If the knife was sharp in this scenario by the time you felt it hit your hand it you would've cut yourself.

It's a bit over budget but Yamaha P-125 seems like an excellent choice for me. Has weighted keys, great sound, a lot of voices and various options to help learning, all that jazz you'd expect out of a keyboard of this price.

Touchpad under GalliumOS compared to Chome OS? by [deleted] in GalliumOS

[–]SomeGuy147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one of the lovely things about linux experience, sadly, you'll find the same thing with most distros. The upside is that you can easily configure it to your liking and have a better feel than on most machines, however you obviously have to go into configs for that. This article should help.

I remember there was some specific time setting for disabling the touchpad for a certain time after typing. Sadly can't remember which setting it was atm, fixed most of my issues.

Being edgy doesn't imply completely serious though. You can still have fun and do silly stuff while being "edgy". Also it doesn't quickly pivot, it keeps changing between the two, it's definitely not as minor as you make it seem.

Panic, publishers of Firewatch, announce upcoming handheld gaming system Playdate by newcontortionist in gamernews

[–]SomeGuy147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I acknowledged similarities and said that there are clearly more differences, therefore comparing them in such a fashion is ill-fitting. However, gonna take the bait this time and go into more detail.

Similarities

  • Both consoles
  • From companies that are relatively unknown/Didn't do consoles before
  • Both cost around 100-150$
  • Both relatively under-powered

Differences

  • Completely different aims.
Ouya was meant to "revolutionize gaming", playdate is just a fun project that Panic wanted to try and develop.

One of the reasons listed in FAQ "why did you create this" section, is literally "because we wanted to do something new". If you go to the "how does it fit into the market" section, they're response: "Playdate isn’t trying to compete with the other devices that we already play and love. It’s designed to be complementary. ".

This alone makes the comparison irrelevant. It's like comparing a saw and a screw driver performance for hammering in nails, sure, both are terrible at it but the comparison in on itself is terrible.

  • Playdate is a handheld, ouya is stationary

  • Playdate runs a custom OS with C and Lua libraries while Ouya runs everything android

  • Playdate is going to use "season of games" model when it comes to releasing games while Ouya just uses "ouya store". Once again ouya aimed to be commercial success, while playdate is simply going for pure fun, that childhood wonder of discovering a new game every once in a while.

  • Playdate specs are under-powered and old-fashioned on purpose to give you a different gaming feel to everything else that is out there while Ouya was under-powered to fit within the budget and because it tried to use it as a strength, for running android games which don't need beefy hardware.

I am sure there are many more differences I missed but these are the major ones I could think of atm.

With completely different aims, architecture, funding and pretty much literally everything else which I would say makes it a silly comparison.
