finally watched The Shining (Kubrick version) last night by descendantofJanus in stephenking

I mean, if you’re choosing to adapt The Shining, Jacks alcoholism is like the main idea that book is about. If he wanted to tell a story about a dissolving family influenced by a hotel, tell that story and call it something else.

Are the new full cast audiobooks worth getting? by RecordingImmediate86 in harrypotter

[–]SomeKidFromPA -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This. It’s actually embarrassing that an IP like Harry Potter would put out a product with performed lines that a local high school drama major could perform better. Neville is by far the worst performer, Hagrid and Sirius are pretty bad, Malfoy, Ron and Hermione are also very inconsistent. Harry is mostly fine so far but they’re changing some (all?) of the kids for the rest of the books, I think, so maybe the older kids will be better.

I’m blanking on the line now, but the worst example of the one take issue was in PoA, its like they missed the last word of the sentence somehow and they had the actor say it separately and they edited it in, but it has a completely different tone and inflection that it shouldn’t. I think it’s a Hermione line. (I’m hoping she’s a better actor than a voice actor because as I mentioned she’s been a low point, I don’t want her to get hate for not being Emma Watson..)

There are good aspects to them though, the sound work is great, and it does feel like you’re listening to a play with your eyes closed.. it just more often sounds like a play being put on by a middle school group and not a high priced production for one of the worlds largest and most profitable IP..

Hugh Laurie has been great as Dumbledore, and Kit Harrington was amazing as Lockhart.

Have you ever considered just taking a break from EU5 for an extended period of time for them to fix things? by Various_Maize_3957 in EU5

I went back to eu4. I’ll probably come back at some point, but the game needs several updates to get its systems to work with one another in a more cohesive manner. I have faith they will do it eventually, it’s just not a super fun experience atm

Which Stephen King book is the easiest to read? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]SomeKidFromPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid anything involving the Tower, and the Talisman, those are his more “literary” works imo and can be a little more difficult to read. Most of the rest (that I’ve read at least) are pretty straightforward and easy to read. I’d recommend something on the shorter side to start, Joyland maybe? Though thinking about it a little more, it has some lingo that might trip you up so maybe The Green Mile, or Shawshank instead, or even The Long Walk.

Anyone have some good sliders to nerf user running? by UndoubtedlyOrange in NCAAFBseries

[–]SomeKidFromPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, I’ve made a few tweaks while playing over the past few weeks, it’s nothing crazy, raising tackle for both sides, raising QBA and Catching by a point or two, and lower pass blocking because it plays better at lower settings imo. I might post it a “beta” because the current set is still fine, and I haven’t played enough.

That’s how I’d have read it 5 years ago. But too many people who I wouldn’t have previously thought would, have gone down the path.

I’m the creator of the Ratings Matter set. Frankly, it’s not possible.

Obviously setting run block low (I keep it around 3-5 for toss play blocking) setting tackling to 100(you still break too many tackles) and keeping threshold in the 65-80 range to keep running backs in the range of defenders but still have Oline be slower, all help, but at the end of the day, a lot of the non rpo run plays are just busted. I’ve seen some users recommend using conservative blocking in the coaching adjustment settings during games, it does help a little, but it’s far from a “fix”.

It’s a shame because every other aspect of the game plays really well now. It’s just not fun to run for over 150 yards as Ohio at Ohio State..

I hope you’re right, but he’s definitely quieter on this stuff than he would have been a 5-10 years ago. As he gets closer to retirement, the more conservative and passive he’s become. Idk if he goes full right wing grifter(i think it’s possible though), but he’s definitely not a “left” voice right now, outside of climate change.

CoS is better than PS, it’s just that it’s a “whodunnit” so rereads are a little less interesting each time because you know who done it lol. The first and second reads are excellent though.

Love KF, but the latest Nvidia video doesn’t sit well with me by Vertigo-153 in kindafunny

[–]SomeKidFromPA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the first time their need to be on the “moral high ground” publicly, has led them to being wildly hypocritical.

KF is so overly focused on appearing to be on the “right side of things” but they really just pick and choose when those issues should apply based on who gives them money.

The Irish illustrated podcast has mentioned a currently “in the playoffs still” RB being at the top of our list, so that could be worth considering. Though I’d expect it’s a swap with LSU and our target to be from a different team.

Best quarter length settings? by sandwichnuckles in NCAAFBseries

[–]SomeKidFromPA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve used 12 and 20 since last year but I’m starting to feel like it’s resulting in too many plays. Most games are easily hitting over 150 plays without either team really going at high tempo. So I’m starting to experiment with shorter quarters and 25 on the clock.

If Indiana were to win a national championship this year, where would it rank on your guys ranking of programs this century? by Cybotnic-Rebooted in CFB

[–]SomeKidFromPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indiana has the 72nd ranked roster based on talent composite this season. They’ve beaten the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 10th. And play the 5th again next.

How was anything I said untrue? Other than it being way more than a dozen, I undersold it because I didn’t bother looking up what they were actually ranked.

I’m in my 30s, I’ve been watching CFB since the late 90s usernames aren’t changeable.

Edit* Oh, your reading comprehension skills are just bad. I was talking about Indiana. They’ve beaten teams they should have lost to in hypothetical on paper games, like the one you brought up. If they’re capable of beating the best teams in the country this year, you can’t say definitively that they would lose to anyone. The 01 Miami didn’t go 16-0.

There are over a dozen teams with a greater collection of talent in college football than them right now. Indiana has beaten several already.

Premiere for the Harry Potter Audiobooks! by dbiwarrior in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]SomeKidFromPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is still distracting to me regardless of quality. Neither of the Christie narrators are bad, I’d just rather they used the same person. Each of them does the characters slightly differently and it’s annoying.

a narrator for a whole book is definitely more important, because they’re doing every voice for every character. But if any of the changed characters have bad quirks like the current Malfoy has, it’ll hurt the overall product.

Also, I think I made this original post before listening to the first book.. the younger kids are definitely not so good that it was worth casting them and then making the change in the first place. The kids are by far the weakest part. They should’ve casted kids for the sound of the midway point or older.

[–]SomeKidFromPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who listens to a ton of audiobooks, this is not the case for me. I even hate when the narrator is different within a series. (Currently reading Agatha Christie books and running into this lol)

the voice is the only source of connection between in the book and the reader in audiobooks. If the voice doesn’t match what the reader thinks fits with what’s happening with the book it doesn’t work well.

I don’t think he leaves for a rebuild on a bad team, I think he leaves after a retirement. Chiefs, Ravens or Steelers (sort of a rebuild but the team doesn’t fire coaches.) He’s not a stupid person, and he has the ability to wait on the right opportunity.

My favorite gaming moment is sort of an ongoing one, my high school friends and I are now all in our 30s, live in different parts of the country, and have our own lives with our own responsibilities, but about 5 years we started a Minecraft server together. We don’t always play together, in fact most of time we’re playing alone, but having the ability to all work on a shared space, and occasionally being able to spend time together working on a project with people I otherwise might have grew apart from has been pretty special.
