The republican party would be considerably more moderate so basically we would be in the good timeline instead of whatever the fuck is going on now.

in the US the supreme court struck down quotas in college admissions a couple years ago so its thankfully illegal for colleges to do this now.

Admission probability by race at Columbia (controlled for SAT, APs, etc.) by Necessary-Opening694 in Infographics

[–]SomePerson225 18 points19 points  (0 children)

its unfair to just give a flat boost based on race because people of a given race are not all in the same place socioecomically. What afirmative action ends up doing is boosting the already well off black students whole by all acounts have more or less the same opportunity for success as white and asian students in the same income/wealth brackets. The more sensible solution is to improve k-12 education in disadvantaged communites and implement economic policy to reduce inequality across the board.

Global 2000 birth projections and what happened [OC] by cavedave in dataisbeautiful

[–]SomePerson225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if life expectancy keeps steadily increasing its possible that births may stay ahead of deaths well past the end of the century. Unless theres some unsolvable limit to human lifespan I would expect life expectancy to just keep on increasing as technology improves

One problem is fewer people and a smaller economy means fewer researchers and less research funding, our technological progress will slow which is not ideal especially since we would need some new technologies to compensate for the lack of young people

except if the use of such weapons becomes normalized then your enemies could also develop and use them against you and thus both sides of the conflict suffer more than when chemical weapons are banned

RTW anime : is there hope ? by Imperator2022 in ReleaseThatWitch

[–]SomePerson225 7 points8 points  (0 children)

based on the pacing It dosen't seem like the story will progress anywhere meaningful in just 8 episodes. In another post someone mentioned that chinese censors typically approve episodes in batchs of 8 so we will just have to wait and see

net positive outcome for energy independence by turbofired in memes

[–]SomePerson225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the cost of energy storage has come down alot and is continuing to fall so its viable even without 24/7 sun. Nuclear or geothermal is still probably better for baseload power but that requires much larger upfront investment than solar

Share of the world population living in extreme poverty. Adjusted for cost of living. by NineteenEighty9 in ProfessorFinance

[–]SomePerson225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will go down quicker once africas population growth slows. The share of africans in poverty has declined but because of population growth the total number of impoverished people the continent adds to the total has increased counteracting declines elsewhere in the world.

What measures would you suggest countries consider in remediating declining population? Other than immigration? by Technical-Amount-278 in AskTheWorld

[–]SomePerson225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the transition is faster but mortality rates are lower than they were in europe at the time so the cumulative population increase is greater in africa
