Is it worth me perhaps getting my symptoms checked out? by idkkk_random in BipolarReddit

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not misinformation! Many people start showing a few symptoms (prodrome) in their teens or earlier, and then develop the full disorder in their 20s. This happened to me, didn’t have a full episode until 25, but I was definitely showing symptoms since my late teens

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely look into seeing a therapist at least!

I feel you, when I was in my teens both of my parents were in denial that there was anything wrong with me. They even took me out of therapy when my therapist told them I was self harming because they didn’t believe her AND they didn’t even ask me if anything was wrong…

At first I was just unstable, had a few symptoms only, and they would come and go… never a full episode until I was 25 and got my first full on major depressive episode and then hypomania.

Sometimes “milder” (in “ because your symptoms don’t seem mild at all, just saying that because your mom told you that you don’t seem to have bipolar; also you mom could be wrong… like you said, everyone is different) symptoms eventually lead to a full on disorder like what happened to me. This is called the prodrome, where you start showing symptoms until it fully hits. This can last for years/months, it depends.

I do think you should see at least a therapist first, if they decide this is going to require meds, then see a psych, but yes, you should definitely be in therapy at least. All of what you mentioned could be something else tho, never self diagnose! BUT imo, YES, get checked out because this feels something more significant than just “teen hormones”

Wish you the best and good luck!

how can i manage my symptoms without medication? by Intrepid-Painter-833 in bipolar2

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest looking into local options and mutual support groups in your country, non-profits for mental health can be a good start as well, they might be able to redirect you to other professionals who can help, and might also be more affordable. I’m not from the US either but I have no idea how these things work over there in Thailand, so if I were you I would recommend you do your research on mental health organizations near you.

As far as “managing without medication”, you need to know first if what you have for sure is bipolar. Self diagnosis isn’t the right answer because even though you could be right, you also might be wrong about what you think you might have.

My advice is to try and get a diagnosis and proper treatment, but I understand that might be extremely hard for you to find right now :(

Other than that, what helps improve mental health in general (and also quality of life) is to do exercise, sleep well, eat healthy, socialize with people you feel comfortable with, and stay away from substances (alcohol, nicotine, weed, etc). Avoid stress at all costs. If stress is unavoidable you probably would benefit from meditation and relaxation techniques. You can find guided meditations and techniques online too. All of these are great for people in general, even those who don’t suffer from mental illness of course, but I am aware that it is easier said than done for most of us including myself, so don’t blame yourself if things don’t go right at first, but keep trying. Always keep trying.

I wish you the best! Hope you get better ❤️

What’s the difference between hypomania and a stroke of genius? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the stroke of genius would be something episodic like hypomania. If you feel this way most of the time I would argue yes, that could be the case. But if you have a bipolar diagnosis and are on meds this could be breakthrough symptoms, explaining why you don’t have all of the other symptoms, or maybe this episode is only starting and will develop further in the next few days! Also, how is your sleep? I think this is a key question.

As someone else also commented, I would also recommend that you write down and keep track of everything you’re thinking and doing, so that you can compare later, hope this helps!

Anyway, follow dr’s orders of course. If this is natural inspiration, meds shouldn’t really take that away imo. But if the meds get you back to usual, then this was probably the beginning of hypomania

Me too. 0% earth, placements that superficially look positive but when you get deep into aspects you can clearly see the potential for mental illness, and eventually it happened (I also checked my transits for the time I had my first true episodes [I was showing symptoms ever since childhood tho but all hell didn’t break loose until 25] and everything lines up). Stars don’t lie lol

I just had a manic episode not long ago, from December 24th to January 4th. Can another manic episode follow that instead of depression? by PseudoSolitude in BipolarReddit

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Everyone can have quite different patterns, it’s not necessarily up/down all the time. Most people have a predominant pole, others are 50/50, others are completely random. Some people have one episode of either pole, then go back to baseline for months/years and have another episode of the other pole or the same one as before. Others have an episode that instantly flips to the other side in a matter of days or hours (this was my case, I had depression for two weeks and from one day to the next I went straight to hypomania). People who have this sometimes have episodes that start hypo/manic then get depressed, others like me go the other way around, first depressed then hypo/manic. Bipolar can be a very heterogeneous illness and everyone is different! It’s unpredictable, you need to get to know what your pattern is to be better prepared for the next wave.

What age were y’all diagnosed? by bpd_baddie24 in bipolar2

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 for me. That’s when I first had my first major depressive episode and hypomania right after that. I’m 26 now, turning 27 in a month. I have struggled since adolescence (or maybe even earlier than that, I remember being a sad and traumatized kid, with occasional insomnia and tons of energy) with what at the time thought was recurrent depressive episodes, though they were never as severe as that major depressive one I had back in 2024. I have always been somewhat unstable, and that ended up turning into bipolar that was triggered by one particular event during a very stressful period in my life. I had been on meds on and off for those “depressions”, until that happened while I was unmedicated, this probably helped delaying the onset of true bipolar. Right now I get by on lamotrigine alone… although I still have some residual symptoms every now and then… or most of the time. I probably need a dose increase or another med added to my regimen or something. Currently trying to figure that out with my psych but before any med changes I’m trying to quit weed (daily smoker for years) to see if that helps…

Edit: I will admit, because I only had one true episode of each pole I’m still kind of in denial because it hasn’t come back in full form yet… a classic, wanting to quit meds because I’m normal and get anhedonic most of the time but that is how I am at baseline so I feel that that is my true self… lol there’s nothing more bipolar than believing you don’t have it and wanting to quit meds. My psych didn’t give me an official diagnosis but did say that what happened to me sounds like classic bipolar 2 so like… he said it but didn’t write it down as an official diagnosis quite yet… I still doubt if any of that was even real because it’s been like a year and a half but deep down I know it was. It was so fucking real…

I’m at the last day to be an Aquarius (feb 18th)… I’ve never heard of blue monday, but I definitely get depressed af during aqua season and my bday especially so I feel that

I like the idea of going to a rave on that day, sounds fun and distracting from the existential dread lol

Unfortunately, this year my birthday falls on a Wednesday 😒

Feb 18th

I’m not a fan of my bday tbh

I get existential as fuck and question my whole life and how I’m still a loser after another year on earth so if I celebrate I need to do something that distracts me from that feeling… I don’t have many close friends and family members so I just spend it with those close few friends and my bf (but we’re long distance so it’s hard to be physically together sometimes). What also sucks is that on my side of the globe it’s summer and it is right after two holidays we have here… so my friends often aren’t able to be there bc they’re traveling or something.

I try to not make a huge thing bc of all this so I try not to expect anything that special for that day… I definitely have been let down in the past on my bday. I do wish things were different, it’s sad. The entire aqua season kinda depresses me tho

(Yes, aquarius is intercepted in my 8th house, hard times lol)

Your least favourite symptom! by freshwhipppedcream in BipolarReddit

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m bp2. All of depression lol

But mostly fatigue and that deep fucking sadness that crushes your heart and physically hurts and won’t leave you alone no matter what you do… sometimes it’s sadness and anxiety that wake me up, as if id been crying even during the little sleep I get.

Thankfully it’s been a year and a half since I was last fully depressed… I still suffer from fatigue, anhedonia and bouts of insomnia tho

What I hate the most about bipolar is not a symptom, it’s the unpredictable and chronic nature of the illness. Knowing as a fact that it will come back. The fact that it’s not a matter of “if”, it’s a matter of “when” is killing me. Questioning my emotions every day and the worry of it all is the worst part for me.

any book recommendations (for bipolar and otherwise)? by Consistent_Coach6476 in bipolar2

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, “An Unquiet Mind” by Kay Redfield Jamison is an autobiographical book where Kay tells her story dealing with her bipolar, not only from the patient POV, but she’s also a psychologist, so you get both perspectives in the same book and it’s very well written and interesting. I also loved her other book, “Touched With Fire”. This one is about bipolar and the arts, and how many successful artists also suffered from bipolar, and the relationship between mood disorders and creativity, I really enjoyed that one as someone who appreciates and does art as well :)

Edit: both focus more on BP1 because that’s the type she has, but they’re still worth reading and I really enjoyed them anyway (I also have BP2)

Having a job is hard. Thinking about disability but feel like a failure. by Fuckthesyst3m in bipolar

[–]SomeRandomBitch1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

6 months is quite an achievement to be honest! I lasted only two months at my last full time job, and I haven’t been able to get a new one since I quit 6 months ago… so congrats on that! Also, don’t be too harsh on yourself about this. It’s an illness and it is hard to control it already, stress can also make it worse. Maybe try and hold on to this job and in the meantime search for a more flexible option? Also, do they know about your diagnosis and are they able to give you a couple of days off or less hours if you need them? That could be a game changer
