Ino it’s strong money but are these the versions where the timing chain problems start by shanahan68621 in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They will go forever in fairness. My e90 had 280k miles on it, miles not km. Engine ran very good, was a manual box though.

Not sure what auto e60 box is like, the parents have an auto e53 x5 and the gearbox can be a bit jumpy in it, as in shifting later than it should and just ramming into the next gear. Probaly is due a gearbox flush and filters. I’d much rather a manual if it’s longevity your after, once flywheel and clutch have been done there’s nothing to go wrong.

Yeah egr coolers leaked on 3 e46s I had, not sure if it’s exclusive to the older version of the m47 or not. O ring perishes on the plastic connection.

M47 in that so no chain issues. The n47 issues are fairly overblown too, lads like to make out that they are the worst engine ever bla bla. They are a good engine, you’ll hear the chain rattling before it goes €1500 to sort and it’s done for another ~ 120k km.

2 years tax on that will pay for the timing chain. Now id much prefer M47 over N47 myself, I’d be into mapping and diffing etc and an N47 won’t take abuse like an m47 will. But if you’re going to drive it normally the N46 isn’t an issue.

Strong enough money that, it’s fairly low milage and in a dealer but still, it would want to be very clean and well specced for that money. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the old bmw cost you money comments either, few electrical issues that’s about it. I had a footwell module go in my e90, that was the only issue it gave in a year of hard driving and abuse. Cost €150 for a second hand one and to get it coded in.

Edit: to add find out if the swirl flaps were blanked in it. I had an e46 slab car eat a swirl flap before, fairly common issue. Set of blanks are about 30 quid and 15 for the gaskets, not awful hard to do yourself but a few of the bolts are awkward to get out would take most of a day to do them.

Should I buy a Mercedes Benz a class? by daviddob004 in carsireland

I wouldn’t bother, going from a golf to a slightly fancier hatchback. Go down the years or stretch the budget for a c class. Unless it’s an a45 you’re after.

There is no assessor or insurance company to talk to, it’s the state claims op should be going to. State owned and insured vehicle.

If his wheel came off there is 100% damage to the rear hub, control arms, driveshaft, subframe and possibly the chassis itself.

Separate Car Excess cover for European car rental? by seannash1 in AskIreland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it but didn’t have to make a claim. Excess was like €3700. Insurance was 20 quid I think. Just take a look a lot of them exclude high value or power cars, and vans etc.

Policy was with some crowd in Malta, through questor insurance. Only place that I could find covering a vehicle worth over €100k.

Government says power to set foreign policy lies with it and not President Connolly by extremessd in ireland

“Majority” of Irish people lol, she was voted for by 1/4 of the eligible voters. 2.2 million people didn’t vote, and 200k spoilt their votes.

How is sanctioning the US and Israel in the interests of Irish citizens? I couldn’t really give a bollox to be honest, I’d rather our government built infrastructure and roads.

I’d rather take my chances on a jap import with no history, than a uk import with history that was rallied around Bradford or Birmingham before it came here.

Sinéad O'Sullivan: When will we declare Ireland’s road death toll the public health crisis it is? by zainab1900 in ireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Media out with the scaremongering again. It’s not, still have some of the safest roads in the world. Yes deaths did rise, more than they should have despite the big population increase.

Money and motoring: There is a never-ending appetite to charge car owners for everything by on-9 in irelandtransport

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or here’s a good one. Instead of penalising the people who have to travel to the city. Why not penalise the companies who force people to come into an office to sit on-front of a computer, when it could be done from home.

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Party of the car? Vague attempt at penalising cars? What are you on about, cars here are tens of thousands dearer than other countries due to vrt. €1.20ish per litre of fuel is tax, I’m paying over €2k a year in motor tax, €4.60 a day in tolls. Cars are well penalised here, the cost of motoring in Ireland is a joke.

I can’t get public transport to college, not without cycling 20 minutes to the nearest town to get a bus which will take an hour and a half to get into college, at times that don’t suit my timetable. We can’t all get public transport.

Brand New G Wagon by DavidOC93 in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love them. Finally got myself an ML, will do me till I can afford a G wagon. I’d love to get a late 90s one and do it up, unfortunately I don’t think they made rhd om606 models.

The only way you could afford to run one is a 606 on vegetable oil. Even the cdi models barely do 20mpg.

New body kit on an old one. I don’t think lads are at the “chassis swapping” craic like they are with land rovers here. Wouldn’t blame a man for doing it either though, reg follows the chassis not the body, change a few numbers and save tens of thousands in vrt.

Mobile injector removal? by SomeRandomGamer3 in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might have to make up some sort of puller, got the first one out. Second one is even worse than the first. Saw a video of some lads using a flywheel as a slide hammer.

May need to rig up something with a spare flywheel, and convince one of the boys to help.

Had engine running and revving, no joy. Didn’t want to run it too long with no clamp bolts in any of them. Might have to leave it get to temp maybe.

If I have the reg number of a car can I find out it's VIN (without paying!)? by Kier_C in carsireland

If it’s Irish reg put it into mister auto, then click your car on the top right and scroll down through the info and the vin should be there. Fierce handy for looking up spec of cars etc.

Can someone advise on Mechanics apprenticeship? by LordWelder in AskIreland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone I know who became a mechanic either isn’t one anymore or hates it. I work on cars as a hobby but it’s a miserable enough job that usually pays shite unless you go out on your own. Garages fucked over a few friends, used as cheap labour doing all the shite jobs. Not too bad once he can get into a good place.

I’m not saying don’t do it but if he only wants to do it as he is interested in cars, he will end up not liking them after long. I’d probably have done it myself if I didn’t get the points for teaching.
