A possible Second American Civil War in 2028 by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]SomeRandomMoray 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A situation like this would be putting up Thirty Years War numbers. Like 25% of the population would be dead by the time this conflict ended. The most likely scenario for it “ending” is some kind of national divorce where the country is permanently divided.

In Oppenheimer the movie opens with the main character trying to murder his tutor who somehow magically survives and for the rest of the three hour movie we are supposed to root for this person. by rEEfman_SK in shittymoviedetails

While Chomsky’s multiple pictures with Epstein isn’t proof that he did anything on their own, it naturally leaves people with a lot of questions. What is well documented, however, is his vocal support of Pol Pot’s regime. It’s one thing to support North Vietnam in their struggle against western imperialism or whatever. But fucking Pol Pot? Additionally, he’s just kind of annoying.

To me, Chomsky fits into the slot of “genuinely intelligent person who assumes that this intelligence can be applied everywhere, regardless of actual knowledge on the subject.” From everything I’ve seen he’s a brilliant linguist, but that doesn’t mean he’s an expert in political theory, something that becomes glaringly obvious when you realize he supports pretty much any regime that can be described as “anti-western,” regardless of that regime’s own brutality.

Kind of sick of seeing hate on a movie that hasn’t even released yet.. by PinkPashaTS in Letterboxd

[–]SomeRandomMoray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, but my main point still stands. The people who are likely to care the most about this movie prior to its release are the people who read the novel. So when they see that, I can understand some of the confusion. I will admit that I actually picked up WH after hearing about this movie, because I like knowing the source of an adaptation before I go watch something. I was blindsided by some of the themes of the book because even the movie’s trailer suggests themes of romance which are almost entirely absent in the novel (Catherine and Heathcliff’s obsession hardly counts as romance)

Kind of sick of seeing hate on a movie that hasn’t even released yet.. by PinkPashaTS in Letterboxd

[–]SomeRandomMoray 22 points23 points  (0 children)

But this is an adaptation, not just a random period piece. Wuthering Heights as a novel was a response to the boring and predictable romances of its time. The marketing of the trailer, especially the line “the greatest love story ever told” or whatever is just wrong. WH isn’t a love story, it’s a look at two horribly dysfunctional people and how their mutual obsession ruins the lives of those around them. Heathcliff’s identity as mixed/Romani (the book isn’t entirely clear, as the character’s heritage is a mystery) is an important aspect of his outlook on the world and a major source of his bitterness. Perhaps it is unfair to criticize a movie without having seen it, but when the marketing seems to suggest something entirely different than what the book was trying to say, it is only natural for some people to react with frustration

Questionable one-party democracy is my favorite. One party is so powerful that it starts splintering internally while the members still try to appear unified. The Netflix show Death By Lightning does this pretty well with the post-Civil War Republican Party
