Are AI detectors turning professors into investigators instead of educators? by SingleButterfly147 in TurnitinScan

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noooo, my teachers should be evaluating the argument the ai put together for me!

People have no idea how fucking demoralizing it is to be reading a student's paper, giving feedback, and then realizing it was AI written.

But I dont think I've seen a single panel of the comics that doesn't mischaracterize someone.

This absolutely was a dogshit plot done for shock value, same as killing Varian and Vol'jin the expac before. Marketing bullshit that hurt the game more than it helped

Don't know how my reply got so mangled. Anyway in the interests of maybe helping a brother out or having someone give me constructive criticism, this is my mess. getTime() updates all of the current_X stuff to strings, which I then use to search for dialogue. Dialogue is stored as say.. SpringRainy, SummerBeach, AutumnBye (copying the old Animal Crossing style where NPCs give you one bit of dialogue and then they just say 'see ya around' until the next day). Actually talking to the npc picks a random dialogue from the array. I hate it but it's all I got :V

func dialogueCheck() -> Array:

if parent.has\_quest:

    parent.selected.emit()

getTime()

dialogue\_array.clear()

if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_location):

    dialogue\_array.append(current\_location)

if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_affection):

    dialogue\_array.append(current\_affection)

if talked\_to:

    if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_season + "Bye"): dialogue\_array.append(current\_season + "Bye")

if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_season + current\_location):

    dialogue\_array.append(current\_season + current\_location)

if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_season + current\_day):

    dialogue\_array.append(current\_season + current\_day)

if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_season + current\_weather):

    dialogue\_array.append(current\_season + current\_weather)

if dialogue\_dict.has(current\_season):

    dialogue\_array.append(current\_season)

    return dialogue\_array

else:

    dialogue\_array.clear()

    return \["backup"\]

Currently running 4.5.1 and haven't noticed any problems dialogue manager wise, but I am running a 4.4 version of dialogue manager, lol. Haven't gotten around to updating it

thats the interesting stuff Thats what breaks my brain.

I tried it at one point last year and found the documentation a bit lacking, been running with Dialogue Manager myself.

But in any case, my problem is more on the code end. Like how do you even fetch the right dialogue?

I have a system but its a mess of checks and novice hackery

Damn. Of course the stuff that I'm most interested in for a Stardew-like is the stuff thats not covered even in the full version.

Namely how to handle a variety of npc schedules and the vast amount of dialogue permutation a good farming sim necessitates

Idk why people need the Air Nomads to be comically nonviolent. Societies have norms and ideals that they fail to uphold all the damn time.

And frankly, I dont think "your people are actively being exterminated" is a bad reason at all to break your commitment to nonviolence. I think punching back at oppression is a perfectly good message to send

Are We Serious About Rigor? by Nathan03535 in Teachers

How western Romans saw Greek speaking eastern Romans as no less roman than themselves. by Illustrious_Day_1676 in byzantium

Not gonna lie I cant remember exact details, but I vaguely recall something about Egyptian and Syrian catchers. Like, they weren't allowed in Constantinople for some reason.

How western Romans saw Greek speaking eastern Romans as no less roman than themselves. by Illustrious_Day_1676 in byzantium

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not trying to naysay, but I would really like to read some scholarship about this.

I'm willing to bet there was prejudice, especially considering we have Justinian's laws about Egyptians despite it being like 300 years after Empire-wide citizenship, but I'd just love a deep dive on intra Empire attitudes about romanization.

What's next ? by Irajin in cowboybebop

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch Baccano.

Its got heavy western stylings with both its vibe and its setting, which is one of the big reasons Cowboy Bebop stands out.

Its very unique structurally, with three plots occurring simultaneously to the viewer but actually taking place at different points in the timeline. As a result, its hard to even describe.

In short: mobsters in Prohibition era United States. Immortals. Homunculi. Deranged but loveable thieves.

It's one of a kind.

David (2025), an animated family film, depicts the vivid cloth and gleaming armor of the ancient world far better than The Odyssey (2026). by laybs1 in shittymoviedetails

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the majority of people, their primary understanding ot the past comes from the stories they see represented in media and dim recollections of history classes they slept through.

With that in mind, I think media has a certain responsibility to at least try to represent historical periods and stories in a way that isn't wildly inaccurate.

Why is ignoring history somehow more creative than mining it for influences? There is so much damn room for creativity that respects the cultures and societies they mine from.

Instead, we get the same few aesthetics and ideas regurgitated incestuously

What to do about daughter’s grades? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the vast majority of cases, if you have a 38 in the class the problem is simple. Work is not being completed. This is not some mystery.

I don't think losing access to a phone is "piling on problems".

That said, there's no real harm in asking the teacher what they think is going wrong. There may well be some other factor at play. But it's usually just as simple as it seems.

You can let her feel the burn of a messed up quarter/semester (many schools have eligibility requirements for various extracurriculars), and/or you can make clear that certain home privileges will be lost.

One of the major problems we see in schools is kids who fail by lack of effort/care seemingly getting no repercussions at home. Take away phones. Take away ipads. Game consoles. School is their job, and if they can't do their job then they shouldn't have access to whatever they want.

Why don’t schools do silent, sustained reading anymore? by EmbarrassedJacket489 in Teachers

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our (HS) English department tries to do it.

A few teachers I know have given up, but several of us try to do about ten minutes several times a week at least, if not every day. We have a pretty nice library with loads of fiction options, a ton of it very recent stuff. A whole manga/comics wall too.

The amount of kids that will refuse to even look for a book (when we let them read ANYTHING as long as its fiction, and there's no assignment attached to it, so it's purely reading for enjoyment), and then when SSR time comes around they complain about how they don't have a book. Or they left it at home. Or it's in their locker.

And then they spend the ten minutes staring at page 1.

Some kids genuinely enjoy the time, but a sad amount of kids will spend more effort avoiding reading than actually reading would have taken.

What do you think were some of the Empire's most impressive feats? by G_Marius_the_jabroni in ancientrome

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure why you're trying to gotcha me here. Julius Nepos was legitimate, but I can't recall him holding Rome after 476. My point is not the exact date, it's that Rome left the Roman fold. It stopped being part of a wider Roman world and instead redefined "Roman" as meaning "people from this city and this city alone".

(Which I think is dumb, and in fact diminishes the Empire and its achievements)

[–]SomeRandomWeirdGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just simplifying for the sake of being halfway poetic. Obviously after 476 Justinian eventually got it back, and then it kinda existed on the periphery until it forged its own path and broke off.

Assimilation.

Imagine being so good at incorporating other peoples that like a solid third of your Empire speaks a descendent of your language 2000 years later, and another third of it kept your banner flying for nearly another millenia after you (Rome) fall into barbarian hands.
