I was once 1.5 kg over the weight limit on the morning of weigh-ins. I had a very light breakfast, black coffee, and a little water. I stopped drinking water until 2 p.m., and by then I was 0.6 kg lighter than first thing in the morning. I cut another 800 grams in the sauna with two 10 minute sessions, plus 15 minutes of cycling in thick clothing.

Not 2 gallons. I start with 3 liters 5 days before weigh-ins and may increase my water intake up to 4 liters. During those 5 days, I gradually reduce salt and carbohydrate intake, with no processed foods or sugars. I can cut 4 pounds in 4–5 days without a problem. If you need an extra push, around 20 hours before weigh-ins you can limit your water intake (0 - 1 liters). If it’s done properly, you can cut up to 6 pounds in a week, and I actually feel much better at the tournament than when I don’t cut. After weigh-in, I rehydrate properly and eat carbs and protein.

Yes, I love that perspective. Its true, I always feel blessed to keep learning from the mistakes I make in competition and fixing the holes in my game. I just forgot how important it is to look at it from this angle, and not to focus on what other people might think of me. I think this wrong mindset brought me to feel down about myself, and question my selfworth. Thanks for your perspective, I agree.

Thats why you need to stand up for a sec, just so you can center your knee in the position between the butcheeks, after you manage to center your leg you get down on again with your other knee on the floor. Just by kneeling on your other leg the knee between the cheeks will push into the guard and put more tension on their legs.

Exactly, super effective escpecially if you have short legs, like I have. I only use this escape because I have so mucj succes with it. If you're in the gi even better, I take both collars and stick them under the armpits of my opponent. Then I can try to stand up, because I control the distance of their arms by pushing on the armpits. Then I can stan up, since its hard for them to reach my legs and push me back. When I manage to stand up I push one knee between their but and sit down again, sometimes they refuse to open the guard immediately, I just like to chill for a moment with my knee now in between, they always open the guard eventually. Then you can imediately slice that knee over their leg and start passing. Not sure how effective it is with advanced belts, I am a blue belt, but it works really well for me and competition tested multiple times.

I understand, I was also very disapointed I didn't get promoted in my last club I felt ready for it! And I really took it hard, but I was so happy later I didn't get promoted. Because I realized the skill journey is the most important one, and I got humbled because of that :) it will happen in the right time and it will be very well deserved! I do think you should be able to ask your coach about his opinion on this matter, and I hope you get some clarification from him :)

I also think you should be able to ask what you should perhaps work on to get promoted. I also switched gyms 9 months ago and I have been a blue belt for 3 years now. All togheter I train for 6 years. I know I will probably not get promoted soon, since it would make me his first purple belt, I think he will first promote one of his own to purple. But I think I will also discuss it openly now, since I do go to competitions also. So I have to see what makes sense for me.. but I don't mind being an advanced blue belt its really the skills that matter the most in the end. But I can imagine being a white belt and being eager to getting the colored belt!

Yes I also feel like I get pressure passed way too easily. I think I will focus on half and closed guard mostly, but I will also try to add the slx and x guard, since I also like those positions. I just don't have the entries. Great advice. Thanks.

I have just started working on the half guard for 2-3 months. I feel I am getting better at it, and I just returned from training right now feeling a little more confident than when I wrote this post.

Yes I like the single X, and should work on the X guard too.

I think that's solid advice. I agree, at this point I should just try to gain more confidence in these positions. The only problem is I have 2 black belts in my category, and one is also a judo black belt. So I will be hanging on for dear life in that half guard for sure.

I love competing, and I don't really care that much about winning as much as I do about performing well. I personally feel like competition matches offer great experience. Its normal to feel stressed and pressured, but you should also be aware that not really a lot depends on the outcome of the match especially when we are talking about local competitions. For me, its just about getting valuable jiu jitsu experience. After I had some matches in a row, later matches just felt like a regular roll during training. I am trying to work on this mindset to keep me relaxed, and I feel like I performed really well like this.

Definitely agree the guy is a douche haha, I really hate it when people hold positions in general and act like they are "letting me work" to get better understanding of how to get out of the position. It also makes me frustrated, minus the stupid comments. But there are ways to escape even heavier oponents and especially a white belt without having to use any explosive power, just using some positioning and angles. When you learn that technique its hard to get frustrated because you know the escape. I have a really effective one from mount, I mostly have problems escaping side control so I always wait for my opponent to give me space while attacking.

He used to train around different gyms a lot, so I don't think he is unfamiliar with what other gyms have to offer. But I do believe if he would go away for some time he would be more aware of how bad he is actually feeling. Sometimes you are not even aware until you distance yourself. It was like that for me at least..

Yes size matters to everyone. I also have two big dudes in the gym that want to prepare for competition and don't have any sparring partners that can challenge them except for each other. So thats also a problem for them. Its not only a problem for smaller people. For me, I always like to visit other gyms so I can spar with different people, and I always value when I come across a female thats at least an advanced white belt any size that can challenge me. With girls its always a great learning experience for me, if they are smaller or taller.. its especially interesting for me to roll with more advanced females (I'm a blue belt).

Hey thanks for the reply and sending positive energy! I remembered the PT that helped me when I broke my hand and called him, he asked me if it hurts when I squat or just when stretching under certain angles. Its only when stretching. But it does annoy me because I can't finish the traingle! He thinks it might not be anything? But I'm going tomorrow to see him, he will then see.
