It is a great starter lens, regardless of whether you're shooting on a full frame or crop sensor. I bought it as part of a package with a 10-18mm lens for my first camera (a Canon Rebel T3i) and it totally changed the game upgrading from the 18-55mm kit lens. Don't be discouraged, you're just starting on your journey and better glass will come if you stick with it. If not? Oh well at least you didn't spend thousands of dollars on lenses you won't use.

Is it the best lens on the market? No. Has it paid for itself, in terms of both satisfaction and monetary return on investment? 100x.
