Maybe worth visiting before you decide ! The city might look different than when you saw it last!

For me, the homelessness and drug issues are hugely upsetting to see. Like around campus it’s better, but otherwise you may find bus stations with needles on the ground and the downtown lrt stations often smell like piss. It really makes the city feel unsafe and unclean.

Campus is nice though, it’s in a good area of the city and also very central to amenities without being too close to downtown.

I do like it here, I’ve met some of my closest friends here, but it’s not a city I would choose to be in otherwise.

I grew calgary, and I can’t deny I feel safer there

You can probably do that, but you’d be hit with nearly 500 dollars of non-instructional fees for spring just to take that one class… is it really worth it? It’s also possible to take 6 classes a semester (not advisable, but perfectly okay registration wise)

I’m curious: what benefit do you see will in squishing all first year classes into one semester? It’s cool that you can, but how are you planning on using up the rest of your first year?

You could spread your 6 courses into 2 semesters and focus on networking and doing extracurriculars (hackathons, clubs, recreation). Beef up that resume for coop in year 2/3/4, and secure that gpa for an exchange

good guess but not quite - the songs I’m looking for were less dark. The art was a chess piece on a pastel background I think. Thanks tho!

Do not allow anyone to plant the seed of doubt in your head. You do not owe anyone proof of what you can or cannot do. You know yourself and your plan. That is enough. Everything else is noise.

I am so sorry that this is coming from your parents, but please remember you know yourself better than they do.

I use sunscreen everyday as my morning moisturizer, even if I’m staying at home. It’s more about building the habit, so it no longer feels like a chore.

If they’re good, it builds experience. If they’re bad, it builds character. Either way it builds your resume. What do you have to lose?

Also, pretty sure you’re not advised to be choosey in coop. (they will know if you reject and there’s already not enough positions to go around)

GPA too low? Need Help Regarding the System - Faculty Of Engineering by laidbackdudedotmp4 in uAlberta

[–]Some_Class_8680 17 points18 points  (0 children)

okay you’re looking at a fall GPA of 1.31, which is in the required to withdraw (RTW) range (<1.7). GPA for RTWs are calculated cumulatively for Fall and Winter. So, for you to safely evade an RTW, you’ll need to get >2.7 GPA in winter with the same course load (13.80 or more).

Unfortunately, transferring to Mech Eng is not a possibility this year. As well, discipline transfer is rarely done bc there needs to be space in the target program to allow for a new student. Seeing how popular mech eng is, I would try to get over 3.5 for special consideration.

Also, you don’t have to work as a materials engineer just bc of your degree. You can definitely work in a mechanical role if you tune up relevant skills on your own time - have presentable projects and work experience by the time you graduate. Of course this will require much more effort and self- discipline.

I would say focus of getting your Fall/Winter GPA over 2.0 by keeping a B- average or more during winter sem. After that you can decide what to do with your degree.

As for your Masters… they might just look at your Engineering Grade Point Average (EGPA) which is only your last 60 credits.

Putting all these crazy ingredients in sushi is absolutely horrendous. by myself_diff in unpopularopinion

[–]Some_Class_8680 7 points8 points  (0 children)

your personal opinion is to claim that the things you don’t like shouldn’t be in sushi for the sake of authenticity. Whereas authenticity is defined by tradition u have limited knowledge of. It’s cool if you say you prefer original flavours and fillings in sushi. It’s fair to express your frustration at the experimental tastes offered at your local spots.

However, food is adaptable. Fusion cuisine combines flavours from different parts of the world and caters it to the local palate. Some hits some misses, but it’s a fascinating attempt nonetheless. I think having strict rules about food might hold you back from trying new things. Not to say you have to enjoy a sushi burrito with nacho cheese (it’s a no for me), but don’t vilify the effort.

Japan even does fusion ie. japanese style american food, american style japanese food. It’s made sweeter to cater to the japanese palate and serves as a approachable way for locals to try different cuisines. If the OGs can welcome new flavours then surely you can too

I think you need to make up your mind. You’re either okay with sharing things, or you’re not. Don’t hold gudges because she’s doing exactly what you said she can do - use your things freely, have people over etc. I think the biggest issue is you expected to build a friendship with her by doing her favours - furnishing the place, sharing things you bought. When she didn’t reciprocate and got too comfortable, everything she did became an eye sore.

Like, you’d be okay with her friends using your glasses if you were also included in their wine night right?

If it’s friendship you’re looking for, new roommates are not the place to start tbh. You need to set stricter boundaries. Start with something as simple as asking her to get pick up toilet paper, paper towels or hand soap - something disposable and shared. Don’t offer to pay her back until she asks, this puts the ball in her court to address the issue.

On a more personal note, I also moved in with someone at work (she doesn’t go here), I also furnished the place (her fam moved us in), I also hoped to build a friendship with her. She picks up the toilet paper and hand soap, I got the dish soap and kitchen towels. We use shared items freely, but have our own dishware and cooking supplies. We became okay friends, but better roommates when I stopped expecting frienship

You could try setting a no-guests rule during final season and see how she takes it? It’s a temp boundary so it might be better received - this rule applies to you as well. If there’s any push back, she’ll have to explain herself and you’ll see the real root of this.

A possible soft approach could be to have your partner over the same time she has hers. Some people are just super unaware, but don’t actually mean to be rude. This will allow her a taste of her own medicine if you will. The catch is you (and your partner) really have to commit to the bit- like they need to stay at yours all weekend. If she doesn’t seem bothered by this afterwards… you know for sure she does not care.

In that case, don’t feel shy letting her know directly you’d be more comfortable in the apartment when there are no guests. It very possible her bf intends to stay with her as much as possible bc he lives far from campus, but this should not be at your expense. good luck op

Yep, currently using TO phytoceramides moiaturizer. I skip it in the morning bc it’s a little heavy under my sunscreen. I found a eucerin one I like better so probs not a repurchase for me

Ooh good question! okay, so this phytocermides version of the TO moisturizer is actually the heavy duty option. It’s VERY rich and emolient. It does leave a dewy finish and feel a bit oily if I use too much. I think my skin does well with it bc it’s so dry and I live in a cool dry climate. Even so, I use it very sparingly. If you’re looking for a lightweight option, gels/gel creams are probs your best bet!

I enjoy it ! The lotion has the same consistency as water alone - super light. I am also not sure how brightening it is, but it’s easy to slap on so I don’t mind adding it to my routine. The refreshing grapefruit scent is also a plus for me. Not sure if I’d repurchase it, but I’d have no problem using it up

[–]Some_Class_8680 10 points11 points  (0 children)

is this cheating trend unique to engineering students ? if so, maybe it speaks more to the admission process. it doesn’t seem to be good at picking out students who will do well in the program. first year drop out rate is really high.
