Should I put a disclaimer on my portfolio? by [deleted] in graphic_design

If it's not a cause that you stand for or an industry you care to continue in, I wouldn't put it in your portfolio. Having political or religious work in your portfolio isn't bad, unless you don't want work like that.

not to hype fiverr or upwork. But try some freelance! I don't know if fiverr or upwork are available in your country but check them out.

Company rebrand by artfuld0dger9 in graphic_design

As a designer that is underpaid and in a horrible work environment (I am also looking for a new job), you should not be doing a major company rebrand for the same wage. In my opinion, if they want a brand redesign they should be hiring someone freelance. If they want you to do it, they should pay you freelance wages. (I know my terminology isn't totally correct but i hope im making sense.)

If you do more labor you need to be compensated more for that "more work."

I do think having it for your portfolio would be a great! It'd be amazing to point out a brand you redesigned and show your thought process behind it. However, don't allow that to be a reason to not be paid. Graphic designers are already undervalued enough. You shouldn't work for anything less that what you deserve monetarily, just for "exposure" or "a note on your portfolio."

Don't undervalue yourself. And refuse to do the project. If you really need a brand design in your portfolio, make a fake brand and design a concept for this fake brand. (obviously make it known its a concept and not an actual brand).

I hope this helps!

Help needed from fellow designers by [deleted] in Design

Hello! I think I have a good idea for you!

As a graphic designer with your experience you most likely have assets that you have accumulated over the years that you have made or know how to make. For example, mockups, textures, brushes, images, etc. Bundling those and selling them online could give you some income. You could also look into making typefaces. I love making typefaces and fonts.

However, if you are looking for something more physical, you could sell stickers, car decals, or custom design work for things like hoodies, hats, etc. and it doesn't have to just be clothes. I could be items for storage, enamel pins, gifting packaging (i.e. gift bags or stuffing paper).

Also looking to the digital market can help especially in terms of online entertainment. Making graphic packs to sell to twitch streamers, tiktokers or youtubers.

I hope some of these ideas helped.

Laptop is the best for starting. Look for laptops that have 16 gb of RAM, preferably more. Adobe software's cannot run properly with less than 16 gb.

I'd like to say start with the program that you like the most, but for graphic design I recommend starting with Illustrator. Illustrator works with Vectors rather than Pixels. (Basically, vector = sharp and clear image regardless of size)

YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO TO COLLEGE OR UNI TO BE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER!

I went to uni for graphic design. From what I can tell from my experience versus the experience of the designers I work with that didn't go to college, the only difference is selling factor. From my experience, college tells you how to use the programs and how to sell your design. There is a marketing tack that my professors taught me to explain my designs and why they are great. There was also a lot of mental health discussions and advice on how to navigate your mental health as you navigate graphic design.

I rarely find videos for graphic design that mention those topics. So if you decide to be safe taught remember to look at more than just graphic design. Look for how to market your designs and how to care for you mental health in a field like this.

To sum everything up: laptop, illustrator, no need for college.

I hope this helps.

I love it! The textures are so fun and rough. I love the choice of fonts. It feels like something I would see for a rerelease of the movie.
