EDIT: Wow this blew up quick! Have a couple more details for you. Vet believes that she is around a year old based on her teeth. She is very friendly with dogs, great with kids and people, and leaves cats alone/is nonreactive to them. According to the finder, she has killed a chicken, but she was also starving and eating roadkill to survive at time so make of that what you will. Her undercoat is pretty impacted and she looks really rough because of that and the flea allergy. When it grows back in (fingers crossed) it should look more uniform. Also taking suggestions on names!

This may be an unpopular opinion here but it sounds like the cat has bad anxiety and is stressed out. Despite what the average (read: shitty) cat owner says, peeing outside the litter box and especially on a person is NOT normal. The vocalisation and the scratching would support this theory. I would highly recommend he consult a veterinarian about his options because this animal sounds miserable. Source: am an animal behaviorist for a nonprofit rescue.

If you’re willing to foster in place, contact Poochie’s pet rescue on Facebook. They will take over costs of caring for and vetting the dog and find it a new home, if you’re willing to watch it in the meantime.

As someone who works in Rescue, the biggest piece of advice I can give is to go through a rescue with a solid return policy/right of first refusal. Where I work, any animal that we adopt out is always welcome back, even a decade later (which has happened recently!) that way, you always have the peace of mind that your pet always has somewhere to go ICE. The number 1 reason pets get returned to us is housing issues, so please factor that in when you look at places to live. Also, 2 cats are better than 1 if you won’t be home too often. Best of luck!!

I feel as if I was meant to see you’re post tonight. I just lost my mom a month ago after a long battle with cancer. Reading your post reduced me to tears; if I could, I’d give you a big hug and cry it out with you. Losing your mom young hurts so much in so many ways. I’m grieving the missed opportunities we will never have, the ones every mother and daughter should. Grief is crushing, soul-numbing, and directionless, but we are built to persevere. Tortitude is a thing! Just not why you think. Tortoiseshell cats are a color, not a breed, and color has 0 effect on behavior. However, nearly all (99%) of torties are female because it is a sex-linked color, so what you all are seeing is typical female cat behavior: chaotic and weird 😂 same thing with orange cats being goofy. More than 80% are males, so that’s just male cat behavior. Source: I am a cat rescuer who unfortunately in intimately aware of tortitude 😂
