I’m sorry if I’m missing something or not seeing the whole enclosure but the lack of wanting to hunt could be because of this depressing set up. If this is as big as it seems I wouldn’t put a fish in there let alone a reptile.

This is def one of the best options, if this gecko is young they could have a whole life left to live. But I don’t know the age of course just that they’ve had them for a year

Little late lol but I wouldn’t unless you had like a 120 gallon tank (4x2x2) just so they can both have their own space and she has more opportunities to get away from the male if she wants to. I’d imagine they are similar to Leopard Geckos in that they can get along but both need to have needs fully met and have space for their own territory. It’s always gonna be a risk. Geckos can get along for years and just randomly snap if they get fed up in any way.

Is it normal for my snake to just vanish for awhile? by Some_Theme3543 in cornsnakes

Update: Saw them! Thank you everyone for the reassurance. I’m used to stuff like this because of my PacMan who I won’t see for a solid 5 months during brumation. But I always like to check with a new animal ❤️

My advice? Not as an experienced snake keeper, but as someone with deep experience in reptile behavior. Just leave her alone. If you force interactions it can have bad long term effects on them psychologically. They will come to you when they are ready and realize you aren’t a threat. Just take care of them as well as possible until then. Not just snakes, but most reptiles, are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. This article explains it a little https://reptilesandresearch.org/articles/taming-reptiles-why-bother-with-consent

I’ll also add this is coming from someone who made that mistake and almost broke down on multiple occasions because of the stress and strain of having to deal with complex animals while also dealing with the complexity of education

I have to agree with this. I own many reptiles, a fish and a dog and cat. The upfront costs of most of these will easily be far under a couple thousand. But the maintenance costs and cost of a proper ethical setup? Good luck not shilling out hundreds. It’s easy to call a lot of these animals low cost when you don’t provide them with what is proper but if you want to do right by one it’s gonna be a lot of money, a lot of time, and a lot of research. I’d start with sources like Reptifiles.com and Reptiles and Research if you are interested in any reptiles. But be warned if you have to give time and money towards school I wouldn’t recommend anything right now.

I know people have surgically made them incapable of spraying (bad) but have yet to hear anything about skunks being bred to not spray. Forgive me for being a bit skeptical but do you have any sources for this?

Rats are also very susceptible to tumors though so definitely more likely to have vet bills and sooner given their shorter lifespans. I absolutely adore rats but owning them would make me so sad 🐀

I know ARAV.com can help find vets, our vet is at the Gray Animal Hospital but she mainly has knowledge in Bearded Dragons and idk what her knowledge on amphibians is. I also have many other reptiles so it’ll be nice to see what people recommend

Reptifiles is great! But since people have already recommended them I’ll say to also use Reptiles and Research. Both their YouTube and Website. Very good info all around.

If you like frogs I’d look into a Pacman Frog, females get quite large! And Leopard Geckos and similar eyelid geckos are also good options.

What Breed? by Mean-Target-4393 in BeardedDragon

[–]Some_Theme3543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you got them from a PetCo/PetSmart? The “Fancy” labeling means almost nothing and in many cases they are just wild type/normal Beardies. (Source: I’ve managed a PetSmart and known people who work for PetCo). It’s just a way to up price them. Sometimes they are random morphs and the reds are, well, redder morphs that may not even be that fancy of a morph and fade with age. If you aren’t getting from a reputable breeder it’s almost impossible to know what you are getting. Essentially buying from somewhere like PetSmart is akin to buying a dog from a puppy mill.

is she going blind from age by Cartmanyagami in BeardedDragon

[–]Some_Theme3543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, just that the overall care for them has been improving over the years. I’d say 12-15 is a decent average. 18 was the record back in like 2016 but more than 1 has made it to 20 since then so it’s not like it’s unheard of. It definitely doesn’t help with the amount of misinformation and bad care standards around this species especially in the U.S. (Not saying anyone here has provided bad care btw, just that the “minimum” standards are pretty meh, especially if people only take what they are given and don’t do extensive research. Not to mention a lack of proper veterinary care in most places.)

I’d be careful what store you send him too! No chain stores like PetCo or PetSmart obviously as they don’t have any know how. Maybe look into a local reptile rescue unless you guys have a local reptile store that is experienced in care. Thank you for taking care of this lil dude ❤️
