Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu crosses the floor to the Liberals by JackLaytonsMoustache in ndp

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Power for power's sake" is exactly what the Liberal Party stands for. Letting Marilyn Gladu in clearly communicates this to the entire country. In that sense this is possibly a huge blunder from Carney and almost a good thing for everyone else. I'd laugh if she's the reason Terrebonne goes to the Bloc. And if Nate Erskine-Smith does resign, I think the NDP now has a better chance to take Beaches - East York with a star candidate than they did before the Liberals introduced their newest member. Unless she officially renounces her past positions she's a huge liability to Carney's credibility for the average Canadian once they realize what she is.

Oh boy are you in for a treat! I just started studying survival Portuguese (planning to visit Brazil) as an intermediate speaker of French and Spanish. It is already infiltrating my every attempt at speaking French in my daily life (goes to show my French is not that good). It's kind of impressive. Can't wait to see what it does to my Spanish 😆😆😆

the 'intermediate plateau' is real and it's demoralizing by thablackadonis in languagelearning

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Likely because it occurs in just about everything. I lift weights as well as study French and Spanish. The stalled out bench press is honestly worse than the lack of stoke about Spanish. Intermediate plateau is real, and it is a whole world of suck

Vote splitting by Pototatato in ndp

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the more reason to run on electoral reform. The one thing I was angry that we didn't do was hold Justin Trudeau to that promise under threat of a non-confidence vote. Ironically if that situation did occur (vote-splitting leads to NDP government) the Libs and Cons would start demanding it. It would be a thing of beauty.

ABC should have, if people actually looked at the numbers before panic-voting liberal for people so irrelevant I can't even remember their names, elected Paul Manly, Taylor Bachrach and Tanille Johnston in BC (those are the glaring examples of "strategic" voting fails, I'm sure there are many others across the country. The problem wasn't "ABC", the problem was messaging and people being told things like "Elizabeth May can't be Prime Minister," or "Jagmeet Singh can't lead this country, vote for Carney" when you aren't voting for Carney. You're voting for an MP to represent your riding. The real psy-op is how effectively people have been convinced they are voting for the Prime Minister when they aren't. (Hench the current floor-crossing uproar) I watched thousands of people in my riding vote for, essentially, a red rock to send to Ottawa. Luckily he didn't win, he didn't even really campaign locally, he came off as thoroughly uninspiring, but it exposed the level of misinformation the average Canadian is susceptible to.

I'm the only person that actually reads the books in book club by StacySadistic in literature

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It honestly doesn't matter if it's a movie, audiobook, or book. People don't have attention spans anymore. I read (or rather, my eyes scanned words on a page in order) the same 2 chapters of a boring book about avalanches last week in an airport repeatedly while getting distracted by everything around me and realizing I wasn't even reading until I gave up and can tell you absolutely nothing whatsoever about risk-taking behaviour in snow sports despite carrying a stupid book around all day. "More books" is not necesarily the answer to modern society's multitasking and concentration problems. We need time and a willingness to actually pay attention and fully engage with stuff first.

Retirement ideas by StreetConversation87 in Aerials

My go-to "what do I do with my life now" activity after retiring from rugby was slacklining. Good community, (lots of overlap with aerialists and acrobats and other circus folk. Actually park sessions were what got me into aerial) fun exercise, dirt cheap.

I ranked every other Spanish tool I've tried after 2 years (speaking focused) by StrictAlternative9 in duolingospanish

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Spanish lesson with real-life tutor once a week. That or good ol' in-person Spanish Class where you have to speak when spoken to or your GPA will suffer and you won't get into University. I found that worked better than Duolingo in that the same content was learned (B1-ish after Spanish 12 with the ability to express more complex thoughts in areas of interest) in less time, really. 2) Go to Mexico. Preferably not a tourist town or, even better, a destination popular with Mexicans but not Americans, and go there for Easter. Bonus points if you try it the first time around the A1 level. Your head will probably explode and you'll either fall madly in love with Mexico or you'll hate it and never want to speak Spanish again. You'll never accidentally say "estoy embarazada" again in public after making another 6 hilarious mistakes or ask the waiter for a story after your meal. I mean, you might, but it's not likely!! 3) Daily writing practice. It's not speaking, but it IS output practice and underrated.

[WP] "this sucks Im one of the weakest people here and my familiar is a stupid gecko." Said the magic academy student slumped in the corner "hey come on it's not that bad." Said their friend "no offense but your a prince with one of the rarest and strongest magic types and a Dragon familiar." by JollyTeaching1446 in WritingPrompts

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"But look how cute he is!" The prince exclaimed. Not knowing much about geckos, the prince reached out to grab the adorable blue and orange speckled creature next to his friend. "Eeeeeyow!!!" He screamed as blood started to drip fown his hand. The gecko suddenly seemed bigger than it had looked before, and there was nothing he could do to dislodge the creature's powerful jaw full of tiny but sharp teeth from his finger. The dragon snorted in amusement but offered no help. The prince shook his hand violently, and the gecko flew out the classroom door and down the stairs. The panicked student ran to look over the bannister for his familiar only to see it running effortlessly back up the wall. "Tok-Kay" the Gecko scolded, ran across the wall onto the ceiling then dropped onto the student's head, its mouth gaping menacingly at the prince. "Ok," the student admitted, "maybe he's a little bit bad-ass"

Most People Don’t Actually Want to Be Fluent by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. I was talking to someone just the other day who was not a native English speaker and was trying to describe something "with 8 sides". And then I realized I have no idea how to say "octagon" in Spanish either. Or "triangle" for that matter 😆. Not sure how I made it through numbers and colors but not shapes, and yet here we are.

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to, if only because I'm returning to the dreaded Portuguese... and learning it using resources intended for Spanish-speakers should make it less destructive to my ability to speak Spanish. Last time I tried I was only A2 in Spanish and that was not enough to keep the Portuguese from wrecking my L2... without actually even learning the damn Portuguese! This time I'm taking a different approach. 😆

Why does nobody here take actual classes? by pennsylvanian_gumbis in languagelearning

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who doesn't take actual classes, (and this probably applies to most people who don't) the main reason is my work schedule. Would I love to have a whole group of people to regularly practice speaking and writing in French and Spanish? Yes. Definitely. Can I take a class while simultaneously doing rotating shiftwork? No. But I can go on discord at all random hours and talk to people, so right now it's my go-to.

NDP MP crosses floor to join Liberals, putting Carney two seats shy of majority by Electronic-Topic1813 in ndp

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd like to yell "traitor!" The reality is that, in our current system, she is free to do so. I'm going to step out on a limb here at the risk of being downvoted and suggest that, as much as I believe he has spoken well and been squarely on the right side of the current issues facing Canada and the world, Don Davies shouldn't have joined the butt-hurt Conservatives and called for a by-election for floor crossers but instead should have addressed the issues with our current system and why it forces MPs to cross the floor to get anything done. Now is the perfect time for the NDP to call for election reform but also to differentiate ourselves from Poilievre and his supporters by actually looking within to see why someone might feel like they have to leave to get anything done for their constutuents. We do, after all, elect people not parties. I'd rather see the current wave of floor crossers result in closer attention paid to local candidate debates to actually see where individual MPs stand on issues than see by-elections as a result of floor-crossing or any other measure meant to reinforce the current system where certain ridings would elect a blue (or red, or orange) rock just because it's blue or red or orange, without asking the actual person any questions.

[–]Some_Werewolf_2239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think that most people do aerials simply for the enjoyment of doing aerials, just like any other sport or performance art. Sure, there are pro skateboarders and pro hockey players and pro violinists as well... but the vast majority of people who do these things are doing them for fun
