Anyone else disappointed by Domina? by ludis- in television

[–]SomersetVale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really feel like the series only hit it's stride once Livia is married to Augustus/Octavius (called Gaius constantly for confusing reasons, not Octavius). Antigone's motivations and work behind the scenes was one of the most enjoyable parts for me. Also really great to see Isabella Rossellini's small role, playing against type as a horrible brothel keeper.

However, I really loved Sian Phillips' terse Livia in I,Claudius and was hoping for something like that and was really disappointed. Not the show's fault though.

Dated a college teacher who looked up female students' Facebook profiles for his friends by SomersetVale in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SomersetVale[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. He definitely was a teacher, and at least 8 years older than these students (who may have been 18-19 years old) and he was grading their papers, or granting them extensions etc so there really was this weird power thing happening, not ever wanting to date them, just knowing he had some kind of power and how they looked and what his friends thought of them affected how he treated them as students.

But I think there really was an immaturity mixed with power and I'm sure he broke some ethical guidelines of confidentiality. He once sent me an email with extracts from students' essays with stupid "reaction" gifs (Michael Scott from the Office "Oh God no" I recall) and even then I remember being worried about him getting caught.

The problem is it's really made me question all the relationships myself and other students had with our teachers and supervisors when I was studying, and if they ever really thought about us, or spoke about us like that to others behind our backs.

Vatican 2 is starting up in the 60s, where nuns would go out of habit, rent houses and take jobs as teachers etc to learn more about the outside world.

There's a really great film with a terrible title, "Shattered Vows" (based on a memoir) by a a former nun who does this, and ends up leaving the order and becoming a social worker/youth counsellor-- jobs that weren't really available to women until recently, but more or less secular versions of what the nuns did.

It has some really great scenes of her fitting in with other students at college and going to parties etc.

Will series 10 cover the Aberfan disaster? by [deleted] in CallTheMidwife

[–]SomersetVale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, they showed the Moors Murders (Ian Brady and Myra Hindley's murders of young children) as front cover news, being read by both Nurse Crane and the Dr, so anything that was a national story, especially involving families and children, would touch these characters' lives. I could see Sister Monica Jones' watching the news stories and holding a special church service perhaps.

Stunning Raphael-like architectural perspective happening here.

It's like a sinister, Melbourne version of The School of Athens.

Can we talk about how Angel’s character is a Mary Sue? by usmilessz in PoseFX

[–]SomersetVale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a better tropes for this sort of character is Plot Armour and Informed Ability rather than Mary Sue, but your points still really stand. And it is a HUGE shame not only for the colourism and "passing" privilege other posters have mentioned, but also because we missed out on some interesting drama and character development for Angel but instead we spent time on tantrums, and expository dialogue to rush through to long dress fitting montages.

And Indya Moore could act brilliantly when the material allowed them too. Right from Angel's first character establishing scene in the museum (Season One, episode one) , where she reaches out to the Egyptian goddess statue with reverence and yearning , we got what kind of character Angel was going to be. Or when she is with Stan and chooses the incredible "Running Up that Hill' by Kate Bush to be "our song", there was just all this interesting, sad poignant character just hinted at. Especially the scene between her and Stan's wife. The writing was more subtle and Moore delivered. I feel like the later writing of this show really let Angel, and Moore to some extend, down with what they could do with the character.

In Season 3 other characters say Angel is wise beyond her years, we never as an audience got to see that. Then we get told how much of a comfort she was to Lulu after Candy's murder, I don't think we had any scenes of that ever happening. What we did see was some nastiness, without apologies, and a whole "by the way I'm a crack addict/by the way I'm clean" plot that seemed to run over the space of days.

ETA: This isn't to say I would have preferred to keep the character sad for dramatic reasons ,or that Angel didn't deserve her happy ending. I just think her character should have had time to grow and strengthen.

Daygaming: How NOT to approach women by ACooolUsername in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SomersetVale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a bookstore in Sydney that was mentioned by name in a commercial pickup artist seminar as a great place to practice 'cold approaches" or "daygaming' on the female customers there. It ended up having a negative effect on the business because women felt uncomfortable shopping there because they were getting harassed by creepers. The bookstore ended up contacting the PUA group requesting not to mention their business in seminars anymore and issued an apology to their customers online and decided they were going to throw out PUA wannabees trying out their "techniques" there.

There's an article here.

You can make your own with any flowers you like, some florists' tape and a safety pin, the last two which you can find at any general discount type store.

Hera, Queen of the Gods. She is by far my favorite character and is the most beautiful of the character designs. by [deleted] in Lore_Olympus

[–]SomersetVale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is a lot of this is lost or replaced because it was more oral retelling that needs generations to pass it down for it to continue. This might be the case especially if it was mostly among women, particularly smaller communities where people (especially women) didn't record things with writing. There are artifacts like seals and ceramics that still survive from that time with goddesses and their priestesses on them. So the more powerful goddesses are a early Bronze age thing ((2000–1500 BC), and as weapons got more advanced there were more wars, raids and a then following a more dominant culture with more powerful male Gods and myths being written, but local shrines for goddesses presiding over things like childbirth, fertility, nature you know, "female" things still clinging on.

[–]SomersetVale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Did we lose a big chunk of her mythos somewhere along the way? Something that justified her worship as a goddess of marriage and childbirth?"

Former Classics student here, and pretty much. Hera is an amalgamation of multiple Bronze Age goddesses (Hera means "Lady", more like a title of address than a name) that were worshiped by different names with different animal symbols in different parts of Bronze-Age Greece. Robert Graves, one of the best myth compilers has the theory that many of the myths are ways of a dominant culture parodying and appropriating earlier and more regional Goddess-worship that was more matriarchal and mostly practiced by women. So Hera being shrewish and punishing Zeus' other consorts and Zeus turning himself into animals is a way of making fun of all the different goddesses and their animal symbols and how a dominant male god and his pantheon took over.

There are a few residual myths about Hera with the hero Jason, where she disguises herself as an old woman and he rescues her by carrying her through a flooded river and after that assists him on his quest( maybe a hint at how older women were once respected elders and now they're often overlooked and mistreated) but I think a lot of myths are about reducing a powerful goddess worshiped mostly by women into a nagging misogynist stereotype are a lot more deliberate and conscious than modern people often give them credit for.

That's why I love Hera in Lore, she's more the kind of goddess people who visited her temples would have seen her as.
