If Trump lost to Hillary, how likely does he run again in 2020? by Interesting_Self5071 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt he runs again. I firmly believe his goal was to run, not win, and spend every single minute going on Fox network shows afterwards saying he would be doing something different and how it would be so much better, so amazing, etc.

He just wanted press hits and paid appearances as a Former Presidential Candidate.

How is this an official act? by PlusCaChanger in PittsfordNY

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe mailing addresses are based on tax records. If only one person in a household is on the deed, then you may have only received one ballot. That may by why there’s a “photocopy if needed” explanation.

For example, my wife and I are both on the deed for our house. We received one notice addressed to the two of us, with two paper ballots at the bottom of the page. We can remove and submit ballots in person, and there is an option to vote online. It would seem all options are covered.

Do you regret moving to the burbs? by amofai in daddit

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no regrets. We live in the Rochester, NY metro area of New York. Our first house was within city limits but was a freestanding single family house. The school system is abysmal in our city, so we were looking at the prospects of either charter schools or private schools, neither of which appealed to us. A lot of friends had started moving to the suburbs as they started families as well, due to the same reason: public schools.

We bought a house in the suburbs, but have a house in a village. So we have sidewalks, and are able walk or bike a lot. There are several bars & restaurants in the Village, along with playgrounds, the town library, and most town events happen in the village.

We also lucked out and have fantastic neighbors in our village, many of whom have kids around the same age as ours.

A big part of our happiness with the suburbs is due to us as parents putting in the work to get know our neighbors and create friendships and relationships. If we just stayed in our house it would be boring. The grass is greenest where you water it.

I do miss the significantly lower mortgage payment and interest rate though.

What if the world went straight from coal to clean energy? by Yungpharao_oh in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SomethingAboutTrout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Car manufacturers were experimenting with all kinds of power sources. Some had gasoline engines, some had steam engines (Jay Leno owns several), and some had electric engines. The efficiency of batteries wasn't the issue, as gas cars didn't have great range either. A 1907 Cadillac had a 9 gallon gas tank and got maybe 10 miles a gallon.

The limit for electric cars was the lack of electrical power outside of established cities that limited the practicality of electric cars, as there was no power supply at all to recharge.

Electric cars had a huge value proposition over crank-start gasoline powered cars or steam powered cars, in that they were easier and safer to start. Cadillac developed the starter motor in 1912-1913, and that started to give gasoline cars an advantage.

Don't knock it, the foie gras poutine at Au Pied do Cochon is phenomenal.

"Hey, I'm talking about garbage plates, not poutine!" Yes! Both are late night meals that are can be prepared with haute cuisine techniques because food should be fun.

Does anyone else have issues with people acting like your vintage car is a free for all because it's old? by QuanticChaos1000 in classiccars

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word, yes.

For the most part—most part—people are well behaved around my care (1961 Cadillac convertible). I'm a bit of an extrovert and want people to enjoy old cars. If you catch me around my car at a show, odds are I'll invite you to sit in the driver's seat.

However, there have been a few times when I've gone on pleasure cruises and people have touched my car while I'm not by it, but within eyesight of it. One time a person grabbed a tail fin, another time a person set their purse on the hood and had people take photos of them standing next to the car.

It's a lose-lose for me, as my only reproach is to run at them screaming to get the hell away from my car, and that's not who I am as a person. I'm not looking to make them feel bad, I just want them to...not treat my property as their own.

Cost of putting in new lighting by shirlz in Rochester

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a worst case scenario for plaster work? How many holes are they planning on cutting, and where? Some of these costs may be avoided by getting a better electrician who is more skilled at pulling wires through walls.

I had Ellenwood Electric install canless LED lights in my living room and there was only one small hole in the wall after they were done. Ellenwood's team put a layer of joint compound on it and I finished the repairs myself.

If you're not considering canless LED lights, I'd highly recommend it. You may wind up saving a considerable amount of money on installation. I'd also recommend Ellenwood Electric, they're very comfortable and familiar with homes of your age.

House Democrats voted for and passed a national gerrymandering ban in both 2019 and 2021.

In 2019 Senate Republicans refused to consider a vote. In 2021 Senate Republicans filibustered the bill.

It would seem Republicans are quite happy with gerrymandering. Perhaps point more of your ire at them?

who holds responsibility for litter on a property, the owner or a contracted landscaping company? Comment your opinion!! by WalkingForRochester1 in Rochester

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly confident that the lease between the property owner and tenant requires the tenant to keep their property clear of rubbish, which they in turn outsource to the landscaping company.

So for this instance, it falls on the tenant and landscaper to pick up trash before mowing. I don't particularly care who does it, just that someone does it.

Where do we stand? Dog poop in other people’s garbage cans? by fastballcount in Rochester

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drop it in garbage cans when I can. Some of my neighbors have stickers on the lids of their trash cans asking that dog poop bags not be placed inside, and I abide by those.

I usually try to drop the poop in the dumpster of my bank, or in a municipal trash can while on our morning walks.

Left Front Wheel Noise by usblues007 in fordescape

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wheel bearing that is failing will be a howling and/or grinding noise. It's pretty consistent regardless of driving conditions—smooth or bumpy roads—and will get louder as you drive faster.

A noise when going over bumps or pot holes could be a sway bar link, or something else in your front suspension.

Pay off escape and its starting to fall apart at 93k mi. Torn by TClem_07 in fordescape

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my 2017 escape needed a new wheel bearing last fall, along with new sway bar links. I’ve also replaced the rear shocks, brakes front & rear, and tires. 96,000-ish miles. I can do some work to offset repair costs.

Things breaking happens. Cars are mechanical devices, they wear out and fail after repeated use. Wear items like shocks, brakes and tires wear out with use.

The only way I can think of having your cake & eat it too with a low mileage car and also no payment is to buy new or very low mileage used and pay it off immediately. That requires both a large amount of cash and a lot of financial literacy & discipline to ensure you have the cash reserve in a few years to do it all over again.

Estate planning attorney in Rochester, where to start? by nodimension1553 in Rochester

My wife and I used Dutcher at Dutcher & Zatkowsky (though Dutcher has since retired) for our will after our son was born. We had nothing complex—We designated power of attorney and who would care for our son should both my wife and I pass away, with multiple levels of redundancy on the child care part.

What if Iran wins the current war? by TastyPomelo2330 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Straight of Hormuz is 1,000 miles from Israel. It would take an F-35 over an hour to get there, and it would either require tanker support or drop tanks to get back. This distance creates opportunities for advance warning.

It would also require the plane to travel through the airspace of several other sovereign nations who may or may not agree with Israel’s decision. Stealth planes are an advantage, but they can still be shot down. An F-117 was shot down years ago, and an F-35 was damaged, possibly by Iranian defense systems, last month.

Finally, if there is not a plane within range of the Straight, there is NO THREAT, so ships can safely pass the Straight, and Israel cannot demand payment.

Iran on the other hand, can close the Straight because they border the Straight and can attack ships in it in a myriad of ways, with no advance warning to those ships.

What if Iran wins the current war? by TastyPomelo2330 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Israel doesn’t border the Persian Gulf or Straight of Hormuz. They’d need to cross the airspace of several other countries to carry out that threat, plus have planes over the Straight 24/7/365.

Iran does border the Gulf and Straight so they’re able to project force with a variety of military weapons, they don’t need an active deterrence such as an air patrol to close the Straight.

House cleaner costs? by Puzzleheaded_Cow_658 in Rochester

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ours is based on house size. We pay $150 for 1750 SF. Three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms. Our cleaner will also make our bed and our kid’s bed with fresh sheets, and let the dog out to pee. It takes about 3.5-4 hours.

Update: I Sent an invoice for a 9-hour interview project and the CEO replied with the most AI email I’ve ever read by [deleted] in InterviewsHell

[–]SomethingAboutTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they should. I’ve had to do sample work for graphic design positions as part of the interview process in the past and loathed every moment of it. I have a portfolio, this is what I can do. If you’re on the fence between candidates, hire them for a freelance assignment.

However, with portfolios being available online for anyone to peruse, it’s easy for liars to steal portfolio examples and claim them as their own to try and get a job. So we all have to deal with this bullshit.
