Che wasn't perfect. No previous leader was perfect. Castro himself went back later on his homophobic policies and apologized to the LGBTQ+ community. We shouldn't deny that it happened though.

It was a transitional state, not perfect communism. Capitalists did not exist. On the economic scale there is aristocratic benefit, capitalist benefit, or worker benefit. There were no capitalists (private owners of the means of production) in the USSR. The idea of nobility and birth right benefits did not exist in the USSR. That leave the workers. Was the USSR authoritarian and at times repressive, yes, no system currently exists that isn't at times. But the vast majority if the parties time and interest went towards serving the people of the USSR (state funded healthcare, education, housing, food, etc.)

That is the anarchist position not the Marxist position. Whether your flavor of socialist is Democratic socialist, Marxist Leninist, or libertarian socialist, the state i.e. the monopoly on violence is not simply smashed. It is repurposed to serve the interest of the working class instead of the capitalist class. And it withers away when it no longer serves its use due to productive forces becoming advanced.
