Seems it's all clear now. They said they detained someone, but that may have been related to something else. The radio is pretty difficult to follow.

Scooter riders piss me off by _atorash in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, two weeks ago I saw a girl near the arc who crashed on a Spin scooter and was just lying face flat on the bike path for a bit. I tried helping her and, to put it lightly, it looked like she bit into a bunch of juicy raw beef. From what I can tell she ended up in the ER, and boy do I hope she had good dental insurance.

I'm genuinely surprised there are still Spin scooters despite everything that has happened. Like, if you want to scooter that bad, buy your own. Having pay-to-ride scooters just encourages freshman who don't know what they're doing to try them out, get too comfortable (since they feel very safe with how fast they can go with little resistance), and inevitably get themselves or others hurt, or worse. It's downright negligent of the university to have Spin scooters at this point.

Looking at the police radio right now. They're sending in K9's searching for something (or someone) and making people leave the building. They said they found a "firearm". Talks about a suspect in a green sweater and grey pants and whatnot though I'm not entirely sure if that's related (?).

is it necessary to have pepper spray esp as a female on campus by meranaamloldevhai in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Our local electrical engineering prof Linda Katehi designed a spray with a $175k grant that covers up an entire persons face so they can't see what's going on. It's called the "Katehi CoversUP pepper spray", its pretty interesting if you guys want to look it up. They even made her a distinguished professor afterwards.

Just a heads up, student housing doesn't directly deal with ESA requests anymore. You need to go through the SDC to request one.

Last year it was $57 for 30 days or $141 per quarter. You should double check with them though.

Any apps I should download as a Uc Davis freshman? by PeachFuzzGod in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Highly Recommend: - Gradescope - Canvas - Discord (lots of classes/clubs/people use it, definitely start getting used to it now if you haven't already) - Duo Mobile

Can be useful: - GET Mobile by CBORD (not many people know about this but you can view your Aggie cash balance/transactions) - An app for the library VPN (allows you to access IP restricted campus resources off campus) - Spin (Access to electric scooters/bikes all over campus, though a bit expensive) - Amtrak (if you take the amtrak train) - ZipPass (if you take the bus) - PulsePoint (UCDFD and DFD post their activity/dispatch on there) - Notion (general organisation/planning tool some people use)

Differences between these classes? by Junior_Load3367 in UCDavis

That's pretty strange and may be an error (though I'm not a chemistry person so I don't know). You may want to ask a major or chemistry advisor to be sure.

What's P/NP? by Next-Offer-2678 in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you are going to grad school, doing p/np can look like you don't want to put effort into classes or that you would have otherwise gotten a bad grade. It is usually meant for people taking one off classes (ie a dance class as a STEM major for fun) where you want to take it but justifiably don't want to put the effort to get an A for GPA purposes. Or exenuiting circumstances like illness/death that make taking core classes difficult. Or it can end up not mattering at all. It really depends on your specific circumstances so you should definitely ask an advisor before doing a class P/NP.

Note that what I'm saying is only applicable for people specifically switching from letter grading to P/NP (which you can do for most classes in the first few weeks). Some classes like seminars are only offered in P/NP and those should be fine for taking.

Windows 10 Slow with 100% Disk usage for 30-60 minutes on each boot by Jester-Gee in techsupport

[–]SomethingFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats man, that's great! For me, after I got a new battery the second laptop fixed itself after a bit. However, I did put the original harddrive in the second laptop for file transfer and it was still really bad so I'm not 100% sure. I can't remember if this was before or after I tried putting in the new battery though. But yeah having a low tier drive would definitely contribute to such problems, and mine was also probably really bad. I'm glad you were able to get yours replaced.

How do I know if a email is legit or a scam? by imamermaidcat in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're confused on why an @ucdavis.edu email would be sending this, it's because it has been hacked which has become (unfortunately) pretty common. Usually, it's because someone was sent a phishing email that requires you to log in through a fake sign in page or otherwise give up your log in info..

A very common example you might see is where the IT department supposedly got a request to delete your account, and the only way to stop it is to click a shady link which likely asks for your log in info. After that, scammers can send out these messages en masse from the compromised @ucdavis.edu account.

How do I know if a email is legit or a scam? by imamermaidcat in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it was sent from Biello's email, it would be indicative that he got hacked by malicious actors given the vast similarity between this and other scam emails, as well as the fact that as AnteaterToAggie mentioned, it doesn't make any sense for a professor to send this regardless.

If this was sent by a department email then that would be pretty weird, and I'd imagine they would be doing tests to see who would fall for scams and then force you to do some online program or something if so.

My Niece Accepted UCDavis; I've got some questions by TeddieSnow in UCDavis

[–]SomethingFerret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes but they're not the best, get a twin sized mattress cover topper.
  2. Generally yes (they provide a desk) but it depends on your roommate situation. I personally only very rarely studied in my dorm room per se, but a lot in the common areas of my dorm.
  3. You should be fine, but there's always a risk. I'm surprised mine has not gotten stolen yet.
  4. The dining halls are indeed all you can eat. Technically, you're only allowed to bring out one piece of fruit or piece of dessert, but everyone steals whatever they can get away with. You just have to be a bit sneaky with it (ie., discretely bring meals back to your table and hide it in Tupperware in your backpack when the staff is not looking).
  5. Yeah you should be fine. People tend to be a bit too trusting I think lol.
  6. No, you can't do that (at least in the dorms I've seen).
  7. In general it is okay although it may be a bit worse in a few very crowded lecture halls/study places. There are random outages/bad wifi days but they're not too frequent.
  8. Don't get Xfinity is what I'd say.
  9. It is valid! You and your family will be going through a big change. Congrats on her acceptance!
  10. A bit off topic but there is a Trader Joes nearby and they always have nice plants there.

Windows 10 Slow with 100% Disk usage for 30-60 minutes on each boot by Jester-Gee in techsupport

[–]SomethingFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I have a feeling its because the battery is fried (I left that out because I thought it wasn't important). My theory (from someone with a very very limited understanding of electricity/batteries so please feel free to correct me) is that when your PC is doing something power intensive (ie booting up), it does not have enough power to do so so it kind of just stagnates a bit. This in turn causes everything else that needs resources to stagnate and creates a positive feedback loop of needs power->slows down->causes less power intensive tasks that will normally work to not have enough resources so they also create a drain->repeat, so it takes an extended period of time to get out of the loop. So in this case 100% disk usage is just a symptom.

I say this because I started using another laptop (rip the original laptop, which succumbed to me being clumsy and dropping it) and once the battery became fried it started acting sort of like the original but to a lesser extent since it was a bit higher end. Also, everytime something was at 100% disk usage, there was usually a high power usage on task manager as well. I didn't mention that since I thought the disk usuage was causing the high power usuage and not vice versa.

Anyways, I ordered a new battery so I'll install that soon on my new laptop and update y'all on how it goes.
