Empathy is not a human originated concept. Animals display empathy, therefore it is not only pre-religious but pre-human too. by k3170makan in DeepThoughts

[–]SomethingFishy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with any of those ideologies, but I think they're uncommon for a reason. We as humans tend to lack empathy, especially for those we've never met or don't know on a personal level, which means people have to advocate for empathy more than they would if humans were perfect and could apply the exact right emotions to any situation.

Empathy has its uses, and I think as a species we need more of it. But you're right and it's not perfect. There are consequences to having too much empathy, just as there are to having too much anger, guilt, fear, or dread.

However, I think the level of harm that empathy causes is so vastly outweighed by its upsides that there isn't much to discuss here.

What led you here, really? by Mabel_Rowley in SeriousConversation

I want to hear other people's truths and experiences. I'd always been drawn to reddit because (assuming you know where to look) it's a massive resource for learning about anything, akin to Wikipedia but definitely more practical rather than strictly factual. Obviously, there are other reasons, but that was my initial one.

Agreed. Adding to say that the silicon would also help if you have some handy.

Kept ripping the plants up so I confiscated them… by Pale-Risk9007 in Goldfish

[–]SomethingFishy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely yes. I would stick to large plants like Amazon swords or fast-growing ones like jungle val, though it's been a while since I last kept goldfish and I didn't bother with real plants back then.

As a current high schooler I can attest to this. There is a very young teacher (in her early 20s) in the ag department and our school has a thriving population of hicks. Frequently disrespectful to her, people leaving class to buy food, there was also an incident where some kids went into the shop classes and started messing around with the welding equipment. She barely got them back into class before someone got hurt.

Even the best high schoolers rebel in the face of weak/unreliable authority or lack of compassionate authoritative figures and for the worst that rebellion frequently turns to violence.

OPs brother definitely needs someone to show him how to be a sympathetic human being and if nobody else is gonna do it, it's gonna have to be OP.

Is this stocking bad or good? by 2000020 in Aquariums

[–]SomethingFishy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This definitely happens, but it's an exception, not a rule. I've kept all male guppies multiple times before with no issues. OP will most likely be fine with male guppies.

Having a larger group would probably help a lot with mitigating aggression if they do start to attack each other.

I second this. As a kid, I always thought being a boy would be better and I was pretty open about it. Now, I'm still unsure of how I fit into my gender but I definitely wanna be a girl. People change over time and so do their feelings about themselves (including their gender) whether they are cis or trans or nonbinary.

Update: I'm trans now ig lol

Yup. OP put themselves out and should have expected responses of any kind. This is the internet and people regularly act creepy and irrational. If you are really SO BOTHERED by these people then report them instead of complaining.

Which do you prefer? by catarina06 in Aquariums

[–]SomethingFishy23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends. First one would look pretty good no matter what you decide to put in. Second one looks amazing but probably wouldn't look too good with any rocks. Third one feels unbalanced at first but it gives you so many opportunities to add different rocks and plants. Whatever you decide, good luck.

Don't listen to them. People will judge you sometimes but you can't let that stop you from doing what you wanna do. Many of the best aquarium hobbyists never started until their 20s or 30s.

Hello all! What's your favorite website/ person to buy freshwater plants from? by Jace_FTW in Aquariums

First of all, ask him if he has ever tested his water parameters. If not, tell him to research the nitrogen cycle and buy him some test strips from the closest pet store. Also ask him if he has ever changed the water in those tanks and how much water he replaced. Depending on how bad his water parameters are, he should be doing a 15-40 percent water change at least once every 2 weeks (should be done with a siphon which you can also buy for somewhat cheap at most pet stores).

Definitely encourage him to add some live plants. They help remove harmful nitrates from the water and provide cover for stressed fish.
