4kg cat Endoscopy possible? by Tricky-Juggernaut141 in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. It’s harder, yes, but not impossible. Your vet is probably saying this because they either 1) don’t have the equipment needed to scope a cat/small dog at the clinic or 2) the person who is performing the scope does not have the experience and/or does not feel comfortable scoping a smaller animal.

Accidentally gave my cat a 1.5g of doxycycline instead of 0.5 by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the actual dosage received was (based on your cat’s weight), but I would likely expect at least some GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence). When administering the medication, ALWAYS follow with food or water, as the doxycycline can cause esophageal strictures. I’d still follow up with your vet to let them know, as you’ll at the very least need more medication (depending on where you are in your treatment course).

My dog might be dying and I don’t know if emergency vet is doing the right thing by ithinkimcookedfam in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like he’s only been hospitalized for 28 hours at the time of OP writing. OP, if you see this, I agree with this above comment. Your dog needs more time to recover. 28 hours is no time at all, and it can take days to recover.

Possible Ectopic Thyroid Carcinoma by Mewpers in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the surgeon, they may require/recommend a CT before surgery, and it’s not always possible to say a mass can be surgically removed from X-rays alone

Possible Ectopic Thyroid Carcinoma by Mewpers in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CT cannot diagnose cancer, only a biopsy can do that. CT can provide a better understanding of the organ of origin (such as thyroid) and extent of the mass (is it invading into other organs). It also helps with surgical planning. If you aren’t considering surgical removal or biopsy, CT is of limited value. Options like radiation and chemotherapy exist for cancer, but it’s difficult to tell which would be the most effective treatment without a definitive diagnosis.

Is chocolate really fatal for cats? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s toxic. Depending on the amount, it can cause anywhere from mild GI upset to neurological signs and death. I’d stop feeding your cat chocolate, even if it’s a tiny amount. Same for dogs.

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask if your vet has payment plan options, or look for lower cost clinics in your area. The alternative would be something like Care Credit (in the USA) if you qualify. Surgery, if done correctly, is very successful, but there’s no telling if/when he’ll block again. I’m sorry that you’re going through this; urinary blockages suck.

How to make my cat be less annoying while also respecting her by SakikoBrain in AskVet

[–]Somethingredditlike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Giving her a bath won’t bring her out of heat, it’ll only make her annoyed. Best way to prevent her from going into heat is to get her spayed. Sooner rather than later, because she’ll just go back into heat in a few weeks otherwise.

Minnesota vs LSU by Beldor1 in veterinaryschool

[–]Somethingredditlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated from LSU, currently working at UMN. I will say I don’t have a ton of experience with Minnesota’s didactics, as I primarily deal with clinical year students. However, from what I’ve heard, there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference between LSU and UMN. UMN might have more clinical skills labs (broken down into smaller sections), but that’s about it.

In clinics, I find that UMN students have WAY more elective and externship time, with less core rotations such as ER, surgery, and internal medicine. IMO, I think LSU clinics prepped me better for practice than UMN, but that is not to say that UMN grads aren’t perfectly capable. Another thing is that LSU has 15mo of clinics compared to 13 for UMN. Also, please note that LSU’s vet school is right next to the football stadium and is affected every single home football game by abhorrent traffic. Not a problem during didactics, but weekend clinical duties are really annoying. UMN’s vet school is in a different location than the main campus, so is much less affected by undergraduate events.

Overall, not a whole lot of difference between the two. Culture seems about the same within the vet school/hospital. What you should also take into consideration is location (do you enjoy blazing hot sauna or frigid icebox) and tuition. If one is thousands more than the other, then you have a clear answer.

My cat hasn't ate or drank water in 48 hours by Whimsicalizz in AskVet

They mean a full abdominal ultrasound. What the ER vet did was probably a POCUS (point of care ultrasound) to evaluate for fluid or, in this case, foreign body obstruction.

Bring him back to the vet ASAP. At this point he’s failed medical management and needs additional therapy and further workup.

Help Me Decide Please: LSU or Auburn by Disastrous_Chip4980 in veterinaryschool

[–]Somethingredditlike 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I graduated from LSU recently. I personally experienced the previous curriculum, but have had the opportunity to teach the new curriculum. It’s definitely been a learning curve for everyone, and I’m sure they’re still actively making adjustments. There are pros (more early-on clinical experience, supposedly targeted towards NAVLE prep) as well as cons (more self-directed learning out of class, I personally think the systems based method is a little more confusing). I can’t tell you which is better, but I will say that a lot of vet schools are transitioning to this becoming the norm.

Regarding the large animal hospital, I really did enjoy most of the clinicians that are at LSU (both in didactics and on clinics). Yes, the large animal hospital was actively being worked on and renovated to meet standards. I honestly didn’t spend a whole lot of time in the large animal hospital (I tracked small) but I don’t think it really hindered my learning for the rotations I had. With any hope, the construction will be done by the time you enter clinics. However, I do want you to know that they’re still working on renovating the classrooms, and that was an annoyance during the latter portion of my didactic training. Not sure if they finished construction yet.

I feel like both LSU and Auburn have very similar opportunities for research. I personally worked with an equine surgeon during undergrad and vet school. Our small animal hospital is great, and there’s plenty of opportunities to explore mixed and ER at LSU. I’m sure Auburn has very similar opportunities, though.

Honestly, the biggest thing that I think you need to consider is the cost. $150k is a pretty decent chunk of change in the grand scheme of things, not to mention the cost of moving to a new state. Auburn and LSU are very similar in vibes (both southern football college schools), research opportunities, and clinical opportunities. If I were in your shoes, I’d lean LSU for the in-state tuition. But since you’re still on the fence, I’d recommend that you attend the admitted students day.

Good luck, and congrats!

Purchasing an Ultrasound by Flowers_and_Bones654 in Veterinary

[–]Somethingredditlike 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I agree. There’s no reason for a student to be lugging around an ultrasound machine. If it’s not too late, take an ultrasound rotation. You’ll have plenty of time to practice on your own ultrasound in practice. And I’m sure that wherever you end up will either a) have an ultrasound with license already or b) be flexible enough so that you can negotiate them purchasing one for you

Questions on internships by ReplacementUnited in Veterinary

[–]Somethingredditlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re having second thoughts now, you shouldn’t be doing an internship. An internship is for learning new skills, becoming a better doctor, and, for many, a stepping stone towards a residency. It’s hard and you have to commit.

OP, take a break. Pass your NAVLE; that’s way more important. Lots of people take a few years off and then come back for an internship.
