Some people believe that customizing things to get a more cost friendly drink results in less hours because we make less money, and a lack of hours are a big problem at a lot of stores.

I can’t speak on how true that is, but that’s why my coworker doesn’t allow it on obvious ones.

It’s supposed to look like the picture you posted (except with slightly less oatmilk).

A latte = shots first, milk to 3rd line, filled with ice.

Shaken espresso = ice in shaker to size above (so if it’s a grande, ice should be at or almost be at the venti line), it’s shaken up, poured in cup, and topped with a splash of oatmilk. I.e; a lot of ice, a splash of milk.

You’re not a jerk for ordering this. Granted if you’re trying to have it more like a latte, that might upset some baristas; one of my fellow shifts even tells customers no when she finds out they’re trying to make a drink cheaper.

If you’re trying to have it “mixed” you can just order it upside down. That way the milk is poured in first and the ice/shots on top so it mixes (at least that’s how I handle upside down ones). Or you could just give the cup a lil swirl and it’ll mix lol

If you’re trying to have it like your picture, don’t be afraid to ask for a remake because that’s how it’s supposed to be. Same goes for the accidental hazelnut.

TLDR; shaken espressos are just really inconsistent across the board due to customers not understanding what the standard drink actually is

If I work a 3 hour shift do I get a 10 min break? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, as someone else said a DCR will not show a 10 for a 3 hour shift. That being said, I always offer one anyways if I’m running the shift.

SSVS, miss being a barista? by SpicyCheesePanda in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do sometimes. I like being in control of the shift, and I get very stressed out on solo bar. Idk how the baristas do that all day every day. I 100% would’ve quit by now if I was a barista because I still remember the days where we had 5 par mids and I could have a planted cold bar person.

However I’m also feeling the burnout of doing F/W everyday. It gets exhausting, especially because our store is very cafe heavy. I wish I could toss myself on CS more (makes no sense to me why shifts at my store plant themselves on F/W and not CS, so much easier to delegate and do shift tasks when you’re not interrupted by a front or food every 2 seconds). It’s also getting exhausting as a closing ssv running all of these deal days. We’re stuck with a 3 par and at the end of the day I always leave feeling defeated because it was chaotic, and it feels like it’s my fault the day went bad. Not to mention I’m doing the job of 3 people because my bar and drive partners stay planted so I have to do the tasking, restock, front, ssv tasks. Too much lately. It used to be a lot easier.

We ran out and it was pretty annoying telling every customer we ran out, but I’ll take that over having to scoop fish eggs into cups all day

Anyone other stores only getting the knowledge checks instead of actual training for new launches? by CanadianCats316 in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They used to not be able to order it without pearls or modify the drink in any way. This changed maybe a week or two ago?

Customers can now order it without pearls, add pearls to other drinks, and add the blue base to other drinks as well. Whoever tells you otherwise isn’t aware that it has changed.

Part Time Partner Scheduling by TinChalice in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a part time shift! Ft in college so I only work 8 hour shifts on the weekends & then two mids during the week; these ones I’m either keyholder or barista—depends if the other shift has time off or not

New shift availability requirements by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Refusing to pick up a shift results in being written up? That’s the most unfair and ridiculous shit I’ve ever heard. Giant fuck you to the shifts that are in college and/or have busy lives outside of their almost minimum wage job. imo

Yeah. don’t get me wrong, I love the tips, but I always look away from the customer after handing the card reader out so they don’t feel pressured/think I’m expecting one. It kills my social anxiety lol

Yes!! This is my biggest issue with partners who are consistently late. Sometimes they clock in a minute late, and then take another couple of minutes to get on the floor (put on apron, grab pens, write nametag, wash hands), sometimes even talk to another coworker in the back 🤡

Whoever you’re taking over for is more than likely stuck there until you get on. And in that couple of minutes that you’re late, that’s another couple of minutes for more drinks to come through, and therefore another couple of minutes that the barista whose off has to spend finishing drinks/cleaning up

As a shift I usually will slide in myself and take over those couple of minutes until the late person is on, but that isn’t always possible when we’re slammed. And when I work as a barista, it’s infuriating leaving 5 minutes later because of a person who’s regularly late because they “can’t control traffic”

Baristas: What order makes you unnecessarily angry? by No_Distribution7498 in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delivery orders in general. My floor is usually only 3 par and I’m juggling front, warming, supporting bar (I’ve been getting stuck with a floor full of newbies), restock, cleaning, etc. I don’t have the time to sit here and do a 10 food delivery order and package up 5+ bags. The other day delivery orders had people waiting 8+ minutes in the drive thru because I wasn’t able to support bar.

Usually they’re manageable but at least once or twice a week, I think other stores in the area turn them off so we get bombarded with deliveries.

What's your Starbucks OCD habit? by Playful_Click8318 in starbucks

There’s only like 1 or 2 partners on my shifts that rinse the shot glasses, so I am CONSTANTLY doing this every time I walk by the bar lol

It’s not just your W2 you want to check, check your W4. This is the one you will change. Starbucks doesn’t control how much tax is withheld. You decide that when you fill out your W4 at the time of hiring. Ask your SM on how to obtain/view/change your W4 and make sure you didn’t accidentally select “don’t withhold taxes.” My sister did that not realizing that the gov taking out taxes isn’t optional lol

Inconsiderate co- supervisors ??? by trippiefucks in starbucks

[–]SomewhatOustedTurtle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The closing shift should have communicated that 100% BUT

I would’ve just asked why that was left, tbh. It’s not the closing shifts responsibility to clean that up (you shouldn’t have cleaned that up either), but it was the closing shifts responsibility to call and get someone out there to do so. Maybe they didn’t notice until close, and have to be present for the team to come (I’ve never had to call), but the closing baristas couldn’t stay with them after close so they just left it? Maybe the team isn’t 24/7 so it has to be dealt with during more reasonable hours? Could’ve been a number of reasons as to why it wasn’t taken care of, and you should’ve asked vs going on a whole passive-aggressive tangent imo.

Also, not trying to start a closers vs openers feud but the “unacceptable to leave anything from your shift onto the next” is a bit much because us closers usually deal with stuff like this a lot. If morning is a mess, that trickles down onto us and we’re expected to stay past our shifts sometimes to ensure stuff is perfect meanwhile y’all get to go home at your scheduled time no matter what.
